He’s had a whirlwind few months, getting married, having a baby, placing in the Top 5 at Eurovision and releasing a new single. And on Friday Michael Schulte continued to notch up personal firsts, this time by winning the prestigious “Bambi” Award for “new German music star”. Yes, the people’s choice award is his. Congratulations!

The “Bambi” is the country’s most important media award and this year marked the 70th anniversary of the show. The awards ceremony took place in Berlin’s Theater am Potsdamer Platz. Among the other winners were Dua Lipa (top star) and Penelope Cruz (top international actress).

Michael shared the good news on Instagram, uploading a photo with the legendary Udo Lindenberg.

Writing in the Instagram caption, the “You Let Me Walk Alone” singer said:

“Madness!! We have the Bambi!! Many thanks to all who have coordinated so diligently! A great honour to receive this award from you, dear Udo! Many thanks for your words — I really appreciate that!”

Performing at Eurovision can turn singers into treasured national icons. Just look at Lena and Nicole. Michael is yet another example.

Bambi ain’t no deer. It’s a benchmark for success and popularity in Germany, a platform for people and topics that make the country special. Bambi highlights the things that are important in and for Germany, and the things that – from a German perspective – are important for the world as a whole.

This year, the Bambi awards for went to pop star Mark Forster and British singer Dua Lipa as well. Grammy winner Alessia Cara and two-time Bambi winner Udo Lindenberg performed at the ceremony, while Swiss actress Liselotte Pulver, Italy’s Sophia Loren, and Spain’s Penélope Cruz attended award ceremony.
