The X Factor Malta is only heading into its third week, but details have now been confirmed of the show’s grand final. It’s been locked in for Saturday 26 January. As well as that, three other live shows will be held in the preceding weeks.

The shows will be held at the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre (MFCC). The centre has been used as the venue for the Malta Eurovision Song Contest in the past two years, further cementing the role of the X Factor as Malta’s national final.

The MFCC was also the location of the X Factor‘s Six Chair Challenge, which was filmed earlier this month.

Prior to the grand final, weekly live shows will be held on Sundays, on January 6, 13 and 20. However, it’s not known what format these live shows will take and how any acts will be eliminated from each show.

In the traditional X Factor show format, one contestant is eliminated each week, making around ten live shows. However, in recent years, changes have been made in some productions.

In the last series of The X Factor Australia, only five live shows were held, with four acts eliminated in the first week. It is possible that Malta will use a similar format with just four live shows, in order to create a speedier and more economical production.

Unlike other countries’ productions of the X Factor, Malta is charging admission for audience members wishing to watch the shows. Tickets for the first three live shows are €20 each, or a package of all three shows for €50. Tickets for those three live shows are currently on sale, while tickets for the grand final are expecting to go on sale soon.

But other than the date, little is known about the X Factor Malta‘s grand final. Broadcaster TVM has not confirmed how many acts will be battling out in the grand final. We also don’t know if the finalists will perform their potential entry for Eurovision 2019, or if the winner will have a song internally selected at a later date.

Judges auditions for X Factor Malta kicked off earlier this month. Already viewers have seen successful auditions from former MESC stars Danica Muscat, Aidan CassarChris Grech, Dario Mifsud Bonnici and Lyndsey Pace.

In the last week, we’ve also seen successful auditions from Chelsea Sciortino, Diana Formosa, Kayley Cuschieri, Maria Camilleri and Kurt Anthony, who represented Malta in the New Wave singing contest last year.

X Factor Malta judges’ auditions will continue tomorrow.

No sing offs then?? just 100% public votes but with judges critiques and mentoring. Well..it is a national selection show after all. The ‘X Factor’ is just a concept being used to select the ESC entrant.

Based on what I’ve read off of Wikipedia, it looks like Malta’s live shows could resemble those of the Romanian version (which have run only three weeks for the last couple of years instead of four). On the Romanian version, there are only 8 or 9 acts in the live shows to start with. Each week of live shows usually consists of two rounds. The acts perform in the first round, they take the viewer vote (which could be easily done in Malta as well due to its small size), then they have an elimination (usually the act with the… Read more »

Now, here’s the thing: if the final is all new songs, that gets me worried that it’s just gonna be MESC again and the only differences are that they’re not calling it that and that we see how they decided who’s competing. Internally selecting a song has worked recently (including for Ira) so that could be the way to go.

Unfortunately both X Factor Malta and Operation Triumfo will give ESC singers for Malta 2019 and Spain 2019. ESC becoming reality show.

Operacion Triunfo was used as Spain’s national selection in the early 2000’s.

Basically, every national final for ESC is a reality show, without being based on a popular international format.

Operacion Triunfo had been used as Spain’s national selection in the early 2000’s so that was hardly surprising.

If you think about it, the very fact that ESC is a televised competition program makes it a reality show.
