the humans romania selectia nationala 2018

After five semi-finals, plenty of Ilinca memes and some questionable performances, Romania stepped up their game for the Selectia Nationala 2018 final. 15 acts took to the stage, but there could only be one winner.

After a 100% televote, The Humans were declared the winners with “Goodbye”!

The Humans — “Goodbye”

It’s an impressive victory for The Humans, who scored the joint highest score from the jury with 58/60 in Sighisoara. The band only formed in 2017, with this being their first attempt together at Selectia Nationala. Actually, The Humans were celebrating their one-year anniversary the very day they won the ticket to Lisbon.

Lead singer Cristina Caramarcu has had some experience before though: she and two of her colleagues worked with fellow finalists Jukebox in 2016, when they entered “Come On Everybody”. Jukebox failed to make the final then, but Cristina went even further with her new group.

Second and third place went to your poll favourites, Alexia & Matei and the Wiwi Jury favourite Feli.

Selectia Nationala 2018 — Full televoting results

1 – The Humans (“Goodbye”) – 3277 votes
2 – Alexia & Matei (“Walking On Water”) – 3114 votes
3 – Feli (“Royalty/Buna de iubit”) – 2862 votes
4 – Jukebox feat. Bella Santiago (“Auzi cum bate”) – 1728 votes
5 – RAFAEL & Friends (“We Are One”) – 1446 votes
6 – Dora Gaitanovici (“Fara tine”) – 1415 votes
7 – M I H A I (“Heaven”) – 1165 votes
8 – Claudia Andas (“The One”) – 974 votes
9 – Xandra (“Try”) – 686 votes
10 – Teodora Dinu (“Fly”) – 336 votes
11 – Echoes (“Mirror”) – 325 votes
12 – TIRI (“Desert De Sentimente”) – 320 votes
13 – Erminio Sinni & Tiziana Camelin (“All The Love Away”) – 303 votes
14 – Eduard Santha (“Me Som Romales”) – 293 votes
15 – VYROS (“La La La”) – 133 votes

Viewers could vote for as many songs they wanted, but they could only vote once per song, which meant that mass voting was out of the question. This was to avoid televoting fraud, but it also prevented fans from saving their favourites.

During the show, we were treated to Romania’s 2017 star, Ilinca, perform her new single “Nu acum”. Cezar also took to the stage to perform an operatic-tinged cover of “Amar pelos dois”. Alex Calancea Band also performed during the interval.

And just one day after their success in Moldova, DoReDos took to the Selectia Nationala stage. They performed “My Lucky Day” and got a nice reception from the Bucharest crowd.

What do you think of Romania’s choice? Can The Humans give the country another top 10 finish? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments section below!

I love this entry so much.
A cute song which emotionally touches you with music that suits such incredible lyrics.
I think this will go through to the GF’s. It’s low on the bookies, but the bookies are never initially right.

I truly think none of the songs in the lineup had a shot at the trophy, but this is to me one of the weakest choices they could’ve done. Given bold, interesting choices such as Eduard, Feli or Jukebox, they decided to stick to a boring, unoriginal our-of-the-90’s tune. The vocalist’s an animal on stage – kudos on her – but other than that, I feel this is definitely not my cup of tea. Good luck tho.

I really like it, and I already think it has more potential on first listen than I EVER thought Illinca & Alex had (and we know how much that grew and TOTALLY SLAYED at Eurovision, surprising so many) — just needs to be tightened up with the lyrics maybe in one or two places, work on her pronunciation live and to have a video that really connects the message of the song with strong visuals — their official video for this song on Youtube is really nice, but just is them performing against a wind machine — nice enough, but… Read more »

Thank you Romania for putting definitively behind us the horror of last year, which shall remain nameless, and giving us this very interesting entry. A sure qualifier and in the left side of the board for sure. This year I will not have to pee when your song will be on, but rather your neighbor… The world is nor perfect…

What does dated mean? If Bob Marley, Scorpions or Queen are dated too, I would like to see the world dominated by dated music. You could be more specific with another adjective, cause it’s pretty clear that it is more on an old style than a modern song, that is a fact, you don’t have to be a little Einstein to notice that.

Whims? Dissatisfactions? Grumblings? The song is really too high quality for the boorish level of European Contest of Politized Messages. For what reasons romanian composers and singers would make an effort to send to ESC true masterpieces? To be the subject of constant mockery, shown by national juries? For what they are interested in a musical charlatanry, a media quackery that turns ESC into a a tribune of the Parliament and the European Commission? Eurovision promotes anti-Russian political messages, status of LGBT communities, the situation of people with disabilities, the issue of terrorism, the situation of war refugees … Under… Read more »

Good point. I believe that’s one reason why Eurovision is so small in our country and our best composers and performers doesn’t want to compete. Ovidiu, 2016, disqualified. Why they chose to disqualify us in 2016, and not before? “We stand on the edge, they want us to break They want us to fall, ’cause power’s at stake They parade, laughing at us as we fade With blood on their hands, enjoying the feast, The cross on the wall, the eyes of the beast They parade, laughing at us as we fade In the darkest nights feel the power in… Read more »

Not before, not after, exactly when they’ve heard the song. I am pretty sure too that if any other song would have won for Romania at that time, Romania wouldn’t have any conflict with EBU. The message of that song was too strong to be accepted.

So sad that the country that gaved the-best yodeling song on eurovision sends this…. its not bad , its not good its just “there” for me. We need more “risky” songs rather then safe betting on female power ballads witch will reach the finale for sure … but then what? Just like Denmark last year. Dissapointed by Romania and Moldova selections this year. Gogo Bulgaria? Our last hope for balkan win ..

I’ve just gotta say, this is cool. It’s a total 90s throwback. I approve of that. This has potential and I hope it sounds good in Lisbon. The vocalist definitely has her moments. A little hard to tell what she’s saying sometimes, but the audio quality doesn’t help. The song is a bit scattered, but the instrumentation and the melody are pretty good.

It’s another filler for me, but at least a nice one. Too much orchestration killed the songs that would have benefited a more minimal approach like Eduard Santha, Tiri, Vyros. Feli was struggling, it looked like she was constantly trying to catch breath while mumbling something that was not intelligible. Jukebox and Bella, still my favorites of the night – the only song that is memorable, were worst than in semifinal, they looked tired for some reason, especially Bella. I liked Rafael and friends, in all the mumbo jumbo they stood out and would they have not performed first they might had even more votes. Teodora Dinu, Mihai were bland, from… Read more »

Eduard Santha was robbed by the public, I’m not a person that considers gypsies discriminated in Romania, not at all, but last night it was pretty much discrimination. I mean, people didn’t want to be represented not necessarily by a gypsy, but by a song about gypsies in Eurovision. Somewhere I can get why, because I consider the message in the song exagerrated, but I would have really loved to see it on a higher place cause musically it is a great song and he is a great artist. He didn’t help himself neither with his attitude in the green… Read more »

Not robbed by the public but more it was something between him and the organizers. They put him to sing among the first. And he was much worse than in semifinal, maybe he lost interest or he felt it was not at the least considered for the win and given a fair chance. The public is not to blame, they are feeling your attitude – and he got so few votes that I am not sure if even his friends voted for him. Opposed is what Rafael and friends did, they sang first but gave a very good performance and… Read more »

I don’t know, Santhat performed 6th, not exactly among the first. And I guess it was a draw for the running order. Yeah, he performed worse than in the semi-final but still, I doubt that he would have get much more votes even with a great performance, I don’t think he lost that many votes for the performance. I honestly didn’t see this coming tonight. I liked The Humans’ singer’s deep tone, and the song was one of the better ones. This was unexpected, but I like it. It’s advantage can be that it might please both jury and televoters.
Feli lost and it was her own fault. She doesn’t have the energy and stage presence for such uptempo song like Royalty. She looked like a school girl trying to copy what she saw on tv. And that mess about the languages. I guess both Feli and Jukebox made a mistake playing with languages. Just tell people from the beginning what language do you want, and don’t change it.

Well, I like it. It isn’t a masterpiece, but sounds cool. Maybe it’s just me, but I really enjoy this type of pop-rock songs and she seems to be feeling it. Maybe it sounds a bit like an early 2000s pop rock song, but these kind of songs never get old!

I have a hard time explaining myself who will actually vote for Estonia (if they pick the opera). Like, for real.

France 2011 had a “charming” singer, but, it’s OPERA.
Italy 2015 had “charming” singers, but it was POPERA, which is more attractive to the people around.

So, yeah, 2011 vibes.

I have to disagree, I do think there some good songs: Germany, Albania, Spain, Hungary, France, etc. There are also 22 more to come, more than the half. So maybe it’s too soon to think it’s going to be a bad year. Boring? Well, it depends on your taste. I enjoy slow songs too, so it isn’t problem for me. But most of these slow songs sound good to me(sorry Belarus, not you).

I such remember year 2014… everybody saying about Netherlands how boring they were, even the betting odds ranked them without any chance to reach the final. Final result: 2nd place, most probably that just because the winner created a very strong image on himself, otherwise it would have most probably won. Be careful, Eurovision is a contest watched by every range of people, every genre’s lovers, not just by radio edit/youtube users that will rank low any song not being pop/house/electronic or the kind of 2010’s and over modern music.

I don’t compare it to Netherlands, but I compare the situation. And there are so many examples, that was the most obvious. Netherlands was last year, as well considered boring by many of you, still it got a decent place. Or Poland in 2016 (with so many criticizing Michal for beating Margaret, Poland still was top 3 in televoting). Or Hungary in 2015… In fact when a song is considerd boring on Wiwibloggs forums I think it’s a good thing, it usually gets a good result.

It was a masterpiece. Just that at that time I was one of maybe 10% that were saying that here, most of you considered it boring. Which is ok for me, I hope that The Humans will be considered the most boring song in history here, as long as it does well in the contest. People here are not able to be objective, if they don’t like a song it means it’s ‘crap’. I wasn’t a fan of The Humans in the national selection either, but objectively I consider it a good song.

After torturing our ears with yodel-rap, Romania brings a Roxette-wannabe song. I’m not against a “back-to-the-basics” vibe or a 80s/90s rock ballad (actually I love these stuffs), but it sounds a cover, not a performance that catches our attention. Many national finals had your entries’ quality decreased… and the Romanian was one of them: just a safe option. #GoodbyeGrandFinal4Romania

Yeah, but we all know that they’re gonna be last or pretty Close to being last in the final… I think when it Comes to vote for a winner, all the voters won’t vote for them anymore because they’re not that stupid.

I hate to sound like Marc making out like I have the full results to hand but S&V likely already beat Liamoo. Ingrosso doesn’t seem to be getting as much attention either.

Only question is the juries. Last year they ranked the favourite 8th. Say they did that again?

Juries ranked the favourite second
