Fresh from her whirlwind summer tour of the United Kingdom with ’90s dance-pop group Steps, Finland’s Saara Aalto has thrown her support behind a push to get them to Eurovision — and says she might even join them!
Speaking to Express UK, this year’s Finnish representative for Eurovision reflected on her recent stadium tour with the group:
“I was touring with Steps in June in the UK on their Stadium Tour and it was so great. I know people really want them to do Eurovision for the UK – I’m like, ‘hmm, maybe I should join them!’”
Steps, who had two UK number-one albums in the late ’90s and early ’00s, recently reunited for a new album and stadium tour of the UK. Saara recently told wiwiblogger William that Steps were incredibly supportive of the singer, had been watching her opening act and know all her songs.
With a mutual love between the Finnish superstar and the supergroup, no doubt a Steps + Saara fusion would set pop pulses racing across Europe — and could perhaps finally rejuvenate the UK’s lacklustre results of the last two decades.
Sadly for Saara and fans, however, Steps have recently shot down any suggestions of entering for the UK, telling morning show Lorraine that entering the contest could ruin their legacy, given UK’s poor track record at the contest.
And while it may be true that in recent years the UK have not finished too highly on the Eurovision scoreboard, fellow ’90s pop group Blue sang “I Can” and did just so — finishing a very respectable 11th at Eurovision in 2011 in Dusseldorf.
Despite Steps’ recent shutdown, Saara has reason to celebrate — recently announcing a Europe-wide tour of her album Wild Wild Wonderland. Kicking off in October, she’ll be making her way through the UK, Ireland, Spain and Scandinavia, with tickets still available on her website.
And seeing that Saara has turned it up another level in her recent performances, fans should be in for a treat. Her performance earlier this week for the Finnish children’s charity event Elämä Lapselle 2018 showcased a new, slowed-down emotional rendition of her Eurovision song “Monsters”, before breaking into a colourful poptastic version of new single “Wild Wild Wonderland”, with dancers dressed all in colours of the rainbow.

The amount of hate towards Saara Aalto from a particular social media website is a bit overwhelming. Never knew people are like that to her because I know a lot of fans were really supportive of her a few months ago. They hate her now because of her result? Smh

I think Saara is very talented and i loved her recent performance in the charity event. It’s great to see her touring and I wish she could find radio success in the UK. She should try doing Eurovision in the next 5 years but with a slower song that showcases her voice. Monsters (piano version) is absolutely breathtaking.

Despite being half british by marriage, I really don’t care if Britain withdraws for a while. They have to get their act toghether internationally. They don’t consider themselves EUrope anymore… Fine. Just let them experience how good one is if one is the only contestant and how much fun that is! UK needs to grow up and experience the 21st century!!!
Blame the BBC, not the UK! As someone from the UK, I’m not responsible for the acts we choose. Blame the BBC delegation, they’re the ones that choose our act.
Also, why put politics into the comment. Eurovision is about music and politics shouldn’t get in the way of that

Steps are a laughing stock here already so in most Brits’ minds they’d be perfect for Eurovizh.
Exactly. Ruin their legacy? Their last album with the exception of a couple of songs did that already. Claire carries Steps now. She could do it solo.
