Germany hasn’t revealed the six to eight artists who have made its Eurovision 2019 national final. But among the Top 20, we now know even more acts who definitely haven’t advanced. First, Sebastian Schub withdrew because of other commitments. Then Nina Kutschera and Dima Rompos said they aren’t among the finalists. And now two more acts — Daniel Schuhmacher and Thilo Berndt — have confirmed NDR gave them the axe.

Daniel Schuhmacher

Daniel Schuhmacher has already had a respectable career. He’s released several albums and won the sixth season of German Idol back in 2009. The German singer attracted attention due to his wide-ranging musical tastes, and ability to thrive in different genres.

But he’s now stated on his Facebook page that he isn’t one of the finalists to compete to represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Ich wollte eigentlich damit warten, bis die Künstler für das #songwritingcamp #esc öffentlich sind. Dadurch, dass ich…

“Actually, I wanted to wait until the finalists are certain. But as I got so many great and motivating messages from you, I want to answer your question now. Sadly, it wasn’t enough to be among the finalists. I often said that it would be a dream coming true but it obviously should not be… It was fun anyway.”

However, Daniel hasn’t lost his humour as he also stated he’ll get passports from all European countries to apply again (which obviously isn’t a serious statement, though it does suggest his serious commitment to his dream). The German singer surely would have breathed some fresh air into the national final with his electro pop music.

Thilo Berndt

Thilo Berndt won’t be in the final either. He’s currently studying at a pop music academy and has succeeded in many songwriting competitions. But unfortunately the Eurovision Panel and the professional jury did not vote him through to the final.

“I got a call from NDR a few days ago and I’m not among the finalists,” he wrote on Facebook. “Surprisingly, I am not as disappointed I thought I’d be. I surely dreamed about increasing my range as a musician with the national final… I am happy that I came into the Top 20 without applying myself… Everything happens for a reason!”

The student also said he is happy with the system. The Eurovision Panel and the professional jury evaluate exactly what suits the ESC 2019 format. In addition, he rather lose such a competition but remain himself.

What happens next?

In the coming weeks we will learn what other artists failed to pass through to the German national final. As planned, German broadcaster NDR wants to reveal the six to eight finalists this month.

I think many German singers hesitate because of Germanys overall results in the last couple of years.

The songwriting camp will start tomorow in Berlin with six participants of the 15 workshop artists. The names will be reavealed in the upcoming week. But NDR still works with other artists. They were not at the workshop and they take not part at the songwriting camp. The panel and the jury will have to decide if one or two of them will make it to the final as well.

Where is Madeline Juno? Had she started off with “Error” at Unser Song 2014, she might have been the one singing in Copenhagen.

I think we will see Gregor Hägele, BB Thomaz, Aly Ryan and Nicole Cross for sure. For the rest, I’m still undecided + the NDR has artists that didn’t attend the workshop who are still in the race

Cool, so there’s still hope Germany sends something decent.
