During the grand final of Eurovision 2018, she came to embody her song’s message of perseverance when she kept singing after a stage invader attempted to ruin her moment.

And if some British Eurofans have their way, SuRie will return to the Eurovision stage next year for an invasion-free performance.

SuRie enthusiast Conor Wells launched the petition on Sunday and by Wednesday afternoon had collected 1,580 signatures.

The petition reads:

We all agree that SuRie did amazingly well to cope with a stage invasion that occured during her performance at Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal.

We, the petitioners, believe that the BBC should offer SuRie the chance to represent the UK once again at the 2019 contest in Israel as a gesture for her professionalism and resilience.

We also believe that the song should be decided by a Public vote, it could involve 3 songs each performed by SuRie. the titles of the programme could be “SuRie:You Decide” or “A Song for SuRie”

We look forward to hearing further news about the UK’s participation at Eurovision 2019 in Israel.

Staging a national final for a single artist to choose his or her song is a tried and tested method, and one that frequently results in songs that become fan favourites.

In 2012 Spain utilised the method for Pastora Soler, resulting in the timeless ballad “Quedate conmigo”, and Cyprus did the trick for Ivi Adamou, who ended up with Euroclub staple “La La Love”. Just this year Finland staged an epic national final to choose Saara Aalto’s “Monsters”, and for a time she was the favourite to win Eurovision 2018.

Readers on the wiwibloggs web site have floated similar ideas. Writing in the comments section, a reader named Euan said:

“What an icon! Handled the situation amazingly and still delivered. Absolutely amazing!”

“She should go again for the UK next year. The BBC needs to do what Finland this year with Saara and give her 3 songs to choose from or something. Surie’s Song: You Decide…”

https://twitter.comwillyleeadams/status/995391864848216064

SuRie — real name Susanna Marie Cork — recently spoke with ITV’s Philip Schofield about her ordeal.

The “Storm” singer explained she had no time to feel fear.

“He was suddenly there, security were suddenly on him as quick as he was on me. He got the mic. For a few seconds that was out of my hands but the song was still going, the backing vocalists were still singing, the crowd was still chanting … I turned back and I saw the mic on the floor and I went ‘Well, that’s mine and I’ll finish this song.'”

SuRie was left with a few minor injuries. She explained that she had bruises on both her hands and her shoulder where the stage invader had grabbed her and pulled her mic away. But she clarified, “I’m ok, I’m ok”.

While the situation was shocking for her, it sparked an “internal fire” that kept SuRie going. “You can see that in my eyes,” she said with a smile. “The lyrics took on a new meaning – ‘hold your head up, don’t give up.”

SuRie was also rewarded with support from the crowd, who were firmly on her side. “The surge from them: that’s my lasting memory of this.”

What do you think about the petition? Have you signed? Do you think SuRie deserves another shot? Let us know in the comments down below!

Update: This petition has since been taken down. Here is the explanation from the author:

“ I have taken the decision to withdraw the petition as it is becoming clear that SuRie will not be doing Eurovision next year.

I certainly hope it changes.

I would like to thank you all for your support.”

Did you see the bookies’ boards after the stage-crasher got his 5 seconds of “fame”? I thought they stopped all bets cold at 2100 CET (3:00 P.M., New York City time); but they kept taking bets until the jury roll call. SuRie was 23rd at the start of the show, but after all the singers were finished, she shot up to EIGHTH! Late bettors rewarded her for her courage in staying the course after the punk was escorted off stage, and I imagine many thought she might be the recipient of a slew of sympathy points… …Unfortunately, even the Jimmy… Read more »

She was 5th before the voting. Most people betting come from UK and Ireland, so they probably thought the invasion could impress the viewers.

Well, those betting odds are compiled only in the UK and Ireland. They are not pan-European or anything, so Brits thought to boost SuRie’s chances but they failed miserably and now face a withdrawal due to their stunt having been disclosed as INTENTIONAL!

They have finished in the bottom-half of the table for all but 2 years since their nul-point showing in 2003. If this is true, that some people in the U.K. delegation set the whole thing up right from the start (whether SuRie knew or not), then one must ask the following: Have they really run out of ideas so completely that they believe that they must resort to desperation ploys like this? Not only was it stupid, but it was potentially dangerous. Security could have responded far more forcefully than the orchestrators of this stage-crashing expected. Having failed miserably in… Read more »

Just some thoughts: as it seemed bangers & solo love songs seems to have done quite well in some instances during this year’s contest, I’m wondering what could’ve been UK’s rank if they have sent Asada’s banger “Legends” (of course, assuming it got a revamp, more stable vocal performance, back up vocals) or Liam’s male ballad “Astronaut” (maybe in a more acoustic version & Germany-esque staging). Surie’s song was neither her nor there, so it kinda felt the UK missed some chances from there national selection. The 2 above by no means will not win, but maybe rank a bit… Read more »

She didn’t finished last thankfully. No offense, but why Portugal always sends these songs? Uk was a bit more memorable and could sing better. Bless her, hope they don’t send the same type as song as usual.

Under the scoring procedure of 2009-2015, she would have finished last. Nevertheless, back in the bottom 6 (i.e., outside the top 20) they fell. Which means that, if they had to go through the semis like 37 other countries, the U.K. might not have qualified.

You might be on to something there, bub! 🙂

But better for her to have new producers for her next song, in case the U.K. sends her again. We don’t want another Ralph Siegel type putting the U.K. in the same stranglehold that he did with San Marino, making it impossible for them to progress. SMR are literally starting from scratch.

At least some of those Siegel ditties were interesting lol. The UK has been playing it far to safe, all a bit middle of the road in recent years and that gets you nowhere in Eurovision. Plus San Marino have an excuse for being a wee bit crap. Probably more people living on my street than in the whole country. Its endearing that they at least try. The UK really has no excuse at all. Anyway Surie will probably be back with the Walloons next year.

I worked back stage and your accusation is an insult to the professionalism of the EBU. They would never allow a delegation to get away with this and Surie knew she had no chance of winning and would never risk her career for a stunt like that!

Well.. You’re not wrong but what about this..
Eurovision wouldn’t be the great Show Event without that big financial Support. It could be that small countries are not able to participate again for example. What’s worse? A founding member supporting the ESC with Money and going straight to the final as a reward or no financial Support. Everyone goes through the semifinals and everything is a lot smaller because some countries have to withdraw and the whole Event has to keep it down because of the Budget. Both is possible. You can argue about it

I’d be happy if SuRie wanted another go at eurovision. She has been a great ambassador for the UK throughout the whole build up to eurovision and the way she handled that awful situation of a stage invasion, I have nothing but respect for her. Arise dame SuRie! The only thing that let her down was the non competitive song. A perfectly fine pop song, but not at all suited for a competition. However, I think her expertise would be better if she was part of the BBC eurovision team. But what’s the betting that the BBC won’t even begin… Read more »

In my opinion the reason Surie won the National was because she took that mediocre song and turned it into something special with her emotional performance. She was right there next to the crowd and they could see and feel her power. At Eurovision they killed all that by putting her in that “cage” away from the audience and the feedback. It wasn’t until after the incident that she got that same fire she had at the National final and she stepped up to the front of the stage by the audience and infused that song with raw emotion and… Read more »

Why three songs? In the past artists have had 8 songs to sing. Let’s make it 12 and get her an album out of them all.

When a song has been chosen, let’s have another contest and have 4x versions of the one song to choose from.

This would be a great idea…, why not? The BBC change things up every few years or so and this would be the perfect opportunity to do so again. SuRie is a quality performer and has become much loved amount the Eurovision family. She’s also very creative so she could write the songs we choose from herself. The results from Eurovision:You Decide haven’t exactly been stellar so let’s do some format switching!

Good petition. But yo, do not take example of Finland. Shouty singer with three abysmal songs? SuRie has been through enough, she should get ONE decent song, instead pulling a Saara Aalto.
Also, I’d love a petition for the Eurovision to be taken away from the EBU. At this point, I’d rather have Björkman run the entire thing. That’s how despicable and untrustworthy the EBU has become. Gross: They even edited SuRie’s real performance in their YouTube video advertised as the “full show”.

The UK used to always stage their national selections like this.
Pick an artist and then have them perform submitted songs.

Some of the UKs best results have been through a
selection process like this.

I think it would be a great idea for the UK since it seems most of the You decide entries are written before a singer is selected anyway.
This way SuRie will be able to put her own stamp on the song and JOWST is even asking for singers to help him submit a song so it actually makes perfect sense.

I don’t think she would do it again simply because she would want others to have the Eurovision experience. Maybe that’s just my my bias coming through as I’m not a fan when artists return – give someone else a shot. But I do think that’s how she would feel.

I tend to agree, she is a generous soul for sure, but I certainly would not begrudge her a chance to come back. It doesn’t even make much sense, anyway, because she refused a repeat performance of Storm, feeling that there was no need – coming back year would go against that sentiment.

I’d be very happy for this. We know she can perform well so there’s no worries there. We just need a strong song for her. Maybe more than 3. Perhaps 6. I know people say that might be a stretch with outfit changes. Maybe just have a generic outfit she can wear for all songs and then work on the out for at a later date.

The difference between those situations is SuRie’s a much more reliable vocalist and there’s also less expectation for the UK to send a good song, whereas Russia has a much stronger track record.
