He was one of the eight contestants selected by the 1 in 360 jury to compete in San Marino’s national selection for Eurovision 2018.

And today SMRTV revealed that Sebastian “Basti” Schmidt will travel to Lisbon to support Jessika Muscat and Jenifer Brening, who won the national final earlier this month.

Officials revealed the news via San Marino’s Twitter account, writing: “Fabulous Basti Schmidt of 1 in 360 fame will join Jess & Jen on stage as backing vocalist at Eurovision 2018”.

German Basti sang “In The Moonlight” in the first semi final, followed by “Stay” in the second semi-final. He reprised the latter in the final of the contest on March 3.

The Journey of “Who We Are”

The wining song “Who We Are” was originally sung by Jessika Muscat featuring a rap from San Marino’s IROL. The rapper backed out at the last minute, saying that the song wasn’t true to his style. Luckily Jenifer Brening was able to save the day and step in to replace him, and the entry would go on to win the right to represent San Marino at Eurovision.

Basti will join the team as backing vocalist. Jeny B — who served a Scary Spice like rap interlude during the national final — recently revealed on social media that we will hear more of her on the entry due to her fans demanding so.

There were a lot of questions in the Eurovision fandom about the changing rules of the contest, and about how “Who We Are” won over fan favourite “Out of the Twilight” by Sara de Blue.

San Marino sits at the bottom of the Eurovision odds table. Our Edd Keith has some helpful tips on how San Marino might improve the selection for next year.

What do you think of the addition of Basti as a backing vocalist? Do you like that they’re choosing from the 1 in 360 family? And do you like how German the act is shaping up to be? Let us know down below.

It says there are 27 comments and only 23 are visible. The censorship is getting ridiculous

That or the website just can’t count properly. 🙂
Good spot. I have no idea what is causing it.

Even he can’t save this song from non-qualification. Just choose internally next year, San Marino. Send Valentina ft. Irol! 🙂

Let’s introduce who they are in “who we are” song –
Jessika M (main vocalist): who totally failed when sang “Out of the twilight” & started crying like a Loser when judges criticized.
Jenifer B (supportive vocalist & plagiarism-expert): who mercilessly killed the emotional feel of “Until the morning light” song & made it a funny joke.
Basti (backing vocalist) : who is quite original & much better singer than the above two in terms of authentic music.

And an additional info : Sara de Blue had sung both “Out of the twilight” & “Until the morning light” with incomparably great vocal excellence. Soon she is going for a world-wide release of “Out of the twilight”. And for sure that would be a bigger hit than any song in Eurovision 2018 because the success of Music does not depend on the height of Stage !!

“plagiarism-expert” – I can’t stop laughing! 😉

I feel happy for Basti, by the way. He was my personal number two in the San Marino Fraudvision Contest of 2018.

Oh good, I like him a lot. So it’s already three very amiable singers for San Marino and the song – in my opinion – is not that bad at all. In the yt-videos it suffered from the weak production and the dilettantish staging, but if they improve the song and give it a more professional performance, this is not a bad entry. And by the end of the day, nobody of the regular audience knows about how messy the selection process turned out. I still support Jessika a lot, although I agree that she should have turned up in… Read more »

The saddest thing about this San Marino’s entry is that Jessika deserves better. She should’ve been representing Malta with “Hypnotica” back then. Her every entry in Malta is better than this mess.

I hope they will not hide him, I hate when backing vocalists are disrespected and forced to be hidden.
And all this talk about Sara…her weak song would not have a chance, you like her because she is a diva. The same with Feli from my country Romania, she can’t sing and move (nevermind dance) in the same time, she was not even in top 3 in NF, but because she is a diva with a tiara…then she is great (NOT)

If “Out of The Twilight” is a weak song, then “Who We Are” is an absolute garbage that should be burned to ash.

The second semifinal in this year’s Eurovision is the weakest semifinal I’ve ever witnessed since I started following Eurovision since 2015. Sara would easily qualify.

Basti was my favourite singer from the selection, but the song he sang was weak – it didn’t help that there were 3 of them singing the same song.

I really don’t understand all the hate for this song, I genuinely like it and I think people listening to it for the first time on stage will too. I’m glad Jenny gets to be more present in the song: the rap part is really good, but after that it feels really weird to listen to her singing “yeah, yeah”, “huh, huh” and nothing else. I hope San Marino qualifies this year: after all that the Sammarinese delegation did, they really deserve it, though I admit the the whole internet candidate thingy didn’t work out for the best, but this… Read more »

I know, I was so stunned when I learned that Jessika and Jenifer beat Sara. I just hope Austria paid attention to this debacle and decides to select her internally with a great song – she deserves to be on that ESC stage

I’d really like to Support San Marino or Jenifer and Basti who are both from my Country, but this song is so bad…. Sorry, no.

Well, Margaret can’t file a copyright claim against Jenifer Brening (only the songwriters of “Cool Me Down” might) but overall it’s still a hilarious story!

Frysk, Peter = solo female and mediocre pop songs obsession LOL. J+J are much more interesting, it is girl duo, there is rap… Ok, they wont make good result, but Sara would be last in semi final, absolutely flat typical ESC song from last decade. Problem is typical ESC fans want the same again and again LOL. Please, dont decide and dont vote in national finals, you will save Eurovision LOL

I’m really looking forward to the release of “Out of the twilight” on March 30th. That’s the real good thing about that San Marino mess of 2018…

So THANKS for introducing Sara! And good luck in Lisbon to the so-called “winners”. You’ll need it.

San Marino is beyond saving. If Sara de Blue had won, SM would have had the highest place ever in ESC. Now it’s meh.
