It may still be the Eurovision off-season, however, the fan contests are keeping us amused, with the next one being the 2018 OGAE Video Contest hosted by the Belgian branch of the ESC fan network.

The OGAE Video Contest is a competition held annually since 2003 between the numerous OGAE branches around Europe. The contest aims to highlight the visual aspects of songs, namely their music videos, as well as promote national music and diversity.

The competition is open to both former Eurovision acts as well as civilian pop stars. Previous winners have included Myléne Farmer, Stromae, Via Gra, Coldplay and LOBODA.

There are strict criteria in order for a song to be eligible to compete in the contest:

  • The song must be original
  • The song can’t have been released more than 24 months ago
  • The artist must have some connection to the country they are representing
  • The song must have an official video clip
  • The song can’t have competed at Eurovision, national finals or in any other OGAE contest

Last year, Belgium fought their way to victory with Loïc Nottet’s “Mud Blood”, amassing a total of 184 points. As a result the 2018 edition of the contest will be organised by the Belgian OGAE community.

This year there will be 24 countries taking part, with some familiar faces from the Eurovision bubble. This includes recent Eurovision stars Mikolas Josef, Iveta Mukuchyan and the Sunstroke Project, as well as names from past years like Sara Jo (Moje 3), Severina and Philipp Kirkorov.

Each OGAE branch was responsible for selecting their own entry and the running order was determined by a draw.

1. Czech Republic Mikolas Josef “Me Gusta”
2. Poland Kasia Moś (ft. Norma John) “Wild Eyes”
3. Belgium Oscar and the Wolf “Runaway”
4. FYR Macedonia Bobi Andonov “Apartment”
5. France Christophe Willem “Marlon Brando”

You’ve got a typo in Greece’s singer – it should be “Melina Makri” instead of “Melani”

Her song “Thirio” is probably my favourite out of all candidates 🙂
