eurovision 2018 interval acts salvador ana moura mariza

Traditional Portugal meets modern Portugal. That seems to be the bridge the Portugal broadcaster RTP is trying to build with the selected interval acts for the Grand Final of Eurovision 2018.

Mariza, Ana Moura, Eurovision 2018 winner Salvador Sobral, Branko and Beatbombers will take the Altice Arena stage in a showcase of Portuguese culture.

Mariza and Ana Moura

Mariza needs no introduction to the Portuguese audience. At 44, the Portuguese singer has one of the most recognised careers in Portugal. With more than 1 million albums sold worldwide, Mariza showcases one of the best cultural exports of Portugal: Fado. She will sing alongside Ana Moura, for the first time ever, in what is set to be a “landmark in Portuguese music history”.

Beatbombers

They are the World Champions in scratch and they’ll be doing the music segment for the iconic Eurovision flag parade. The Portuguese duo also made the soundtrack to the presentation video of Lisbon as the host city for Eurovision 2018 with “Verdes Anos”. Except a fine mixture of traditional Portuguese music with modern beats.

Salvador Sobral and Branko

The Eurovision jazz king needs is back! After a successful heart transplant, Salvador is set to perform his Eurovision winning song “Amar Pelos Dois” in the final as well as new material.

DJ Branko closes the line up and will create an electronic journey of music around the world, building bridges and welcoming everyone aboard the Eurovision boat.

What do you think of the invited acts for the Eurovision Grand Final? Were you expecting some names that aren’t on the list? Tell us in the comments section below!

All good choices… But they could try Madonna too, one of the most known artists in the world… And she is living in Lisbon, in case you don’t know… It would be easy for her.

And we’ll have live instruments in Salvador’s and Ana Moura’s performances, for sure.

Is Suzy a big star in Portugal? The interval act is usually someone “important”. If she isn’t, you people are just delusional for asking.

In Portugal there’s a kind of musica we call ‘pimba’, which is connected with bad taste, lack of quality and appreciated by less educated people, genereally speaking. This is Suzy’s kind of music. The composer of the song Suzy sang on Eurovision is well known, but Suzy isn’t. When she won Festival da Canção most of the Portuguese felt ashamed and there was even a petition to avoid her presence on Eurovision. Therefore I was very surprised when I noticed that her performance was quite appreciated by the most of the Eurovision fans… :0

I don’t know if I’m putting my hopes up too high, but so far, Portugal hasn’t made any bad choices (some people might say apart from the JESC-esque slogan, but I actually kinda like that one as well). It seems like they really want to show the heart and soul of Portugal to the rest of Europe. I’d definitely enjoy a slightly more serious approach compared to the sometimes enjoyable (2010, 2013, 2016) and sometimes awkward (2001, 2015, 2017) comedy routines that we’ve seen since the beginning of the century, even if only for a change.

Just wanted to say to Andy’s comment down below:

We are not trying to turn this into a serious competition. Fado is a part of our culture, so it’s gonna be there. I do think there should also be pimba, it’s very uptempo and more ‘fun’ and another part of our country, but RTP wouldnt really allow it, for prejudice reasons, unfortunately…

Reply to  M_K

Except, Eurovision is a fun competition for entertainment. Portugal’s approach of turning the contest into a serious formal event will not be welcomed by the majority of the viewers. On the other hand, I’m hopeful we’ll have a fun competition. The 4 hosts are amazing and naturally funny and I hope they prepare a nice script for them and not waste their potential.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Portugal has the audience turn up in suits and ties as per the 50s, 60s etc

We should count ourselves lucky it’s not broadcast in black & white, after all music is feelings not colours.

No I have nothing against the country Portugal. I had them in my Top 10 in 2014 and when that pretentious snob won last year the small silver lining was that Portugal would at least get to host after 40 years.

But it’s true it has been my last place song both in 2017 and 2018.

Ok I get your point about Salvador. But that doesn’t reflect how RTP is planning the show. It will be an entertaining and modern show. They hired creatives that have worked for other ESC shows. So it will not be a smoking and tie affair and yes it will be colour and hd…

I think it’s very arrogant to remove all the LED screens as well. If you don’t want to use them then don’t, but restricting other countries from using them is not on in my opinion. And no that’s not the reason I ranked them last. I don’t like Swedens need to fundamentally change the rules of the whole contest every time they host (new voting system) and they’ve still managed to make it into my Top 10. The only country I actually have a problem with in Eurovision is Russia and even then that didn’t stop me having them as… Read more »

I think you are being a bit unfair here Aaron. I guess you can only judge that after the show… From what I heard, the team that has developed the stage will employ brand new technology that replaces LED in a much better and sophisticated way. Look at Sweden’s entry. I don’t think that this was done with LEDs and yet the most imapactful staging of the NF season. I will be the first to critzise after the shows if the absesence of LEDs will affect negatively.
