In Lisbon SuRie declared that “storms don’t last forever”. And now it seems that the fine weather has arrived in the form of the UK singer’s new song “Taking It Over”. And like “Storm”, it’s music with a motivational message.

Unlike the classic anthem style of SuRie’s Eurovision entry “Storm”, her new song has a sultry electro-pop sound that is rooted in 2018.

The song highlights SuRie’s rich soul vocals, but it also gives her the chance to get sultry and seductive. The minimalist production of the verses lets SuRie’s voice deliver some ASMR realness, before the chorus bursts in with a bold electro-pop sound.

The lyrics of “Taking It Over” deal with a person who has decided to take a big step forward in their life with another person. It could be about a romantic relationship (“There are no rules tonight”) but it could also apply to any big moment in someone’s life.

Like “Storm”, the song has threads of motivation and determination running through it. There are also shades of the fighting spirit that saw SuRie keep calm and carry on after a stage invader threatened to spoil her performance in Lisbon. She sings, “Let me get this right/I won’t mess it up”.

There’s also a sense that SuRie is done with being a backing vocalist. She’s ready to move onto bigger things, as she sings “It’s now or never/Feels like my turn/To take it to the next step”.

SuRie announced the new single on social media, telling her fans: “The past few months have been one helluva ride and now it’s so good to get back to the piano, scribble, write, sing, create and collab with Up & Down and Xavier Boyer to bring you “Taking It Over”.”

“Taking It Over” lyrics – SuRie

It’s now or never
Feels like my turn
To take it to the next step

Won’t last forever
We just get one life
It keeps on getting better

You don’t wanna waste this

So now we’re gonna swap seats
We do it in a heartbeat
I know which way to go
So now we’re gonna swap seats
We do it in a heartbeat
I know which way to go

I’m taking it over
Let me get this right
I won’t mess it up
There are no rules tonight
I’m taking it over
Let me get this right
I won’t mess it up
There are no rules tonight

Won’t last forever
We just get one life
It keeps on getting better

You don’t wanna waste this

So now we’re gonna swap seats
We do it in a heartbeat
I know which way to go
So now we’re gonna swap seats
We do it in a heartbeat
I know which way to go

I’m taking it over
Let me get this right
I won’t mess it up
There are no rules tonight
I’m taking it over
Let me get this right
I won’t mess it up
There are no rules tonight

Rather have it my way
Rather have it my way

I made it clear for you
I see now what to do
Are you with me or not?
(Are you with me or not?)

You know what to expect
We guess what’s coming next
Are you with me or not?

I’m taking it over
Just taking it over
I’m taking it over
Just taking it over

Rather have it my way
Rather have it my way

I’m taking it over
Just taking it over
Rather have it my way

Let me get this right
I won’t mess it up
There are no rules tonight
There are no rules tonight

Let me get this right
I won’t mess it up

Allegedly, the BBC rejected this song for Eurovision at the songwriting camp. If that’s true, I’m shocked! It literally sounds like SuRie singing a cool Melodifestivalen entry! Well done SuRie on a great track.
Update: There were possibly two different songwriting camps, so this might have nothing to do with the BBC after all. I would be interested to find out the truth behind this song, however.

i wanted the uk to get null points this year, not cuz i hate surie, but cuz i wanted them to realize that their current approach to the contest sucks and should reevaluate their decisions. and i still dont get how they ended up higher than portugal and finland , which were far better.

Finland screwed the pooch with staging. All they needed to do was build a performance around Sarra and the “Monsters” from the video, and it would have been light years better than what they finally came up with.

No it wasn’t, it was written at a camp in the UK for SuRie.

Hi mad professor, she did say last night on her Instagram live that it was in the running for You Decide.

That’s strange, because a tweet from one of the song’s co-writers said it wasn’t.

The UK apparently doesn’t want to win Eurovision.
Maybe they don’t have money to host. OR UK singers don’t like Eurovision or are scared to participate.

Come on, the UK has the best music studios, the best singles, the best producers, the best singers… but at Eurovision…

I mean, I have nothing against Surie, but I’m sure if the USA was in this competition, Lady Gaga or Beyonce were there too. Just saying

But let’s see if the rumors about Robbie Williams and James are right

Lady Gaga and Beyoncè are international stars, and wouldn’t go near the contest. Most British artists are globally known, doing Eurovision would be a big risk to their career!

But I agree, it’s mainly the BBC’s fault. Helen Riddell, Guy Freeman, and Hugh Goldsmith are British Eurovision fans’ worst enemy. We need to do what France did and changed whatever they did in 2016.

Do we though? I’m not so sure.

SuRie is one of my sentimental faves this year (even before the ESC finals). Beautiful woman. Wish her all the success.

Becoming a huge SuRie fan.. Storm was amazing, how she handled the invader and her personality was already great for me but this song proves she is one to stay.. Love it!

Love it! Has some nice Honne vibes. Let’s hope the BBC at least makes some effort to support her. She deserves to do well.
