Cezar Ouatu served bejewelled vampire realness for Romania at Eurovision 2013 in Malmö. Several months later, Gaia Cauchi secured Malta’s first Junior Eurovision win. And on Saturday night the two singers faced the judges and audience as the final weekend of X Factor UK auditions reaches its conclusion.
Sporting a cowboy hat and leather jacket, Cezar explained he was born in Romania but grew up in Italy.
“It was a long journey for me but I’m really, really happy to be here tonight. For me it’s a great moment because this is one of my biggest dreams today…” — before Simon Cowell cheekily replied “…to meet me?”.
His countertenor rendition of “Nessun Dorma” impressed the judges, who gave Cezar a standing ovation.
Later in the show, Gaia Cauchi — 15 at the time of filming — arrived on stage with her mum and dad watching on backstage with host Dermot O’Leary.
“I wanted to apply when I was younger but I think now is the right time,” she explained to the judges. She tackled the Paloma Faith single “Only Love Can Hurt Like This”, but unfortunately her audition was cut short by Robbie Williams.
“You’re incredibly charismatic and I think you have The X Factor but I think your age is a concern”, he said before suggesting Gaia should have a go at being in a group. Although there’s no mention on whether Gaia joined a group during the show, the judges gave her four yeses.
