Tamar Kaprelian was a queen on an otherworldly throne and Gata Band had everyone on their feet. So it was not a surprise both were fan favourites on social media during tonight’s first semi-final of Depi Evratesil. What was a surprise? That neither of them advanced.

Instead, the five qualifiers, who were announced in random order, were: Mger Armenia, Robert Koloyan, Gevorg Harutyunyan, Lusine Mardanyan and Nemra.

The qualifiers

Gevorg Harutyunyan opened the show with “Stand Up” and had the most dramatic performance of the night. Much akin to his Depi Evratesil performances from last year, Gevorg showed his acting talents to deliver a captivating performance.

Tamar Kaprelian may not have made it through but her Nvak Foundation student Lusine Mardanyan did. With a performance set entirely in black and white, Lusine painted a beautiful picture. She stood out among a sea of underwhelming upbeat songs in the first half of the draw.

Much has been written about Mger Armenia but the self-proclaimed winner of Depi Evratesil lives on. The Wiwi Jury may not have been a fan of his song but his vocals were certainly on point, unlike many of the acts that came before him.

Nemra delivered arguably the most interesting staging of the night. The backdrop read “No show — enjoy the music” on a black screen and it seems the music won the crowd over. “I’m a Liar” may be a bit repetitive at times but the interesting vocals made this one pop out.

Robert Koloyan was sandwiched between the big favourite and the biggest grower of the night. Despite that, he went through while they failed. “Get Away With Us” was performed with high energy and dramatic staging, earning Robert a place in the final.

The show also included a performance by Armenia’s Junior Eurovision 2017 representative Misha. He performed his song “Boomerang” as the interval act for tonight’s show.

Depi Evratesil 2018 Semi-final 1 running order

  1. Gevorg Harutyunyan
  2. Angel
  3. Lusine Mardanyan
  4. Zhanna Davtyan
  5. Mger Armenia
  6. Nemra
  7. Hayk Kasparov
  8. Tamar Kaprelian
  9. Robert Koloyan
  10. Gata Band

Semi-final 2

The second semi-final will take place on Thursday 22 February, with ten more acts competing for spots in the grand final. Among them is Depi Evratesil returnee Asmik Shiroyan who will perform “You and I”, as well as drag queen Kamil who will perform “Puerto Rico”.

@Alex – Does that mean Mger will not represent Armenia? If you say yes, then I’m with you 🙂 Either Asmik (mostly Asmik) or Sevak plzzzzzzz

You was so right! What do you think , will Sevak win the grand finale? His song called “Kami” (translation: wind). As you said “poison” was really “toxic” so it’s failed.

Let’s just start off by saying that Tamar for personal reasons was not as present emotionally and physically during Geneology year. I have to also mention that the Armenian public didn’t grow to love her the same way as they did the rest of Geneology members. She didn’t own her Armenian identity as much as it needed to get the public support. As far as the performance, I hated it, the song is great but the life performance was horrible. She should had worn a modern costume with pieces of traditional jewelry, would had made a better impact. Less is… Read more »

That’s not true at all. Tamar is perhaps the most outstanding member of Geneology with “The Otherside” project, Nvak and with a pre-contest career in the US. She is connected to Armenia way more than others as well, with all the Nvak thing and several visits through the year. Along with Vahe and Essai, she is one of a few members of the group who speaks Armenian at a level, too.

Ron

@ZK – completely disagree with your statement. The Australian girl and the Japanese girl are nowhere to be found in Armenia. Tamar was oustanding. I’m shocked at the fact that she didn’t go through.

ZK

It’s my humble perspective, I don’t know her personally, having nothing against Tamar, she is a wonderful human being. As a matter of fact, I was very sure that she was going to be the Armenian representative this year, but she didn’t leave up to the standards. We also shouldn’t forget that the girls from Japan and Australia are half Armenians, so in ways it was expected that they fully didn’t speak Armenian, but it’s not even about speaking the language. I respect her very much, but I think she didn’t own or live up to her Armenian identity. I… Read more »

I’m happy Nemra and Lusine made it through. The production values for this semi-final were pretty poor, though. Depi Evratesil needs a new team/leadership with fresh ideas. Anyway, after having seen the following video I hope Sevak wins. This is how you captivate an audience, no fireworks necessary. Starts @2:33

Disappointed. No way was she not in the top five, even without a great vocal performance. Having said that, it was not particularly staged well. The dancers did not add much and she could have done with some backing vocalists.
This was too good a song not to get through.

Just listened to the 5 songs that qualified. Talk about dull and boring. Yes, they were probably good live, but I can’t be bothered to listen to songs again live. There was only one really good song out of those 10.

Will somebody catch me up with the controversy surrounding Emmy in ESC 2011?

Marcelo
Guest
Marcelo

Apparently Emmy was favored by Armenia’s first lady to win the Armenian selection for Düsseldorf since she was her favorite. People are recalling 2011 because of this happening again with Mger Armenia being favored to win against Tamar Kaprelian, Asmik or Sevak. It’s a conspiracy theory but theyre my guilty pleasure.
Shout out to Armenian Steve for the info.

Ron
Guest
Ron

@Marcelo – actually not a conspiracy theory at all. ArmTV was pressured to internally select Emmy after her mom (who is a famous 80’s singer in Armenia) plead to the Armenian first lady. It was then reported that Armenia’s first lady wanted to be briefed on everything including the song selection and that she herself had wanted Emmy to sing Boom-Boom.

Nemra
Guest
Nemra

LOL. Those are some creepy urban legends. Emmy was selected internally after she had lost to Eva Rivas in 2010 with a great scandal. First lady may have her opinion or favorites, but neither she nor her husband (the president) have so much power to decide who should go this year. an by the way they have a few thousand more important things to do.

Ron
Guest
Ron

@Nemra – apparently they don’t because the First Lady is known to take part in “musical projects” like New Wave and Eurovision. As for power, are you kidding me? First Channel is a puppet of the government/president.

@Adam – the dancers were probably the only decent thing about that trashy performance. She sounded AWFUL (not a secret – she cannot sing), her dress was tacky with the whole boxing theme and her back up vocalist was out of tune oh and don’t get me started on the background graphics.

Steve
Guest
Steve

Haha, thanks Marcelo. Yeah, Emmy lost once to Eva Rivas in national selection and the national TV was forced to select her internally next year. Her song was awful, but still managed to be the seventh among televoters. However, the jury eliminated and removed her from Semis. The jury did that to Turkey, too. Stockselius got rid of those so they didn’t share any points with Azerbaijan who was promised to win that year (obviously the Turjish diaspora and ex-USSR countries couldn’t give points to them and possibly would vote for Azerbaijan). And people tell that Armenia is homophobic? Just look how all men (some of them acting very feminine) went through and the only charming lady was left in semis??? Steve
Guest

Emmy was the first lady’s another choice. I agree that it was terrible entry. However, it managed to be the seventh among the televoters in her semi. She was eliminated on purpose tho and so did Turkey, so that Stockselius gave the victory to Azerbaijan. Emmy wouldn’t be on top 10, but could take many votes from Azerbaijan. No surprise, Stickselius has to resign because of that corruption story.

Marcelo
Guest
Marcelo

While I agree about the corruption scandal regarding Azerbaijan and how it’s possible that they might have bought their victory. I still don’t believe that Emmy’s song deserved to go through in Düsseldorf. It was an annoying song, so hideous and awful that I couldnt stand. If you’re gonna do boom boom shakalaka, do it properly. Yet I still agree that Turkey could have been damaged so that the Turkic diaspora could only vote for Azerbaijan. But, still, why would Azerbaijan damage Turkey, being them so close?

Steve
Guest
Steve

In their mentality, helping their small brother was worth the sacrifice. Also, Turkey made an exception to partake in the contest when that was happening in Azerbaijan, although it had announced they would never partake after non-qualification. Also, they might have not even been aware of the conspiracy happening behind the close doors. Emmy was really bad, but could easily be 15th or 19th that year. There were several worse songs in the final. Even the winner was a disgrace.

If Armenia picks Forever as their song, there they go straight to the bottom of my list. Moldova would be even lower if they pick Come To Life, but what are the chances of that? Also, Romania with We Are One! They aren’t picking that one, aren’t they? So, realistically speaking, Armenia could end-up being my last. Which, considering their strong line-up, would be such a shame.

Monsters is actually the only song apart from ‘You & I’ that I really enjoy listening to out of all of the NF selection this year. Everything seems so levelled, flat, boring this year that we need a good bop. Otherwise we’ll end up with a parade of funeral songs, which will make me fall asleep within a few minutes. I don’t really think the live vocals were that bad! The staging was a little underwhelming but I think the volume of the backing track wrt her microphone was the issue rather than bad live vocals…..I’ve seen in videos that she for sure can sing.

The only criticism I’d have of the vocals is that they sounded too thin – not the beefier sound of the studio version.

I think the staging killed it. Someone like Egine could have totally worked that desert princess aesthetic, but Tamar seemed too sweet to pull it off.

Tamar’s vocals were quite soft, or rather too soft live. And the staging didn’t wow me or anything. I was expecting something more intense to elevate the song. Sadly, that didn’t translate onscreen.

Also, I won’t be surprised if Asmik doesn’t go through. Looks like they have an other winner in mind.

They’re delusional if they think the diaspora will continue to vote for any sh*t song they send, because we don’t and we’ve shown it in the past.

The corruption is strong with this one, poor Tamar never stood a chance

Kamil for the win! :p But as it looks like they have already chosen the winner inside the broadcaster, then why to make a national selection I don’t understand?! It’s just a waste of money. Anyway…

I can’t tell if you actually like that mess, or if you’re pretending to stan for it so that Armenia chooses it and makes a fool of itself.

I just don’t like any other songs they have on the offer. Qami would be a nice choice, but I don’t want another ballad to be chosen. We have Spain, Montenegro and will probably get more very soon from Germany, Portugal, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Azerbaijan etc. Anyway they will choose Mger after all, so it all means nothing.

Armenia awaits another non-qualification….well done. When Armenian residents need help from diaspora, they are on their knees and when it’s the other way around, they rather vote for their unworthy neigbour. My favourite is now out and I have no longer any interest in this contest. Armenia, move off to a corner and let the other countries enjoy their parties. We have no room in it now.

I think tamar is happy for mger made it through cuz she tweeted that she likes mger and she would give him a hug

She was politically correct. Mger is just a pack of sh|t. When the spokeperson asked that what he thinks as the only entry with the Respected Artist title, he said that the others should work harder to catch up on him. Why was there any need to stress his titles???? I guess the First Lady of the corrupted president plays her dirty role to push him through.

Let’s be honest – the whole show was kind of a mess. Tamar was literally the only good act with a clear storyline and a show and they kicked her out. Oh well, I guess it will be 2011 all over again for Armenia.

Tamar’s performance wasn’t good, but she deserved to qualify anyway, since this semi was very weak. The only qualified song I feel mildly enjoyable is Nemra’s.

This show is obviously corrupt in favour of that Mger guy as some armenians said before. Belarus, Armenia… Who’s next?? Hello, Moldova?

Asmik is my winner but leaving Tamar in the semi while that awful Mger thing qualified? Not good, Armenia.

Random question, why does everyone dislike the MGR guy?

Other than the fact that he is supported by the first lady of armenia, says someone born in armenia should represent the country at Eurovision, and claims he is gonna win it all at eurovision, are there any other reasons?
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care for him insulting other artists and being full of himself, I just figured there might be other reason(s) I’m not aware of.

You kind of summed it up pretty nicely – stories of curruption, big ego, pretentious song. Should there be more?

Ron

He actually even made an obnoxious statement during the show when the hostess asked him what would happen if he didn’t get to represent Armenia, he said he would wish whoever will represent a good luck and an opporutnity to someday become a “national singer of Armenia” – a pretentious title that was given to him by the president.

Also, I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but both Tamar and Hayk Kasparov were sitting right next to him and they both have a beef with Mger. He’s just a big diva.

Sorry but all the Tamar fan-boys need to calm down… Tamar’s song was fine but it won’t be missed at Eurovision, plus the live performance was awful. I actually quite like Robert Koloyan. I think he would do quite well at Eurovision.

Hating on the other acts just because your favourite didn’t win isn’t fair. You may not like the song but just accept the result. It won’t change just because you are complaining about it. Tamar isn’t going to Eurovision, accept it.

Our best bet right now is to shut the hell up and deal with the fact that Tamar’s stuck in her semi-final. 🙁 Hopefully Asmik passes the second semi-final this Thursday. 🙂

Yes, Tamar’s vocals weren’t good but I think she was very nervous, you could hear that. Her song was still the best in the competition and with another shot, I think she would have been good in the final. I really wanted to hear poison in Eurovision, especially now that we have been choosing a lot of slow, sleepy songs.

Pure corruption and injustice. It was clear from the audience who so supported Mger while everyone hates him here. Those who know me know that I’m against foreign songs but I hope someone from Sevak, Asmik and even Kamil will stop that First Lady’s puppy. I didn’t like Tamara’s performance either but what happened with her (she deserved to qualify ) done to legitimate Mger’s result in the final also it was revange against her team as Derhova in 2011 dared to say that Boom Booms victory was unfair and Sebu Simonian had scandals in Armenia. I do believe they… Read more »

Tamar Kaprelian, just a diva for the bubble, not in the real world. She can go back to London now, the place she said she calls HOME. Armenians care about such things, you can’t pretend you are one of them and you like folk music, if you don’t live in the country.
