Magdalena Tul Va Banque

What’s this? “Va Banque”, the latest single from Poland’s 2011 singer Magdalena Tul.

When did it drop? Last Friday, 31 August.

Tell us more: Taken from her upcoming LP Mindfulness, “Va Banque” is a mid-tempo R&B track. Magdalena sings in Polish over a series of relaxed electro beats. Like “Jestem” – the song she took to Eurovision – Magdalena channels fierce femininity once again. Although, this time the mood is more chilled out.

Speaking to the Polish website Onet Muzyka, Magdalena explains the message behind the song.

“Va Banque” means everything or nothing, now or never. It was supposed to be an ordinary song, but I quickly realized that the road to change, change in me started with her. When we were working on the video, the reality began to change itself. From day to day, I began to understand more and more the real meaning hidden in “Va Banque”.

I’ve had a fascinating journey into myself. It is as if my subconscious already knew what to communicate, although I myself was not aware of it and ready for it. That is why this song has a special meaning for me. It’s a new beginning, a new road and new goals. Now, more than ever, I am aware of inner strength, I get the satisfaction of learning about myself and developing what decides who I am tomorrow. I dream that what will remain in your mind is: ‘I can do it, I am worth it / with every ending is the beginning of something new ‘.

Accept and love the man who lives in you, and then you will accept and love others. Make your dreams come true, and open up to others and help them make their dreams come true. Are you ready!

And the music video? The official clip furthers the feminist narrative set out by the single. It features several inspirational women, including kick-boxing champion Agnieszkę Rylik and double European champion in drifting Karolinę Pilarczyk. Spoken monologues from the women are interspersed throughout the video.

Speaking to Onet again, Magdalena elaborates:

I am extremely grateful to all those who created with me this music and image, who put their heart into this project and left a part of themselves. Thank you to my heroines for sharing your fears and how to deal with them. For trusting us, without seeing the result. This time spent with you and drawing inspiration was priceless. I believe that by giving this image to viewers, they will experience similar experiences in their lives, because it only gives meaning to creation. They are people !!! The rest in God’s hands. “

Magdalena Tull at Eurovision: Magdalena’s stint at Eurovision 2011 capped off a fairly torrid run of results for Poland at the contest. Of the previous six editions, they’d only qualified for the final once. The bout of poor luck continued in Dusseldorf when Magdalena’s entry “Jestem” finished last in its semi with just 18 points. Poland withdrew the following year. They returned in 2014 and embarked on a four-year qualification streak.

What has she been up to since? After 2011 Magdalena continued to release new music with her most recent album Brave landing in 2014. Her Eurovision experience didn’t keep her away from further competitions either. In 2013 she competed in The Voice of Poland before submitting an entry to the Swiss selection later in the year. In 2017, she returned to the contest once more, this time as a member of Poland’s professional jury.
