Ryk brought a dancer on top of a piano, Ivy set the stage on fire, Natia strutted the catwalk, voXXclub brought Baverian joy and Xavier sang in front of a series of moving mirrors.

But in the end it was Michael Schulte who soared above the competition to win Germany’s Unser Lied für Lissabon with “You Let Me Walk Alone”. Michael touched audiences with his song, which is a tribute to his dad who passed away 13 years ago. His performance saw him stand in front of a screen that displayed images of people with their dads, as well as some of the lyrics from the song.

Michael Schulte “You Let Me Walk Alone”

The winner was decided by the televoting German public, an international jury which included Ruth Lorenzo and Margaret Berger, plus the ‘Europe panel’ consisting of German Eurovision fans from across Europe.

Michael gained top marks from all three, becoming the clear winner with an eleven point lead over Xavier Darcy in second place.

Can’t believe that it came last in the televoting…

Fully agree, RYK would have had a good chance of taking the price. This song is just a dime a dozen. Seems that people are getting so used to listening to crap on the radio that they can no longer recognize true talent. What a shame.

It’s a nice song but don’t think it will leave an impact. It’s not going to end up last but not top 10 either.

Well, Michael, Ryk and Xavier were all good on the stage last night but I guess people were touched by Michael’s song and story. Even if it’s a bit cheesy, I got the feels too at first listen. But then it started to feel uncomfortable about his story being mentioned every second and I got annoyed like I did about O’g3ne last year. I don’t think they are not sincere about their stories, I truly believe they are but it feels too intimate to share. I don’t know. I lost connection. But it’s a good and respectable song. I’m still sorry it’s not voXXclub. It was second in televote, so I guess German citizens are not too much to blame, but still I can’t believe how many Germans think that if they would’ve sent voXXclub, the whole world would think they are all farmers with short trousers. Or they complain that voXXclub represents only Bavaria…so what? It’s the same in every country. Folk music is different in different regions, even in small countries. So silly problems.
Well, good luck Michael Schulte!

I expected that he would be the winner.A nice song that could be a radio hit, obvious influences from Ed Sheeran and Adele but you hardly remember that later and his live vocals are weak and must be improved otherwise he will be lost to the comparison with the studio version. It’s Germany and either it will be to the top places or to the bottom, but it doesn’t deserve nul points for sure.

After this I believe Sweden should send an up-tempo popsong with some effective staging to get away from the Sobral-swamp. It would be a smart move. I still believe in Mariette if she can pull her act together. Then we would make a decent result. Or perhaps Benjamin.

I like this song, but I have a problem with the lyrics, they are waay too obvious! It’s nice that he sings to his father, but the lyrics are really too literal, like a melodramatic movie with a lot of crying… and please remove the pictures from the background, they are just … no. Otherwise, he has a great voice and aura, top 15 for me

No sorry. The joke was about the disquaification and Linda saying that possibly it had to do something with money or the lack thereof. She is a newsspeaker, I don´t think her intention was to insult anybody. From my perspective (as german) I get the impression that Germans with foreign roots (especially when you can see that so clearly in her surname) often have to/want to seem as german as possible, even if it means “making fun” of your roots. Plus your goal is always to be respected and seem respectable. We Germans are funnier than people think of us and although I think it went a bit too far myself I think it was purely meant as a joke.

I didn’t think much of this song when I first heard it on Spotify, but I wasn’t really paying attention to the lyrics. This is really touching, and it should do well. The betting odds are reflecting that too, with Germany up in the top 10 for now.

Hmm, my first reaction is that he’s a decent singer, but not very impactful, despite the emotion. The song’s rather middling, to be honest, but that what’s Germany seems to go for…and likely end up somewhere in the middle of the scoreboard…the other big 4 have stronger entrants. 7/10! (At least it won’t be fighting for last place with Spain as last year!)

So, I listened again. Indeed, there are striking similarities between the songs in both the melody and the harmony in the Verses. After that though, the melody in Michael’s song takes on a form of its own. Most interestingly, the bridges of both songs have almost identical harmonic progressions with only the last few transitional chords from Adele’s song being missing from Michael’s song. However, the Choruses to the songs are totally different. If anything, Michael’s song takes the melody from the Verses and develops that into the Chorus. Conversely, Adele’s song creates a whole new melody with faster chord… Read more »

All Big 5 songs are brilliant this year, in my opinion. Sorry if that opinion differs to some of you.
