What’s this? “Rainbow”, the latest single from Poland’s Eurovision 2016 crooner Michał Szpak. It’s taken from his upcoming album Dreamer which will be available from Friday.
When did it drop? On Monday, 3 September.
Tell us more: “Rainbow” is a sweet change of pace for Michał. He still has his trademark slurred enunciation, but instead of a grandiose rock ballad, as we’ve come to expect from him, he opts for a simple piano accompaniment.
The simplicity suits him. Rather than whack one between the eardrums like “Color Of Your Life”, the song slowly but surely worms its way into the listener’s consciousness. “Rainbow in your eyes, we are all colours in one”, he sings, “What a beautiful day, what a beautiful day / You’re a rainbow, the sun after rain”. Even the most stubborn of individuals will struggle not to feel something.
Interestingly, the track clocks in at 2:44 and was published after 1 September. Cue Eurovision comeback rumours in three, two, one…
And the music video? So far, we just have a basic lyrics video in which a berobed Michał stands before an overhead microphone in a peach-hued room. Will we get an official music video? Perhaps, although colour scheme and camera angles aside, this is virtually identical to the music video for his last single “King Of The Season”. Speaking of which…

“King Of The Season”: Arriving at the end of May, this single is more like the Michał we’re used to, complete with an electric guitar and raspier vocal tone. The mood here is dark and dour (even though the video’s colour scheme is aqua blue). “No one can save us / Who else will give us another chance? / It’s so sad to live too fast / Without love, without trust / No one can save us”. There’s definitely no peachy optimism here.

Michał Szpak at Eurovision: Michał’s journey began amidst a storm of fan outrage when he beat hot favourite Margaret in the Polish national final for Eurovision 2016. Yet despite defeating the behemoth that was “Cool Me Down”, expectations were low for “Color Of Your Life” in Stockholm. However, Michał defied the odds once more. While he crashed with the juries, he came third in the televote, ensuring a top ten finish and Poland’s third best Eurovision result ever.
What has he been up to since? Already a rising star in Poland before the contest, Michał’s career has continued to ascend after Stockholm. He’s given us multiple well received singles including “Rosanna” and “Tic Tac Clock”. This time last year, he fuelled rumours of a Eurovision comeback with the release of the sub-three-minute “Don’t Poison Your Heart”. Outside the recording studio, he’s also a coach on The Voice of Poland.
