Commonwealth of Nations ESC 2018

The perennial Commonwealth Games – the international multi-sport event, much like the Olympics – has kicked off today on the Gold Coast of Australia. Athletes from across 71 nations of the Commonwealth (which includes current and former British colonies, and dependants of those colonies) will participate in 15 different sports and more than 250 events.

Although Eurovision is yet to be announced as an event at the Commonwealth Games (keep your fingers crossed for Birmingham 2022), we’re still getting in the spirit. Four member states of the Commonwealth will be participating in Eurovision in Lisbon.

It’s an awesome foursome of girl power, in the form of Australia, Cyprus, Malta and, of course, the United Kingdom (albeit as its individual member states).

The United Kingdom has won Eurovision five times, with their last win in 1997. The island nation of Malta has pulled their weight, placing second in 2002 and 2005. And despite Australia’s short history in the contest, they placed within a whisker of a win in 2016, placing second. Cyprus has placed fifth on three occasions (1982, 1997, 2004).

Take a listen to all 4 songs of the Commonwealth of Nations below, and then vote in our poll. As usual you can vote for as many songs as you like, but you can only vote once!

Eurovision 2018 best entry from Commonwealth of Nations members

Australia: Jessica Mauboy – “We Got Love”

Cyprus: Eleni Foureira – “Fuego”

Malta: Christabelle – “Taboo”

United Kingdom: SuRie – “Storm”

Only Cyprus is good
Malta and Australia are 1000000% generic songs. UK has a good singer but a weak song.

So when do the last wave of Eurovision tickets go on sale? I’ve checked the official partner but there doesn’t seem to be anything there yet and the tickets are supposed to go on sale tomorrow… Does anyone know anything?

Eleni Foureira is a balloon. This woman can not sing. She can dance only… but this is not enough to win. Let’s say bye to Cyprus. 😉

UK (my 10/43): the song itself was nothing special, but SuRie made it wonderful in her NF performance. After the revamp, I’m happy to say that this got even more points with me and it’s the best among these songs. Malta (my 11/43): Unfortunately she went down as more and more song were announced, but managed to stay just outside of my top10, so that’s good. She’s a fantastic singer and performer and I love the meaning of the song (no, the lyrics aren’t messy). Australia (my 15/43): I’m almost sad to give a third place between these four, because… Read more »

1. UK (15. overall) – it’s just such a nice song
2. Malta (16. overall) – I love her performance more than the song itself
3. Cyprus (22. overall) – catchy hoko, but otherwise bland and generic
4. Australia (33. overall) – it’s not a bad song, but it’s bland and forgetable

I’m voting for Australia simply because my background as a musician makes me HATE reggaetón and therefore, Cyprus is for me impossible to listen.

Give the Australian entry to Czech Republic or Montenegro or San Marino…

This will be nowhere to be found on top of the list.

Jees man stop moaning about Eleanor Cassar! She had a good song and didn’t win, big deal. Get over yourself, NF season is well and truly over.. if you wanna pass a decent comment tell us how bad you don’t like Christabelle’s song… a comment I would actually read.

Belarus can win, and stop with the jealousy. You are so in denial, his voice and enunciation are not worse than others, but you attack Alekseev because he is a rival for your favorites. Why don’t you go and cry listening France and Italy again, this is your level.

Listen, I also like Belarus. Alekseev is currently my 9th place. And he has a Special voice, but he can’t sing that well. As much as I want him to do well, I can’t see anything better than 20th place Overall.

Are you well? Lindita had the best voice and nobody cared. Lena had the worst voice and she won in 2010. Manel Navarro made a mistake and he ended last, Isaiah made the same mistake and is jury baby. Face it – nobody cares about the voice. Is not ”The Voice” anyway.

Really, all of them are generic and bland af. Except for Cyprus, which is also kinda generic, but it’s still by far the best out of These. The rest of the Songs are basically my bottom 5… (Christabelle is only bottom 10)

Yeah u definitely think that Cyprus is by far the best out of theese songs , I think Australia is very overrated as it is a boring song with terrible lyrics especially in the chorus , same with the United Kingdom , Malta has a powerful message but I don’t think it’s conveyed well in the song

Yeah, Malta is kinda alright. It sounds quite messy, the lyrics are pretty bad but I still kinda enjoy it. UK and Australia however are one of the only Songs I strongly dislike. Not because they’re as objetively bad as Do it for your Lover (which I still like more than These two Songs), but because they are so uncreative and soulless, I can’t handle it. And the Performers would deserve better Songs.
