They won Festival da canção 2017 and performed for Portugal at Eurovision 2018.But at the end of combined voting, Cláudia Pascoal and Isaura were left out in the cold, and at the bottom of the leaderboard.

And newly revealed full televote results help explain why: Despite winning over the home crowd, the dynamic duo placed last in televoting in 26 countries.

Serbia, Slovenia, Spain and Finland also placed last in at least one country’s televote. Serbia was wooden-spooned seven times, Slovenia five, Spain four and Finland just once.

Moldova was the only country where Saara Aalto came last in the televote.

Who came eleventh in the televote?

If there’s a narrow spread at the bottom, there’s a broader one at the top. Seventeen countries came eleventh in at least one country’s televote.

Estonia and Norway tie for most eleventh place finishes at six apiece. Estonia appealed across Europe, coming close to points in Australia, Azerbaijan, San Marino, Serbia, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Before the contest many expected Alexander Rybak to perform well in the Nordic and Ex-Soviet nations. And Ukranian and Finnish televoters both placed him eleventh in their votes. He also took eleventh place in Czech Republic, Israel, Montenegro and Poland.

France‘s Madame Monsieur were eleventh in five nations, while Austria‘s Cesar Sampson was eleventh in a further four.

Two countries fans had expected to be high in televoting (but not high enough) were Australia and Sweden. Both placed eleventh at least once. However, neither appear to have “just missed out”. Australia only took eleventh once and Sweden twice.

Full televote 11th place results:

Australia 1 (Lithuania)
Austria 4 (Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, Portugal)
Bulgaria 2 (Armenia, Italy)
Czech Republic 1 (Georgia)
Estonia 6 (Australia, Azerbaijan, San Marino, Serbia, The Netherlands, United Kingdom)
Finland 1 (Albania)
France 5 (Greece, Moldova, Romania, Slovenia, Switzerland)
Germany 3 (Bulgaria, FYR Macedonia, France)
Hungary 1 (Russia)
Ireland 1 (Malta)
Israel 1 (Denmark)
Italy 2 (Norway, Sweden)
Lithuania 3 (Belarus, Belgium, Iceland)
The Netherlands 3 (Austria, Estonia, Germany)
Norway 6 (Czech Republic, Finland, Israel, Montenegro, Poland, Ukraine)
Sweden 2 (Latvia, Spain)
Ukraine 1 (Hungary)

What do you make of the results? Are your surprised by Portugal’s result? Or by Estonia and Norway’s eleventh place results? Let us know in the comments below!

Portugal didn’t deserve the result it got. It was probably one of the better host country entries in a while…the last time one was decent was Sweden 2013, Azerbaijan 2012, and Germany 2011. Norway, though, got what it deserved. It was a weak song. Rebecca should’ve gone to Lisbon instead.

The decision to perform again following the stage invasion should not have been left to SuRie and the UK team. The EBU should have insisted that the “judges” performance from the previous night was replayed at the end of the last entry in the Grand Final. This was the least that UK deserved and would have probably resulted in a better result from the public vote.

Now, this is very typical. Blaming Europe (in this case the EBU) for poor British judgement. How could the EBU be held responsible and force UK?…

The UK chose not to perform again, and to be honest I do not want SuRie representing my country again, her jury performance was horrific, no wonder we did so badly. The stage invasion saved us from getting last placr

the thing is that jury voting was introduced in order to correct televoting based on neighbourhoods and polítics, but if we take a look to detailed results we can see that members of juries also behave and vote according to geography and political links, so that’s not a solution for having final results attached exclusively to music. but I guess that’s the history of the eurovision song contest…

Politics rule. Despite the fact that Israel won, they received no votes from countries that they have poor relations with like Iceland and Ireland. At least the phone in votes were fair. Long live Israel.

not true! Iceland gave Israel 8 jury point (3rd place) plus 7 from televote. Ireland gave Israel 7 jury point (4th place) plus 6 from televote. and, Israel don’t have poor relations with those countries.

You be honest Eurovision is a complete and utter fast now it’s a real com. Too much politics. Then contest is one part, AND the voting is completely different. It’s about time UP pulled OUT NOW. Definatly once We are OUT of Europe then we should NOT pay nothing towards its anymore and finish the contest.because even we do enter a decent song, WE WILL NEVER WIN…….. too many block voting.

Well my dear, whether you like it or not UK is part of Europe. That will never change. If you choose to not participate in our institutions and cultural manifestations, in other words being a pariah, that is entirely up to you. Just remember that maybe with a more positive atitude and without moking us all the time you could have sent much better songs and have better results.

Juries aren’t there to save anyone, they are there to judge! And why would they vote on something in the same vein as last year’s winner? With a weak performance to that? Last year was a bold choice, what was so bold about this?
You don’t win votes by repeating last year, you win votes by being original and standing out!

Also, Serbia should have been lower in televoting if it hadn’t been for diaspora and Balkan countries. The general public didn’t like it at all and preferred Australia (no last place in televoting)/

Portugal had a lovely staging nothing needed to be changed. The problem was that the song itself is more for radio and not a TV competition.

I was shocked to see juries ignoring this, so weird voting for Israel and Australia while ignoring Portugal.

I think “O Jardim” was pure magic, the staging was perfect for the song and it truly touched me everytime I hear it. I’m disappointed it did so poorly but whenever my fave song fails to do well I always go back to my hipster roots and just say, “this song is too good for people to get.”

There was a break between Portugal and UK and I think the moment SuRie has started, Portugal was already forgotten by majority of the voters. I think something like Salvador had in the background, jardim means garden after all, would help it stand out.

I think the result shows us that Portugal winning last year was an one-of-its-kind victory and we might wait another 60 years for their next victory. Oh, and just take a look at the Swiss results which are usually heavily influenced by their immigrants. This time, 12 Points went to Serbia but at least a few to Germany and Italy as well, which wasn’T usual for Switzerland some years ago I think.

Firstly it was not 60 years that Portugal had to wait. It was 53. So if you want to do this kind of derogatory statements, then at least inform yourself first. Secondly, you cannot jump into conclusions about the next 60 years (when maybe you will not be around anyway) from one bad particpation. Last year Germany came last, this year it came 4th… to give but one example. RTP very succesfully changed the perception and interest on the ESC. So maybe there are good things to look forward to. And thridly, you cannot change history. The fact remains that… Read more »

I must wade in and defend Christian, he simply said that it might be a long time before a country wins again in the contest. We think the same here in the UK. We’ve not won for 21 years and it might be another 21 at this rate. Also, didn’t Sobral himself say “nothing has changed since I won.”?

That can be said about any country and not only about Portugal and above all has nothing to do with Cláudia and Isaura. About Salvador… Isn’t he right? Poor Portugal. They should’ve done more with the staging to create the ‘garden feeling’ of the song since having the song in Portuguese would make it difficult to translate to viewers. Forget about Salvador’s motto of “Music is about feelings not fireworks”. His song was just on a different league from everyone else. It was well composed lyrically AND musically(they had a real orchestra during recording!).

In 2016 they got 72 televote points from other Yugoslav countries, and 4+4 from Italy and Austria which have relevant Serbian immigrant communities. Basically would’ve been 0 without neighbors.

We the public believe the entire Eurovision contest is “fixed” right from the start. It has fallen into decay. When the contest first began, it was just the particular county’s singer (with no extras-dancers, fire, special effects, etc) singing in his/her native language. Voting wasn’t fixed. Now it is. Scandinavian countries vote for their neighbors even though the song is terrible; Balkan countries do the same, et., etc. Where is the fairness in this contest. Since the judging aspect can’t be made better, why don’t the sponsors just broadcast it as an entertainment program instead of a contest?

Never talk what the publilc believes. It is not true either. Yes, neighbours often vote for eachother because theis musical taste might be more comparable. And the voting between Greece and Cyprus is just palin silly, which does not happen between other countries. So if the voting was really fixed, we would have the same winners and losers every year§ There is an enormous variations of winners, from hte north to the south, from the west to the east, so actually what you’re saying is rubbish, Please speak for yourself!

Spain and Portugal don’t vote for each other. Some points sure, but not 12 points are guareented, so this comment makes zero sense. This year Spain got 12 points because there were tons of Spanish people attending the Eurovision in Portugal and they voted for themselves. I am happy for them, their song was way better then others that got more points, they were very unlucky to get 2nd in running order.

I didn t understand huge oscillation in voting from many jury members in semi final and final. Example , voting from Mariette singer from Sweden. In second semi final she put on 8 place The Netherlands , on 9 place she put Serbia and on 10 place Ukraine. In final she put The Netherlands on 20 place , she put Serbia on 24 place and she put Ukraine on 11 place in final. Did The Netheralands and Serbia sang so bad in juries final and Ukraine sang amazing in juries final.

Maybe she like more songs from I semi in grand final, but how in final she put Ukraine in 11 place ( she put Ukraine 10 in semi) and she put The Netheralands and Serbia in II semi on 8,9 place but in final far away from Ukraine, she put The Netherlands on 20 place and Serbia on 24 of 26 countries in final , and both coountries was better in her ranking than Ukraine in II semi final.

We need new system of voting similar like voting in Eurovision 1971 to 1973 . It is not fair, that county who wili finished 11 th place in all 42 countries with juries and televote , will get 0 points in total, and maybe some countries will be last in 40 with teleovete and juries, and be in first place in 2 neihgoburs countries with televote and juries and that countries wili get 48 points in total.

I was in the jury final and unfortunately noticed that the girls from Portugal were out of tune. Isaura finished her lines after Claudia and that was a real shame because like you said they needed the juries to avoid a bad result. The televote rarely go for a song in the same style as the previous year winner and does not like to reward the host country lately. At least is not the dreaded nil points and the same score last year would have been enough to be out of bottom 3.

My incompetent and doubtfully honest Romanian judges unanimously voted in the semi final for Moldova in an old-fashioned politically biased manner: Moldova was everybody’s favorite, although we all know that no. 2 or no. 3 was their real favorite, but they naively felt as usual that by giving Moldova 12 points they could make Romania great again (mind you, geographically great). Still, in the final, instead of the typical 1-1-1-1-1 landslide, the vote sheet for Moldova looked something like 6-15-5-9-1. What happened? Did they feel a great disturbance in the political force? And don’t tell me that I’m dumb, I… Read more »

Anyway, that was one of the first things I noticed from the jury vote this year. They changed a lot from the semi-finals to the final. Is it random? I don’t know, but it’s unusual.
The Cypriot jury is particularly a case to be studied.

I think the Portugese song was beautiful but it just didn’t translate well on stage. There was nothing particularly interesting and captivating about it. Salvador’s performance was in fact completely different – he performed all alone on small stage and I think that it really had impact.

Portugal had a great song. I don’t think it flopped because it was too risky, but due to bad staging. I know they wanted to keep it loyal to Salvador’s words, but it was just too dull.
Isaura’s introduction was done in a very anticlimatic way, you could even notice that she waited for Claudia to take the lead at singing. What people at home would think of it…what the hell was that woman doing on the stage?!
