She’s become a staple of the Eurovision community since representing the UK back in 2000. And with new music on the horizon, Nicki French has proven her everlasting appeal with the upcoming release of her album, Glitter to the Neon Lights.
The 12-track album includes eight original songs written by the likes of Charlie Mason, Peter Wilson, Michael Jay and Gordon Pogoda, and four classic tracks, updated and remade into Nicki’s unique sound.
The album disproves the age-old adage that all that glitters is not gold. Au contraire, darling Nikki! Glitter to the Neon Lights is a pop-extravaganza full of high-energy and synth-driven pop beats.
Its unique pop-diva sound is outshone only by Nicki’s self-efficacy and sense of humour. The music video for delicious disco track “On Your Marks, Get Set, Go Away” ends with a dry quip from a studio engineer, “I’ve heard better, to be honest”, prompting raucous laughter from Nicki. This disco diva is so down to earth, we love her all the more for it!
Speaking to wiwibloggs, Nicki tells us that her latest album has been a labour of love 18 months in the making:
“I started recording tracks for Glitter to the Neon Lights around 18 months ago, but the prospect of a Christmas song came along, which turned into a Christmas album (A Very Nicki Christmas), and Glitter… had to take a backseat. However, we are there now, and I am so proud of this album. I feel blessed that I was sent some great songs by amazing writers to choose from, and I hope you’ll approve of my choices.”
And we give our disco-dancing tick of approval — especially with the strong Eurovision pedigree attached. Three tracks were written by Charlie Mason, co-writer of 2014 Eurovision-winning song “Rise Like a Phoenix”.
And you definitely get Charlie’s classic Conchita-esque sound through the album, delivered effortlessly by Nicki. “Steal the Crown” does just that, with Nicki proving she’s still the disco diva we deserve and we need. ‘Teardrops (On the Disco Floor)’ is an instant Eurovision-cruise staple, serving fierceness and fabulosity.
The album marks a familiar return for Nicki, whose career rocketed in 1995 when her dance version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” stormed the global charts, resulting in a No.2 track both sides of the Atlantic. After two hit albums and numerous single releases, she represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision in 2000 with “Don’t Play That Song Again”, where she placed 16th.
“Glitter to the Neon Lights” is released November 19. As a parting note, Nicki thanks her fans for their support, telling us “none of this would have even been possible without them!”
I met her at the London Party in 2014 and told her how much I enjoyed “Did You Ever Really Love Me”. She told me “bless your heart for that, dear”, which I enjoyed.
Nicki is lovely but fan favourites do not always make the best Eurovision entries – Don’t Play That Song Again was a low point.
