The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to rank and review the 43 songs competing in Eurovision 2018. Next we head to the United Kingdom where two-time Belgium backing singer SuRie has her song “Storm”. Were we prepared for the weather? Read on to find out!

SuRie – “Storm”

“Storm” reviews

Angus: Some storms cause devastation when they make landfall, others run out of steam before they arrive. SuRie’s storm falls into the latter case. She has a lovely voice, can perform with real gusto and has past Eurovision experience that suggests she won’t suffer from nerves on the big stage in Lisbon like past UK entries. But as always with the UK, the song just isn’t there. If the ambition is to creep into the Top 20, this will do just fine. But the UK should want more. And in that sense, “Storm” is severely lacking in ambition.

Score: 4/10

Anthony: Even though SuRie wasn’t my first choice, she nailed it on the night when it really mattered. In contrast to Lucie Jones’ effort last year, the revamp doesn’t seem to make a huge difference. And with every listen to that clichéd chorus, my brain keeps reminding me with flashbacks to the jingle from a certain Hampson Hughes advert. After last year’s extravaganza, staging will be crucial for the UK.

Score: 6/10

Antranig: “Storm” is a beautiful song and SuRie’s vocals are certainly her biggest asset. Unfortunately there is little to suggest that “Storm” isn’t anything but middle of the pack. It’s a good song but there’s no wow factor, no je ne sais quoi. It will be fun to listen to and enjoyable for the three minutes SuRie is on stage in Lisbon but in terms of results, this won’t turn around the UK’s fortunes.

Bernardo: First of all, SuRie deserved better. Such a talented young lady. “Storm” is that middle-of-the-road song that would grace your Spotify playlist but 30 minutes later you wouldn’t remember it. All this to make a point: everything that works in this is SuRie or because of SuRie, not the song. I — unfortunately — don’t predict a nice future for this song in Lisbon.

Chris: Storms don’t last forever, but “Storm” certainly hangs around for a while. Props to the BBC here: they’ve come up with a song that really works well in an arena. In studio form, the track doesn’t come to life as much. But having experienced the reaction and the anthemic quality SuRie can produce live, there’s real merit here. This could replicate the feeling Michal Szpak created, and maybe just help the UK’s continued creep up the table.

Score: 7/10

William: SuRie’s voice is light but sounds profound, it’s smokey yet somehow angelic and, yes, it has a glint of Annie Lenox. The song’s inspirational message works well with her unique timbre and the slight revamp makes this feel a titch more modern than what we first heard in February. Ultimately, though, the song lacks oomph and drive, and the verses feel sluggish and plodding. It’s less of a storm and more of a whimper.

Another nice song that will probably end up lower than it should. It’s fine. But also a little on the bland side. I can see it’s merits but somehow it still does little for me. Would not want to listen to this on repeat. But decent.

I hated this when it won You Decide, but looking at it in retrospect I can see why it won. The revamp strips some soul out of the song, however I don’t think that was necessarily a bad move. Surie has an incredible voice and great stage presence, but I don’t think it will land the song anywhere past bottom 10.

I really like SuRie’s voice, reminiscent of the diva Annie Lennox, and her stage presence is absolutely amazing. I am sucker for anthems in Eurovision and big choruses, so this also gets extra positive points from me. The new version did some subtle but positive changes in the rhythm giving it slightly more modern feel. But here is exactly the problem of the song, in my view. If this finishes in the bottom 5, all of the British Eurovision fans need to complain and start a rebellion to the BBC to change the format of You Decide. Introduce international juries, introduce an online poll (so people across Europe can vote). The BBC really need to get their act together because it’s painful to be a British Eurovision fan (despite we’re capable of sending a better song). Terrible, I rate this 2/10, yes her biggest asset is the fact that she has had some background in the Eurovision bubble, but that’s all to it. If I were to change the UK selection, here’s what I’d do: – Introduce international juries, like most of the selections (or at least a lot of the ones I paid attention to. I know the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Estonia, and Malta all had international juries of some sort, and I’m sure there were more than those). I’d focus on the countries that have historically done well (Sweden, Azerbaijan, Greece, Russia, and Ukraine, for instance) and countries with good ties to the U.K. (Ireland, Malta, Australia, the rest of the Big 5). There’s a lot of really nice ideas there, Joe! You obviously really care about the UK selection and have thought about it a lot. The main problem the BBC may have in delivering on your ideas is budget. It all sounds very expensive (Camilla Cabello doesn’t come for free). As a licence fee-based public broadcaster, it will be hard to justify such an extravagant budget and outlay for an event that is not currently a major draw on the calendar. The big problem is viewing figures rather than budget. The last time the BBC went all out on a Eurovision related show was for the 60th Anniversary celebration. It barely scraped 1 million viewers in prime time. No commissioner is going to take that kind of risk. The budget is there but it has to produce results. The EU flags were handed out by the pro-Remain BBC as part of its anti Brexit campaign running through its news and programme agendas. Here’s a tip that would save all the hoop-la you suggest above. Select a reasonably current artist who has had a hit or two but is maybe on the cusp of a downward trend – one who can sing and perform live (and definitely not an X Factor reject) Then find a modern contemporary song, one which was not written specifically for Eurovision. I think it’s another way-too-syrupy hold-your-hand-and-sing-Kumbaya UK entry. They have plenty of people who can write hopeful and universal songs that are also tough and cool. Witness Rag ‘n Bone Man. But they always go sappy, even for Eurovision. This is going to finish fairly low.

This is what bothers me the most. We’re not talking about a small country with a tiny music industry. We’re talking about a powerhouse. BBC isn’t a fragile public broadcaster without much money to spend, it’s a brand known worldwide. They find great new talent every single year with their “Sound of…” series. I googled it here and actually, she came from the “BBC Music Introducing” program. This one is a radio project while the “Sound of…” is made by the BBC News website. But that’s another good example of how BBC has great tools to find new artists and don’t use them properly to find Eurovision acts.

I like the idea of foreign songwriters working side by side with local talent, so they can exchange experiences. If a country just “buy a song”, this could help to get a good result, but it won’t change a thing to the local industry. It’s like naturalizing athletes to get an olympic medal without developing the sport on your country. You can’t force artists to compete against their will. You can’t force song writers to share their top work if they don’t want to.

Unfortunately Eurovision is still viewed as a kiss of death in the U.K. which no “Sound of” artist would go near before their career has even begun. When the BBC Eurovision team gets an artist to participate, the wider broadcaster shows no support before or after the contest so there’s no real advantage to participating.

You know that song on the B side of an album that was made only as a filler upper for the album… It will likely be forgotten about when the voting starts. It will place 20th at best. The more I try to like this entry, the more I end up just not caring about it. The word that just keeps coming to mind is “derivative” everything about this entry has been done before and better somewhere. I like the spirit of the song. The lyrics are very simple, but surprisingly they work for me (except for “chasing rainbows” :P). But it’s not a unique composition. Unfortunately, I like it even less after the revamp. It doesn’t fit the oldschool feeling.

Although I think this has been too underrated by fans, plus the Wiwibloggs comment section is completely toxic (which is NOT what heartfelt British Eurovision fans what to read). It’ s simple, the juries give points to 12 countries, the ndividuals in the public only give their votes, and multiple times too, to their absolute favourite. You can give 20 votes to just one song, so it’s much more polarized, only the entries that stuck out are given votes. An ok song does not receive votes.

Looking up for details, some positive sides: interesting vocal timbre, cute lyrics.
But then another details that make all mediocrity: lyrically it’s halfly poured by cheese; pace that doesn’t compliment SuRie vocals and together with couple of pale chords it makes a languid locked track that turns song as pretty repetitive.

UNITED KINGDOM – SuRie is an amazing performer live! We can all agree that she elevated the song. But, the song itself is certainly more of a mixed bag. The verses are quite lovely and really well written. They bring nostalgia and feel really personal. Then the chorus comes with a repetitive sing-along story about storms / life’s troubles. There was no winning potential in their national final, but at least they had some Songs that could have made it out of the bottom.The best choices would have been either ”Legends” or ”You”. Yeah, I can see some similarities between Germany 2017 and UK 2018 – Both are mid-tempo wannabe inspirational pop songs which don’t deliver up to their potential. Both are a huge-let down, yet performed by capable and likable singers. Perfect Life ended-up semi last. Storms might too. Or last, since no other Big 5 song is as bad as Do It For Your Lover.

This entry just doesn’t seem to work for me. I get the idea, but it’s just way too simple to make a major impact in the contest. The chorus is memorable, but in kind of an annoying way. It sounds like a song from an educational children’s TV show (just replace the lyrics with “Our friendship lasts forever, forever, remember/We can hold our hands together” and so on…). SuRie is a decent performer and technically flawless, but her military-like rigour emphasises the song’s underwhelming simplicity even more (especially in the live version). Well for the third year running the pre-contest favourites did not win the UK NF, that can only happen in the UK and that is a major problem. For the third year running the BBC just read out the winner, this is just not good enough. For the third year running I think the BBC’s preferred artist went through. Agree. She is better than the song. But do you think the brittich music industry have any intrest to give theier best songs to your national selection show. I don’t think BBC have a lot of good songs to offer. I mait be wrong but I think thats the problem.

I have tried to submit songs myself in the past, but it seems that the BBC has recently been going in a more specialist “songwriting camp” direction.

Probably the best person to ask about the situation now is Helen Riddell, the new HoD. Wiwibloggs – please ask her for an interview. Particularly ask about how new songwriters can get involved in the process. Thanks.

Ok, I think the process in sweden seems to be a way to get rather good songs. I think a jurygroup chose the songs in a process but not only that. Recordcompanies want to make many and they need melfest as a platform for the artists. So it’s in their intrest that their artists participate.

Malin :- The UK has some of the best songwriters and artists in the world but they are dead scared to be involved in the ESC as they do not want to be humiliated and “put their careers at risk”. Purple Mask :- As far as I am aware Helen Riddell is only acting/interim Head of Delegations this year for the UK as Guy Freeman departed in February. The BBC has yet to announce who will be the permanent HOD moving forward.

The BBC already has an open song submission process for anyone, but it has to be a proper demo with an artist, that’s the hard part. I quite like the Songwriting camps though.

I’ve contacted Guy Freeman on two occasions. I quite fancy trying to co-write an entry for the UK!!!!!!!

I know many don’t like if someone talk abot the melfest. But maby UK could take the best part. The long way to get better and beter songwriters. It’s god bussniss if your song take part in melfest. Winning is’t the goal for the most. You are a winner if you are in the final. You will partisipate in a lot of diffrent tv shows the next year. Elin & Malin :- It’s okay if you are doing well in the ESC and have the exposure of top 10 finishes so then Melfest works for Sweden. The Melfest process would not help or work for the UK as the UK is currently struggling to get 6 decent songs let alone 28. Also as we have seen over the last 3 years in the UK, the BBC basically chooses amateur artists who are mainly from reality singing shows and did not even succeed in those shows. Former ESC winner Emmelie De Forest from Denmark co-wrote the UK’s 2016 entry for Lucie Jones with two other songwriters. So it is already currently being done in a sort-of songwriting camp method. Has it encouraged more established English songwriters to change their minds about Eurovision? With the exception of Ed Sheeran and a few other people this year, I would say mostly “no”. Sorry to be so negative.

Jon and Malin :- Actually the UK has been using writers and producers outside the UK for several years, mainly from Sweden and of course Emmelie De Forest last year and Greta Salóme this year. One of the co-writers of SuRie’s “Storm” is Australian born and learnt her trade in Sweden, another learnt his trade in the US. Remember Katrina (1997 UK winner) was American. If the UK wants to be in the lower end of the scoreboard at least theycould send some bad campy fun act. Surie is just bland.

I think that the BBC needs to start choosing their entry more carefully. Ending in like place 23 every year must be boring. Nothing indicates that Surie will end that run this year

About SuRie:
yeah this is another Perfect Life, it’s very catchy and not bad, but the lyrics are one of the worst this year… But this will finish last for sure, I can’t see any people voting for it, maybe some points from Irish or Maltese jury, but that’s all in such a strong year. I love her tho! I will give it a 6,5/10.

For me neither Surie is a good singer but her song is too weak. I don’t understand why the BBC continues to choose and the UK public vote these kind o bland nonsense songs to ESC. Doesn’t the UK want to do ok. There were at least one song that could have done ok in the NF. Anyway I predict somewhere between place 15-26. More likely lower, like 20-26. I’m 12 yrs old, I have not watched a Eurovision in my lifetime where the UK has come top 10 ( Started watching in 2011)

I want the UK to do well but the BBC don’t listen, the only care about Strictly and other stuff.

I feel like this song is unfairly underrated. The studio version was nothing special, but she managed to make the whole song a brilliant tune in the NF performance and after the revamp it sounds even better. I think, and hope, many will change their minds during the final.
My vote would be 8.5/ 10.

Yes, this sounds a bit schlagery, and the song doesn’t really fit her pitch, the high notes in the chrous sound a bit strained. In addition, it has a certain sing along, clap along quality to it, that’s a bit much for me, I would like this to stay in the footbal stadium, where it belongs. Other than that, I prefer the verses to the chorus, because they bring out more of her warm timbre and I quite like the melody, until the chorus hits. I don’ understand it either. Ok, her studio version is not great, but it comes alive on stage, especially when sung by such an amazing singer like SuRie. In the NF, you could feel the winner vibes when she sang. I liked Asanda’s song and studio version a lot better, but on the night itself, SuRie was definitely the right decision.
