At Eurovision 2006, she gave Croatia a 12th-place finish with the Dalmatian-inspired “Moja Stikla”.
Now, over a decade later, the Balkan Queen of Pop Severina has released the edgy and urban track “Tutorial”.
Sit down, grab some paper and get ready to learn: The Split-born beauty is ready to show y’all how it’s done.
After starting her year with the emotional ballad “Unaprijed Gotovo”, Severina swerves in a new direction. “Tutorial” has an edgy, urban sound. The mid-tempo electro beats are at once deep and pulsating, but also light…and lightly tropical.
The contemporary track features child singer Ljuba Stankovic, who rose to fame as a finalist on the reality show Pinkove Zvezdice. The song is co-written by Jala Brat — the rapper who, along with Dalal, Deen and Ana Rucner, represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at Eurovision 2016. Jala previously featured in “Otrove” — a song he wrote for Severina and which she released earlier this year.
In the music video, we see Severina in a fencing uniform posing with a sabre. As much of a fashion chameleon as she is a versatile singer, she later appears in an evening gown sipping a cocktail while metal-clad dancers perform in the background.
Stankovic’s gentle voice has a unique timbre. It provides a bit of contrast towards the end of the song, adding a haunting vibe that works so well paired against Severina’s adult sound. It’s the first time Severina has collaborated with a youngster.
Talking about her collaboration, Severina says: “When Jala Brat sent me the song, in one part of it he pouted his voice and sounded like a child. Then I remembered Ljuba Stankovic, the miracle of the child and the future big star.”
“A beautiful and talented child, full of emotion and joy, which I noticed at first. I thank him and his parents for allowing me to bring ‘Tutorial’ together with him.”
Severina at Eurovision
Severina placed 12th at Eurovision 2006 with the song “Moja Stikla” — a far more traditional number.
As her career has moved from strength to strength, Eurovision fans have repeatedly called on her to return to Eurovision. With Croatia failing to make the Eurovision final in Lisbon, it’s perhaps more conceivable that Severina might consider giving the contest a go. We’d all be served well if she did!
