Latvia, Laura Rizzotto, 1

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to rank and review the 43 songs competing in Eurovision 2018. Next we head to Latvia where the Latvian-Brazilian singer Laura Rizzotto has “Funny Girl”. Were we laughing along with her? Read on to find out!

Laura Rizzotto – “Funny Girl”

“Funny Girl”

Jordi: Subtle yet classy, Laura Rizzotto’s “Funny Girl” serves a proper bittersweet love story. She’s not just the “funny girl” in her lover’s life but a star who is ready to serve a memorable and sultry performance. Her delivery is exquisite and with that tone, featuring some doses of attractiveness and fierceness, sets up the listener to listen to her story. Her performance at Supernova was stellar. With its same vibrant and clever camera shots, Latvia should be a contender for the grand final.
Score

Score: 7/10

Angus: “Funny Girl” is no laughing matter: it’s a dark intense slice of Bond-lite balladry, pushed forwards by beats, brass and Laura’s strong vocal. It may not be one of the best songs in the contest, but Latvia has one of the best overall packages. As they learned last year, having a performer who can nail their vocal and deliver the performance can matter more than having a song that sounds good on the dancefloor.

Score: 5/10

Anthony: A bluesy jazz-infused self-penned number from this Latvian-Brazilian beauty, it’s a far cry from her country of birth. And there’s nothing funny about it — Laura’s classy live performance oozes elegance at Supernova. However, Eurovision is a completely different ball game. As a result, Latvia’s possible concern is that casual viewers might find this as appealing as soggy risotto.

Score: 7.5/10

Deban: Laura Rizzotto is seductive, looks confident and sounds accomplished. However, the intimate feeling this song creates may also be its downfall. “Funny Girl” may soar in a jazz lounge, but it loses grip on a big stage. Furthermore, in a sea of other songs, there is a big risk of this entry drowning.

Score: 6/10

Jovana: I gave a 7 to “Funny Girl” during Supernova, I am giving it an 8 now. I guess it will be at least a 9 in Lisbon — that is, if Latvia provides with the right stage production and if Laura kills it with her vocals. This is a song that deserves a good result and that would be a worldwide hit if it were performed by an internationally famous artist. So Latvia, do not let it down.

Score: 8.5/10

Padraig: Funnily enough, this passed me by entirely during Supernova. And it’s a similar story now that it’s at Eurovision. Like Croatia, this is simply lounge music and arguably even more generic. Some say it would be right at home on one of the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtracks – maybe, if the film series is planning on abandoning seduction and scandal for passable dullness. Much of Latvia’s diaspora have made their home in Ireland. And this entry would fit right in with that country’s crop of non-descript Eurovision entries. Aminata feels like a distant memory.

Score: 2.5/10

In the Wiwi Jury we have 20 jurors but only have room for six reviews. The remaining scores are below:

Antranig: 7.5/10

Bernardo: 6/10

Bogdan: 5/10

Chris: 6.5/10

Cinan: 6.5/10

Jonathan: 6/10

Kristin: 6.5/10

Luis: 6.5/10

Renske: 7.5/10

Robyn: 6.5/10

Ron: 10/10

Sebastian: 5/10

Steinunn: 8/10

William: 5/10

We have removed the highest and lowest scores prior to calculating the average. This is to remove outliers and potential bias. We have removed a low of 2.5 and a high of 10.

Wiwi Jury verdict: 6.47/10

I like this and it’s in my top 15. I don’t think it will do particularly well, though. Undeserved as that may be: It’s introvert, probably a little too complicated and not instant. But classy.

For me, this is similar to Belgium’s offering this year although I prefer this. I think because there’s more personality in this one.

When “Funny Girl” won in Latvia, I was ecstatic. Sorry for this, but the Esamiba fandom screwed the song from me, even though I personally liked it. I still believe Esamiba could have crashed in the Semi, now with Israel in the competition. Now, let’s get to the song. It’s one of the three Bond entries this year, behind Belgium but above Croatia. It’s a middle of the pack of the song, not the best, but definitely not the last. The song has that sultry “50 Shades of Grey” vibe which is kinda enjoyable, it goes with the flow even… Read more »

I honestly thought that literally every song in Supernova was better than this. I didn’t even pay attention until it won. To me it’s just so bland and dull. It has nice moments but overall it lacks a spark. This is a 4/10 for me. I much prefer Croatia, which is almost the same but dramatic.

I have issue with plodding effect that comes a bit too repetitive. Yet lyrically it’s packed to degree I feel some interlude done by bridge could release heaviness of it.

Well-thought simple visuals and well performed, it obviously gives a good route to the song.

I don’t like this as much as I did when I first heard it, but I still think it’s an enjoyable and pleasant song to listen to. Laura has great stage presence but they do need to work on their staging because I was bored out of my mind watching Laura stand on stage flicking her hair around for three minutes. She’s a very good live singer. That said, I don’t think this will do very well. If it qualifies it will get maybe 15th at best.

Love Laura…she is a great singer.
But this song is completely generic and boring.
Something like her own song “Red Flags” would fit perfect for ESC…

While Laura is competent and brings what this kind of song needs for it to work, I feel the composition is still a little bit dented. The chorus runs through too quickly and the verses aren’t really memorable, which would make this one hard to get by for the excited public at home. Laura really needs to bring a live that’s perfect to the tiniest detail, and even then I feel on a song-basis this would struggle. Sadly, because she smashes it as a performer.

Beating a competent, albeit, without a standout song, field at Supernova is much easier to do than compete at Eurovision. Even at Supernova, I forgot about LR until she actually got on the stage and performed. This is not the best song but she can really perform it well. The question is, can she perform this better than 9 others in her semi-final? Again, I am doubtful. This song is definitely subtle but I don’t have many strong feelings about it besides her ability to completely commit to it on stage.

I agree with most of the jury. It’s possibly the most underrated entry this year. I don’t see it winning this year’s competition. However, it certainly adds the quality and smart lyrics to the Eurovision game.

I liked this one since the first time I’ve listened to it, when Supernova showed us dozens of song and asked people to like their favorites on their website. Back then I would never expect for this to be chosen. Not just because I already knew it was too subtle to Eurovision standards, but also because “Esamiba” (Madara, you’ll be missed) caught my attention right away. It turns out that Laura won the right to represent Latvia on the stage, giving a well thought and flawless performance. She has taken benefit from being the underdog. Or from the fact that… Read more »

It’s just the second time we agreed on a rating though. The other one was UK’s. It doesn’t help that I use a 0.25 system, I know. 😛

But I get in this particular case we’re on the minority. I wish Latvia had more love online, I’ll suffer for them and for Hungary on the second semifinal.

Hahaha, but you can do that Tibor. Just don’t deny that she has beautiful hair!

I think it’s part of the character of she’s playing on the stage, but I understand that other people may feel that’s too much. It’s like Lucie Jones last year, she was using her acting skills and that went both ways depending on people’s opinions about bringing that kind of performance to the contest.

This is the third one of the Bond-girls trio others being Belgium and Croatia. For me of this group this song is by far the best one and might well be in my top ten. The song is classy from beginning to end and her vocals are both warm and voluptuous, a part from being extremely competent performer. You here that there is genuine talent behind this song and the production is flawless. I really whish it all the best. The only thing it is maybe that is lacks a crescendo and some twist that would make more memorable. As… Read more »

ANYWAY…
Latvia…I had high hopes as I think Supernova is one of the best NF of the season and Latvia had a really good run from 2015-2016 as a result. But damn have the missed the mark here. For anyone who hasn’t heard the song, its basically your typical eurovision entry. Woman in dress, shouts. It’s a no from me. Even Latvia’s entry last year was better than this. 4/10

Very interesting and with a strong beat. Laura is definitely a capable performer and delivers this very well. Also, the title and topic of the song are very smart and well thought. It might be hard for Latvia to qualify, given their unfortunate place in the running order but they absolutely deserve to be in the final.

I find Latvia a bit overrated this year. “Funny Girl” tries to be something else, but it’s very underwhelming for me. There were other better options in Supernova: Sudden Lights, Edgar Kreilis, Madara, Markus Riva,… Latvia is going to relay in a meticulously measured staging, but will probably end up like Georgia last year or worse. Latvia in my 34th place: 11. Italy (7.25) 13. Lithuania (7) 14. Denmark (7) 15. FYR Macedonia (7) 18. Poland (7) 21. Armenia (6.75) 23. Slovenia (6.5) 24. Ireland (6.5) 26. Croatia (6.25) 29. The night this was chosen, I was way too busy with the four other entries that got selected. This wasn’t my fave in Latvia, but its still a good entry. I can see this being great on stage, as sdhe doesnt really need LEDs. Her voice is great and I can see the juries going for this, even tho it’s quite tame. In SF 2 she will really stand out between the big performances from Hungary and Sweden.

Funny thing that the last chorus sounded the best – when only her backing singers sang…
Actually, many of the Moscow live performances were rather weak. Azerbaijan’s Aisel had big difficulties to control her voice f.ex. The only one who brought a surprisingly good live show was Malta’s Christabelle in my opinion…

I actually really like it! I love this mysterious, jazzy mood. Some may compare it to Croatian entry, but this one is much better. It actually tells a story and is full of emotion. This is one of my personal faves, and I dare to say this will be one of the biggest surprises of year. I will start with the lyrics- they are so relate-able, everybody must have felt like an outside (in love) at some point in time. She captured that feeling soooo well. Moreover, Laura is a great performer, and she gives me the same jazzy vibe Salvador gave last year. I disagree with the lounge music comment- if this lounge music, so is Ed Sheeran or Sam Smith. It’s because no one here criticises a song musically, unless you can say you have gone to Columbia university or an institution of that stature you cannot possibly comment. You don’t have any qualifications though, Grade 5 Clarinet here and you will NEVER see me criticise a piece musically.

I don’t know what’s happened, but this year in particular seems to have brought out some vehement trolls out from under their bridges. Why, I wish I knew the answer to, but they really, really need to disappear. When I come to read the Wiwi Jury’s opinions, as soon as I’ve finished I skip through the comments to see whether you’ve posted and read them. I really enjoy reading your views on the music in particular for the insight into how the songs I like… Read more »

I don’t see a reason why you should disappear from Wiwibloggs… As you said, everyone has a right to express their own opinions, and your reviews (and their criteria) depend only on you. Personally, I think you put a lot of effort in your posts, plus they are original in their form, that is why I appreciate them.

Mask, as far as I know you haven’t disrespected anyone with your reviews. Also, nobody from the blog’s team had complained about it, so I see no reason for you to leave, though I would understand if you decide to do it, since nobody should feel the obligation to keep commenting when they don’t feel their thoughts are respected. Just make sure to let me know where I could find of reviews if you decide it’s time to go. Guys, there’s no need to be so serious about the comments here. This is a fan blog to Eurovision and the… Read more »

Thanks Sabrina. I love what you write as well; please keep on writing. 🙂
I would prefer not to share the remaining reviews at this time, and I think that is for the best.

It’s your choice and I respect it. Isn’t there any social network you could share your reviews with those who want to read them? I’m starting to think Wiwibloggs could create a forum, that way people could follow the discussions they prefer to read, without creating so many unnecessary friction. I think @Roo was suggesting something on that lane. It would be easier to spot trolls and more people would feel “safe” to give their opinion. I would bet many people read the comments, would like to share an opinion, but whey they see people being attacked or ignored, they… Read more »

Thanks Sabrina, but for me personally it’s not just about trolls on a blog. Musicians I work with in real life have argued with me over similar issues involving critiques. I have made big mistakes. The reviews are related to that, so frankly I would rather burn my reviews right now.
As for social networks, I pretty much left all of them in 2013. Wiwibloggs for a long time was my only real public outlet. I have met some amazing people on here, and I will continue to follow the blog when I can.

Thank you all for your honesty, and sorry for causing such a long thread of replies. I will no longer be posting reviews on here. I think that’s the right decision based both on feedback here, and from an important conversation I had last year at a music event. I do still believe in free speech about music, but making this year’s reviews appear “professional” was a mistake. I realise that now, and I apologise. To those who were looking forward to the remaining reviews: Thank you. It means a lot. I will continue to read what you write, and… Read more »

Oh Purple Mask… I think you should write whatever you want, as all others do… I don’t think your reviews are long (last year there were longer). There are super-well structured and give always super-good insights. What is more, there is never one shred of cynicism or hate, on the contrary always trying to get something positive out of it. Actually, I was very happy so far with the comments section this year. Up until now, they have been much more elevated than last year, thanks to you and the likes of Sabrina, Colin and others. My impressions:
-Electronica and R&B.
-Reminded me of Aminata a bit in her voice.
-Not funny at all.
-May have a chance, but it’s not a strong song. It’ll depend on staging.

Not a fan of the song, to be fair

Ah, that’s interesting you picked up on R&B there. I hadn’t noticed that! 🙂

The song is just like Italy’s song in the sense that the melody is indistinct and the singer is speaking rather than singing in most parts. She performs well live but for sure there were many better options in Latvian NF. I am not a fan and was quite surprised when it started getting hyped in Latvia
A 5/10.
Also Belgium and Croatia did it better with this slow dark theme.

A 0/10 song is still descriptable!
This song is literally non-descript

I didn’t rate Croatia with a 0/10. There is a song there despite how much someone dislikes it

Good voice and talanted performer but song sounds a bit repetitive … though its still way better than Russia’ song which probably will steal someone’ place in GF

Latvia had two amazing Options: Madara and Sudden Lights. Both acts delivered totally different, outstanding and Special Songs and I’m sure that both would have ended up on the left side of the scoreboard easily… In fact, ”Just fine” was my favourite song of the whole NF Season. Funny Girl is ,like Croatia, a song, that is totally okay.. But that’s it. I know, People are praising Laura for being such a great Performer, but she’s actually not… At least in Terms of vocals. Her voice is just very, very weak and not big enough for a song like that…… Read more »

Both Just Fine and Esamiba would certainly be in my top 10, but I like Funny Girl too. It was my third fav, and even if I am a bit disappointed, we did get a good song at least. It could have been something as boring as Who’s Counting or Lovers Bliss.

So, 5/10 may be surprising, but hey… Just wait for the Ratings of San Marino, Russia, Romania and Iceland… It gets even worse. The lowest scores I gave until now were a 2.5/10 for Azerbaijan and a 2/10 for UK. While it won’t get lower than 2/10, I promise that there’ll be some 3/10s.

You must separate your taste from actual predictions, because it looks like the reality will not favor your taste about most countries you named.

Oh, so you think that Romania, Iceland, Russia, UK and San Marino will all rock the final? If you think that, I’m sorry, but you’ll be the one to lose Money then… None of These are going any higher than 23rd place.

Now it’s too late to talk about them, we need to evaluate what they are sending to Lisbon.
But yes! Esamiba would easily win that 2nd semifinal, which is beyond underwhelming.
Laura can actually qualify, saved by the juries and good running order. Also, there are lots of Brazilians in Europe, so who knows…
However, once qualified, it’s a candidate for the 26th in the final.

Yeah, I know that the case is closed now… And I think Laura is more likely to qualify, because I expect the Jury to give her many Points. In the final however…. Well, she could fight for the last place with the UK. In my eyes she wouldn’t deserve that place (especially if Russia qualifies), but it could happen.

The order of songs is like one song gets added on top, then one in middle and then one on the bottom.
So we know that all songs already reviewed are middling … such a boring order!who chose this?

So full disclosure, Madara would’ve been my overall winner had she won Supernova. However, I honestly feel like a lot of people are dismissing this entry way too quickly. If you look a bit underneath the surface you should realise that there is actually a lot going on here! I am impressed with how much Laura is able to do with this. She infuses a mixture of pop and jazz, and the mixture of the minimalist snare drums and cymbals, along with a some really quiet strings help create ambience and mood, and feels oh so seductive. Also, they bring… Read more »

LATVIA – Funny Girl is my fifth favorite from Latvia’s overall selection and third favorite from the live shows. It’s kind of paradoxical refering to yourself as a ‘funny girl’ while serving such a sultry performance. But that’s kind of the point – Showing to her love interest that she could be so much more if he would care to look. The whole song is very seductive and well constructed, even if it feels like it lacks the final punch to make it a strong contender for the win. But considering Laura’s seemingly effortless, yet stunning performance, this just has… Read more »

Thanks Colin. Agreed: Laura is an outstanding live performer, interpreter and songwriter. This entry is very much all about her, since even the music is hers too. I know what some people mean about the “50 shades” comparison, but I don’t find this particular song as seductive or as dark as that; I find it more theatrical with all the calculated moves and expressions. I really enjoy it as expressive art, which I know is a cliché, but there it is. 🙂

8/10. I love this song; it’s sounds like a hit that came directly out of 50 shades. Her voice carries the emotion of the song very well. I presume the block colouring of red and black will be carried across for staging. I think this will qualify.
