They won Eurovision. She’s won a Grammy, Emmy, Academy Award and three Golden Globes. And now Cher has announced she’s recorded an album of ABBA classics.
The news follows the Goddess of Pop’s appearance as Ruby Sheridan in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again.
The sequel to the 2008 ABBA jukebox musical Mamma Mia tells the story of how Donna Sheridan met her daughter Sophie’s three potential Fathers.
Cher announced the news in an interview with the NBC Today Show (which will host Eurovision 2018 winner Netta on Tuesday). Explaining her decision, the star said she thought it would be “fun” and was inspired by recording the Eurovision 1974 winners’ hit “Fernando”.
Cher’s album may not be as conventional as her cover of “Fernando”, however. Teasing her take on the Swedish group’s tracks, Cher said: “It’s not what you think of when you think Abba, because I did it in a different way.”
There’s no other details about the project at this stage. As well as “Fernando”, the star also recorded her take on “Super Trouper”.
The “Believe” hitmaker stars in the film alongside a cast of A-listers including Colin Firth, Piers Brosnan, Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Julie Walters, Lily James and Andy Garcia.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again features 18 ABBA songs, including the group’s 1974 Eurovision winner “Waterloo”. Sadly the song isn’t performed on stage at Eurovision in Brighton. Instead young Donna, played by Lily James, performs it with young Harry, played by Hugh Skinner, in a Napoleon themed restaurant in Paris.
In a quirk of fate, this won’t be the first connection between Cher and Eurovision.
Way back when she was starting out a musician, Cher scored a Top 10 hit with “The Way Of Love” in 1972, which went on to sell almost a million copies
The original French version of the song was written for Frédérica, who took part in the French national final in 1960.
