She’s the transgender trailblazer who cut a path for herself and for greater recognition of the LGBT community. And on Monday 1998 Eurovision winner Dana International showed support for LGBT causes by releasing a new version of the song “Mi Ha’Ish” (Who is the man). It comes amid ongoing tensions over the government’s flip-flop in legislation over gay surrogacy.

The music video starts with a beautiful choir singing and Dana standing in front of the Ra’anana symphonic orchestra. Wearing a white dress with a deeply plunging neckline, she embodies class and elegance — suggesting the seriousness of her message.  The video shows us glimpses of people’s lives — from gay men with their children to a father comforting his son to guys holding hands on the street. We see pain, secret hopes and people forced to hide their true selves from other people — all wrapped up in touching black-and-white cinematography.

The powerful lyrics are taken from the Bible (and more specifically the Tehillim, or Book of Psalms).

”Who is the man who wants life, who loves the days to see the good in them. Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from false assumptions. Stay away from the bad, ask for peace and pursue it.”

It is important to remember that there is always hope. And Dana International reminds us of that as the video progresses. Halfway through it changes from black-and-white to full-on colour, and people in the video tell the world who they are — and with pride. This is all about standing together as a united nation and ending discrimination.

Apparently these are values Microsoft is keen to promote, too: They sponsored the video.

Earlier this month, Dana showed her support for the LGBT community after the government refused to extend surrogacy rights to gay parents — a blatant double-standard in the law.

In a pointed Facebook post Dana shared a video with the caption: “Now it’s our turn to say no.”

“Have 8, have 9, have 10 children…Unless you are two men — and the state doesn’t let you do it. From today, we all join the struggle for equality.”

Very cleverly filmed, and the music is hauntingly beautiful. Dana International 20 years on from winning ESC; she’s still just as powerful today, incredible.

As for the wider rights issues, I hope that these will be sorted by the end of my lifetime. So far it has been interesting watching laws twist and turn, but disappointing that attitudes towards LGBT people have been slow to change (especially for those making law).
