The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to listen to and rank the 20 songs competing in Eesti Laul 2018. Next is Nika with her song “Knock Knock”. Were we done, done, done, done with it? Read on to find out!

Nika – “Knock Knock”

“Knock Knock” reviews

Rick: After listening to this it feels like you‘ve listened to five different songs! Although every song-part on its own sounds great, the combination of them is just too much! Nika overdid it by having too many ideas for only one song. So although it‘s interesting and fresh, this confuses me.

Score: 5.5/10

Robyn: It’s an odd year when this is one of the strongest entries in Eesti Laul. “Knock Knock” has edge and artpop weirdness, but it’s the same style Sia has taken to the top of the charts. The driving piano song grounds the song as the electronic sounds and Nka’s voice swirls around. There’s potential for a captivating live performance, making Nika one to watch.

Score: 8/10

Barnabas: A very interesting package of dark pop, which keeps changing as the track goes on! The dubstep theme is followed by a piano-driven one, then they’re both mixed. It’s just so well-composed that it could be a dark horse!

Score: 8/10

Deban: Clever use of vocoder paired with fresh modern beats. Nika may be a newcomer to Eesti Laul, but her self-written debut packs a punch, and she mixes it up with attitude at the same time. Her swagger is real, and I’m loving her gusto.

Score: 7.5/10

Jovana: Even if you don’t like “Knock Knock”, you have to appreciate Nika for trying to be different. This definitely is different, in fact, it sounds like it has several different songs within itself! And for me it works, I feel like all those pieces made in different styles come together in a perfect puzzle. However, unfortunately, it can happen that the viewers will find it somewhat confusing and that it would suffer the fate of “Icebreaker”.

Score: 7.5/10

Lukas: This song starts promising but when it hits the chorus, it just goes downhill. The rap part doesn‘t work here at all and the entire song just has too many different styles. The best part is the pre-chorus but everything else just needs to be changed. Nika‘s voice is nice and quite different so that brings this song a bit up.

Score: 6/10

It’s one of my favourite songs of this Eurovision season. 9/10
If it wins, I’m going to vote for it.

The structure is weird and there are so many different parts. I love the verses (or what could be called verses) but I hate the hook. I think it is either my second favourite song in Eesti Laul or one of the worst. I really don’t know just yet!

Now THIS is true art. Not one musical idea, not two, not three, but FOUR musical ideas! There’s just one slight problem, like Norway’s “Icebreaker” (2016) its message is messy. Even so, this is a memorable radio hit that could be a dark horse. 8/10

I do agree, best song of its (quite frankly) bad semi. She is beautiful girl, this sounds modern, however, it is a bit mess.

7/10 – and very good luck for girl in her career.

It has too much ‘Mixing up at the same time’ . Parts of the song I love but some I don’t. Overall it becomes too chaotic to really give multiple listens to. But being in the second semi this should easily come through!

A 6.5/10.

Probably the best song in semi final 2. It’s very dynamic and Nika has a voice to pull it off.

7.5/10
