More than three years since they brought British electro-swing to Vienna, Electro Velvet have finally released their follow-up single, “Take Me Home”. The song is a celebration of two people leaving bad relationships and is a natural successor to the duo’s 2015 Eurovision entry.

Back in 2015, Electro Velvet surprised Eurovision fans when the BBC announced that their song “Still in Love with You” would be the UK’s act for Eurovision 2015. While the electro-swing song did have some supporters, many felt it wasn’t up to the standards expected for a British Eurovision entry. It placed 24th in the grand final with just five points.

The last time we heard from Electro Velvet was back in 2015, when they cancelled the crowdfunding campaign they were running to fund future recordings. Alex Larke kept busy with solo recordings, while Bianca Nicholas took some time out after the whirlwind of Eurovision.

But now the dynamic duo has returned to the studio and “Take Me Home” keeps the electro-swing spirit alive, though perhaps with less electro and more swing. The song continues the “his and hers” vocal style of “Still in Love with You”, and uses a compressed vocal effect to evoke the sound of a vintage swing record.

And no — that’s not Alex and Bianca on the cover art. They have used a couple of dancers to depict the Electro Velvet energy. And also possibly because Alex now has more of a shaggy-haired surfer dude look than the slick dandy style of 2015.

In the song, the two singers both rejoice in having left bad relationships. They sing, “Now he’s gone, my life is better than ever”. There’s also a hint at something darker, when they mention there’s now “No one telling me where I’ll be going / No one telling me what I can do”.

Having each left a bad relationship, the two have found each other and are realising that they may have found someone they’d be much happier with.

The song also features Lone Sharx, the producer who remixed “Still in Love with You”. Bianca’s iconic Eurovision line “Sounding good, sugar” also makes an appearance in the song.

Electro Velvet revealed news of the song’s release to fans on Twitter. They gave a release date of 28 August, but the song is already available on Spotify.

The tweet also included the hashtag #eurovision2019. This led some to wonder if the song had been selected as the UK’s entry for Israel. But as others have noted, releasing the song before the 1 September deadline means it’s ineligible as an entry for Eurovision 2018.

Electro Velvet – “Take Me Home”

“Take Me Home” lyrics – Electro Velvet

Don’t forget your bags now, honey!

And don’t forget the dog now, honey!

Well, I’ve been celebrating for a week or more
Ever since I got the news I’ve been waiting for
I guess I’d better leave while I can find the door
Will anybody take me home?

If I’m a little tipsy then I must confess
I’ve had a drop of whisky and I need a rest
The thing I can’t remember now is my address
So ??? take me home

Now he’s gone my life is better than ever
Why did it have to take so long?
I don’t need somebody else to be happy
And we never seem to get along

Since he’s gone I feel like dancing the tango
Feel like partying all night through
No one telling me where I’ll be going
No one telling me what I can do

So we’ve been celebrating for a little too long
Maybe just a little cabernet and one more song
And then I’d better leave before it all goes wrong
Will anybody take me home?

And don’t forget the cat now, honey!

After all those years of helpless indecision
I’ve at least found a way of escaping from her prison
I seems that I was blind, I had 20/20 vision
I can see the way to take me home

Now he’s gone my life is better than ever
Why did it have to take so long?
I don’t need somebody else to be happy
And we never seem to get along

Since he’s gone I feel like dancing the tango
Feel like partying all night through
No one telling me where I’ll be going
No one telling me what I can do

Take
Take me
Take me home

Sounding good, sugar!

It’s been really good to meet, I can guarantee
We have a lot in common from what I can see
I thought you might consider spending time with me
Will anybody take me home?

Will anybody take you home?
Will anybody take us home?

(You got it)

Even if they don’t have any fans (which is rubbish because there are lots of people out there who loved Still In Love With You!!), why shouldn’t they carry on doing it if they enjoy it?

Electro Velvet are definitely the most underrated Eurovision entry of all time – it’s fun, different and a toe-tapper! I really don’t get all the hate and I commend them for carrying on and making music because they love it. The new single is fun too and been in my head all day – good job!!

Well the song is called “Take Me Home” so maybe they used #eurovision2019 as a way of saying “The UK should try to win next year. Let’s take the contest home and host in 2020!”

Their music sounds so cartoonish. They should boost their career similar to Serhat so they’ll go up the charts. I imagine them collaborating with AronChupa because their music styles sounds similar and I hope they will soon.

Don’t panic! This one is ineligible (due to the release date). 🙂
A related question: Have the BBC appointed an HoD yet?

Think it is Helen Riddell, who was in charge this year, and was co-Hod before that.

It’s great if Helen has taken it on. But, I was told she had turned it down. Hence, my question. Thanks.

Or, they sent/are working another song to You Decide instead? That’s also possible.

It’s a little better than their Eurovision entry, but I heavily doubt that the world has actually been waiting for this.
