Ryk brought a dancer on top of a piano, Ivy set the stage on fire, Natia strutted the catwalk, voXXclub brought Baverian joy and Xavier sang in front of a series of moving mirrors.
But in the end it was Michael Schulte who soared above the competition to win Germany’s Unser Lied für Lissabon with “You Let Me Walk Alone”. Michael touched audiences with his song, which is a tribute to his dad who passed away 13 years ago. His performance saw him stand in front of a screen that displayed images of people with their dads, as well as some of the lyrics from the song.
Michael Schulte “You Let Me Walk Alone”
The winner was decided by the televoting German public, an international jury which included Ruth Lorenzo and Margaret Berger, plus the ‘Europe panel’ consisting of German Eurovision fans from across Europe.
Michael gained top marks from all three, becoming the clear winner with an eleven point lead over Xavier Darcy in second place.

Do you agree with the results? Are you happy that Michael will be heading to Lisbon? Do you think they can lift Germany from the bottom of the leader board? Let us know in the comments below!
RYK’s one was better.
Is he trying to copy Ed. Sheeran?
I think Voxxclub had a better chance getting noticed in the competition. This is pretty average, nice but average.
Ryk should had won… 🙁
His song could do so much better in Lisbon…
Can’t believe that it came last in the televoting…
One more unfortunate entry from Germany….
Typical…
Fully agree, RYK would have had a good chance of taking the price. This song is just a dime a dozen. Seems that people are getting so used to listening to crap on the radio that they can no longer recognize true talent. What a shame.
Natia was so good, how could she come last :O
One more copied , boring , depressing ballad we’ve heard a billion times…bottom 3
You must be eating your words by now!
Botto five material
It’s a nice song but don’t think it will leave an impact. It’s not going to end up last but not top 10 either.
I prefer both Ed Sheeran and James Arthur over this.
Well, Michael, Ryk and Xavier were all good on the stage last night but I guess people were touched by Michael’s song and story. Even if it’s a bit cheesy, I got the feels too at first listen. But then it started to feel uncomfortable about his story being mentioned every second and I got annoyed like I did about O’g3ne last year. I don’t think they are not sincere about their stories, I truly believe they are but it feels too intimate to share. I don’t know. I lost connection. But it’s a good and respectable song. I hope… Read more »
I’m still sorry it’s not voXXclub. It was second in televote, so I guess German citizens are not too much to blame, but still I can’t believe how many Germans think that if they would’ve sent voXXclub, the whole world would think they are all farmers with short trousers. Or they complain that voXXclub represents only Bavaria…so what? It’s the same in every country. Folk music is different in different regions, even in small countries. So silly problems.
Well, good luck Michael Schulte!
I expected that he would be the winner.A nice song that could be a radio hit, obvious influences from Ed Sheeran and Adele but you hardly remember that later and his live vocals are weak and must be improved otherwise he will be lost to the comparison with the studio version. It’s Germany and either it will be to the top places or to the bottom, but it doesn’t deserve nul points for sure.
After this I believe Sweden should send an up-tempo popsong with some effective staging to get away from the Sobral-swamp. It would be a smart move. I still believe in Mariette if she can pull her act together. Then we would make a decent result. Or perhaps Benjamin.
So far, after 3 semis, Benjamin is so far ahead it’s not even funny. Let’s hope tomorrow will be better than two Saturdays before in Melodifestivalen.
After the good singers over the last couple of years germany finally has a good singer and a good song. Congratulation!!! Don’t see the last the place for you
An amazing song, that just touch the heart in the right place.
Really??? Are we again at this point??? Plagiarism…
That is no plagiarism… Yeah maybe there are similarities to other songs but almost every song last year had a similarity with another song. And this year there will be difference.
Germany has a good singer and this year finally a good song.
I think they can go on the left side of the scoreboard.
10 points from Spain
They’re just butthurt that their faves didn’t make it.
You can tell when they’re starting to write in all caps.
The chords sound like an Adele song and it’s your typical ballad, i dont see germany doing well. But his hair is nice at least………
Adele? Ed Sheeran? We already know Germany will be 24th again with this lack of originality
Does anyone know why Barbara Schoeneberger did not host the elimination this year? Did she think she’s bad luck or something?
she hosted a German award ahow 😉
Ah, I see! Goldene Kamera or something like this?
Hopefully she’ll be back for the preshow in May.
She will plus she’s going to be the German spokesperson in May 😉
This is pretty average, but we could shoot for better than 25th place and more than 11 points.
Yeah, average is perfect to describe it. I’m actually shocked that he scored an allkill in the votings yesterday.
Unfortunately I don’t see any improvement on the scoreboard for Germany this year either 🙁
This sounds like a song I’ve heard before.. but it’s quite nice.
I like this song, but I have a problem with the lyrics, they are waay too obvious! It’s nice that he sings to his father, but the lyrics are really too literal, like a melodramatic movie with a lot of crying… and please remove the pictures from the background, they are just … no. Otherwise, he has a great voice and aura, top 15 for me
Too hard to say three words:
Germany zero points
Greeks are very upset with the joke hosts did during the final.
what joke?
The hosts were making fun of the Greek and they’re debts to the EU as far as I remember.
*their
No they made fun of the selection process for the Greek entry this year
Oh, okay, my bad.
I’m just too used to Germans making fun of the Greek for that other thing.
The joke was, that Linda herself is Greek and she made fun of herself being Greek …
Either way is lame joke and not funny.
Yes I watched it too yesterday and this made me really angry. I want to believe that it was just bad humour but every year they do say something insulting about greece. This is unacceptable.
No sorry. The joke was about the disquaification and Linda saying that possibly it had to do something with money or the lack thereof. I found it a bit offensive and so did some people in the audience. Now, if Linda is of Greek origin, then that makes it a bit funnier, comming from her, but it is still a lame joke.
I believe is a bad joke, and if she is Greek, that only means she is a try-hard. Not funny, not classy, she just embarrass herself.
She is a newsspeaker, I don´t think her intention was to insult anybody. From my perspective (as german) I get the impression that Germans with foreign roots (especially when you can see that so clearly in her surname) often have to/want to seem as german as possible, even if it means “making fun” of your roots. Plus your goal is always to be respected and seem respectable. We Germans are funnier than people think of us and although I think it went a bit too far myself I think it was purely meant as a joke.
touching! <3 this is a masterpeice
Graham’s 7 years old plagiarism. How do people even pretend not notice this. Too much similarity.
Every single Eurovision track is accused of plagiarism these days.
Napaw, no it isnt and you know it. Stop trying to defend this.
I am not defending anything. Go on the comments of every single chosen track (and the national final) you’ll find at least a couple of “this is plagiarism of xyz !!!111!!!” comments.
How, in God’s name, did you get to that conclusion?
And I’m asking this as a Dane – just like the songwriter is.
It has NOTHING to do with 7 Years just because he sings about childhood.
Get it together.
Hi he put sentences together, how he sings and how the song sounds. It reminds me of that song too much. I forgot that song a while ago, but I instantly remembered it when I heard that. The melody is not very different either…
Not my first choice. I was hoping for Voxxclub to spice things up in Lisbon this year. Or Natia. Surprisingly, the final results were almost the inverse of my ratings. ? I had Michael in my number six spot. We’ll see where this ends up!
*Templates when your favourite song didn’t won NF*
“This song is gotta go straight to the bottom 5”
But i’m so glad they didn’t sent Voxxclub on thi bunch of good songs, good Lord
Michael song literally the hybrid of Plain White T’s 1 2 3 4 and Katy Perry’s The One That Got Away
The most obvious template nowadays is “this is plagiarism” 😛 Come on, it’s pop music. Almost everything sounds like something else.
I’m aware of this since music has always evolving through many influences. So it’s normal if most of songs sounds like the others.
THANK YOU! That was my mentality yesterday, anyone but this embarrassing circus…
I can’t believe there’s actually “justice for voxxclub” comments on social media” :/
It was alright! Not a bad choice and Germany had an excellent final. Big steps forward in the right direction.
Again, however, I feel Germany left a better song not selected. Take that stupid dancer off the piano and Ryk was a potential top ten entry. His voice!
Agree with everything.
I didn’t think much of this song when I first heard it on Spotify, but I wasn’t really paying attention to the lyrics. This is really touching, and it should do well. The betting odds are reflecting that too, with Germany up in the top 10 for now.
Hmm, my first reaction is that he’s a decent singer, but not very impactful, despite the emotion. The song’s rather middling, to be honest, but that what’s Germany seems to go for…and likely end up somewhere in the middle of the scoreboard…the other big 4 have stronger entrants. 7/10! (At least it won’t be fighting for last place with Spain as last year!)
If this gets seriously repackaged, camera angles, more intense and playing on the family theme, we’re talking TOP FIVE here…this is heads and shoulders above any recent German entries……
haha
I am trying not to give ny hopes up. This is the first time in a while that I am very patriotic in Eurovision again and I just hope that we’ll be in the Top 20, that’d already be great for us?. Michael deserves more but… it’s still Germany and everyone hates us??
Well, the UK loves a good rival at football. Plus Germany makes good cars (ignoring the enviornmental test cheating scandal). 🙂
Point is, not everyone “hates” Germany. I would hope it’s never that simple.
We don’t hate Germany, but you can’t force us to like your past three entries.
”it’s still Germany and everyone hates us??”
Oh, please, don’t start again, it seems Germans really enjoy saying this.
“It’s still Germany and everyone still hates our last three entries” fixed it for you
I agree so much. I´m German, and I hate it when Germans say ” oh we were at the bottom because the world hates us”. like dude, if you send such bad songs..
This sounds so familiar to me… In the final, it will get lost with stronger ballads and catchy uptempo songs.
What a song ladies and gents! I love it!!
GUYS. THE SONG SOUNDS LIKE A PLAGIARIAM FROM ANOTHER SONG. ADELE- SOMEONE LIKE YOU????
There’s a difference between coincidental momentary similarity and full on plagiarism. This, hopefully, is just a councidental momentary similarity between the underlying harmonies of the bridges of both songs.
No. It’s literally the full song. And plagiarism from another song too, i’ve heard this sound somewhere.
Okay, I’ll listen to it again and go through it chord by chord. Hold on.
the chorus reminds me of another song. Maybe ed sheeran or something else. But definitely not original
So, I listened again. Indeed, there are striking similarities between the songs in both the melody and the harmony in the Verses. After that though, the melody in Michael’s song takes on a form of its own. Most interestingly, the bridges of both songs have almost identical harmonic progressions with only the last few transitional chords from Adele’s song being missing from Michael’s song. However, the Choruses to the songs are totally different. If anything, Michael’s song takes the melody from the Verses and develops that into the Chorus. Conversely, Adele’s song creates a whole new melody with faster chord… Read more »
It’s the same.
No, it really isn’t. If so, you have to prove it, and all you’ve given is a handwaving argument.
Why should i have to prove it when you can just listen to it? I dont need an argument, the chords are literally the same, even the purple mask admit it.
Where’s your argument btw??
he*
Purple mask just took their time and gave you a detailed reply on why the song is not plagiarized and all you have to say is “pff, it’s the same”.
At this point I’m sure you’re just being butthurt and childish
Agree. No plagiarism. For me it reminds about James Blunt ”You’re Beautiful”, though. But still this is good.
Yes, that is another song with a similar melodic hook, involving a rising fifth and a falling third.
It didn’t remind of someone like you at all :/
It’s not the same. Perhaps in the same genre, yes, but they’re not the same. It also sounds like a song that would come from a Kris Allen or The Script catalogue. 🙂
PLEASE DONT TELL ME ANOTHER BALLAD WILL WIN THIS YEAR
Fine, we won’t. 😀
Just because your asked nicely.
Why so many songs are competing for the Bottom5 instead of Top10?
This falls in the same category.
All Big 5 songs are brilliant this year, in my opinion. Sorry if that opinion differs to some of you.
There are two with humanitarian messages, one literal love ballad, one deeply personal song about a dead father and one song about surviving bad weather. Love it! 🙂
And for the record: France, Germany and Italy are my top 3 at the moment. 🙂
I think four of them are decent. 😉
Wow, this is a good and touching entry.
Okay, now I want AWS to win in Hungary so we could have two very different songs about losing one’s father… Very interesting!
The big 5, y’all had one job… All 5 songs are tragic this year.
Really poor songs this year so far – let’s hope better to come!
His song and his voice are okay, nothing to write home about. I suppose my biggest criticism is that while I was watching, I felt it was an uncomfortably personal song. Feel free to keep your family tree and photo albums to yourself, thank you.
This will be a bottom five placer in the final. Not for a lack of quality, but for an absolute lack of anything remotely interesting.
Even though it’s not the type of song we haven’t heard in the past in one way or another from other artists, Michael’s heart-breaking, almost “flesh-and-bone”, interpretation really elevates it. Well done Germany, it’s a wonderful choice.
… like a blend of roman lob and “two” by the antlers
not bad! i like it much more than most of the songs out so far, but it’s pretty evident it’s not going to do that great in lisbon. there’s nothing really exciting about it
Wunderbar! Finally Germany has a song for which it can be proud of! Ryk would also be nice, but Michael has more chances. So please, mein liebes Deutschland, don’t mess it up!
Boring. Another typical ballad. Germany again in the race to the last place. Tho I loved Is It Right and even Black Smoke.
This is definitely our best entry since 2012! And we finally got a man again ? I absolutely LOVE this Song!!!
for Germany with this song
big big big 0 points
Now go to the American idol with her…
This was obviously the best Germany had to offer. Still nothing special though. Anyways, good luck
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I used to watch him in the voice, he’s so hot!! i cant believe im going to meet him.
