The German songwriting camp ended three weeks ago but broadcaster NDR hasn’t stopped working on the national selection. Now the German broadcaster has revealed more details about the national final, including a hint at the date of the show.

Recently NDR’s entertainment coordinator Thomas Schreiber and Head of Delegation Christoph Pellander addressed German fans at a roadshow event in Cologne. There they confirmed more details about the German national final Unser Lied für Israel.

The national final will be held in Berlin. The exact date hasn’t been given, but the broadcaster had said that it will be held in the eighth calendar week of the year — somewhere between 18 and 24 February. Fans are speculating that based on previous years it will be Thursday the 21st, but there are also suggestions that it will be on Friday the 22nd this time. The broadcaster will confirm the date about six weeks prior.

The format of the show largely remains the same as last year. The German Eurovision act will be chosen by three groups: the Eurovision Panel, the jury of experts as well as the televoters at home. While Eurovision executive producer Jon Ola Sand will present the votes from the public, the Eurovision Panel votes will be revealed by 2018 spokesperson Anke Giffhorn and a male panelist.

The show will be presented by 2018 host Linda Zervakis and the beloved Barbara Schöneberger.

What happens now?

The six finalists — Aly Ryan, BB Thomaz, Linus Bruhn, Gregor Hägele, Lilly Among Clouds and Makeda — have composed about 25 songs. In addition, a few more submitted songs and two more acts who weren’t at the songwriting camp will now be put to the two juries. They will vote for the best over package of each singer. In total, over 30 songs — only two in German — will be rated.

Depending on what the jury’s favourites are, between six and eight acts will be selected for the German national final in February.

So we are not going to hear the 6-8 highest rated songs but only each artist with his best rated song. Hope we won t miss out a burner this way.
Clear advantage for the artist leading after the song voting procedure..

If I get your point, you think that if artist 1 has five songs with an 8,0 rating and artist 2 five songs with a 5,0 rating, then you would hear an 8,0 song and a 5,0 song in the National Final (one by each artist) instead of two 8,0 songs (by the same artist). That is right. But, each artist should get the same equal chance to perform with one song. And if they have a stronger song, but don’t pick it (because it is their decision at last) then it is like in a castingshow: wrong song choice… Read more »

Some mistakes in the article. It is Thomas Schreiber, not Shreiber. And Christoph Pellander, not Christian Pellande

“Christian Pellander” is sweet, but his name stays “Christoph” 😉
I am most excited about the fact that one of the around 30 songs is reported to be a duet of two of the six artists. So curious, which two artists did it and if this entry will be selected for the National Final… 🙂

And with “is sweet” I meant that the FACT is sweet, that his name is wrong in the article. This was no compliment for the man! Quickly clarified before my beloved @Onetimeuser gets crazy about my rate of compliments again, cause this was no one <3
