Mamma mia! The first live show of Sanremo 2018 destroyed all the records of the last 13 years with 11,603,000 viewers and an audience share of 52.1%.

With its infectious enthusiasm, the super-duper Italian festival continued on with its Wednesday night show.

Half of the 20 Campioni contestants — the big names from which Italy’s Eurovision 2018 artist will be chosen — performed their entries to the viewers for the second time.

The live show started with the performances of half of the Nuove Proposte, the category dedicated to newcomers, judged by televote (40%), the press centre (30%) and a demoscopic poll (30%).

Unlike last year, there were no eliminations as everyone is going to the final. These were the four artists and their songs:

During the evening we were treated to guest performances from Sanremo winner and Eurovision 2015 third place Il Volo. Our guys rocked the stage with “Nessun dorma”, the historic aria from the final act of “Turandot”. They also paid homage to Eurovision 1968 entrant Sergio Endrigo performing “Canzone per te“.

They weren’t the only guests at the Ariston Theatre. Italian popstar Biagio Antonacci presented his single “Fortuna che ci sei“, while English legend Sting sung “Muoio per te” and “Don’t make me wait” with Jamaican rapper Shaggy. At the end of the night, Sanremo 2011 winner Roberto Vecchioni performed his hit “Samarcanda”.

Then after four hours of music moments, random on-stage appearances and comedy sketches, the results of the Campioni category were revealed in random order.

SANREMO’S SECOND NIGHT

TOP

MIDDLE

BOTTOM

Just as yesterday, we remind you: this is not the definitive ranking of the second night. To keep us in suspense until Saturday, the organizers decided to show us just the results of ONE “voting jury” — and a different one each night. For the second night it was the turn of the press jury.

Tomorrow night will feature the other ten artists who will sing their entries for the second time, including red-head lioness Noemi, indie-pop band Lo Stato Sociale — together with the swirling salsa dancer Paddy Jones — and funk rock trio The Kolors.

HOW WILL THE SANREMO WINNER BE PICKED?

Voting during the five evenings occurs through different combinations of four methods:

  • Public televoting, carried out via landline, mobile phone, the contest’s official mobile app, and online voting.
  • Press jury voting, by accredited journalists that followed the competition from the Roof Hall at the Ariston Teathre.
  • demoscopic poll, composed of a sample of 300 music fans, which voted from their homes via an electronic voting system managed by Ipsos.
  • Expert jury voting, resulting from points assigned by eight personalities from the world of music, entertainment and culture.

The three voting systems will have a percentage weight so distributed:

  • First, Second and Third Evening: 40% Public televoting; 30% Demoscopic poll; 30% Press jury voting
  • Fourth and Fifth Evening: 50% Public televoting; 30% Press jury voting; 20% Expert jury voting

In the final part of the fifth evening, a new rank indicating the first three acts — determined by the percentage of votes obtained in this evening’s vote and those obtained in previous evenings — will be drawn up.
