In February, Australia is due to hold its very first national final, Eurovision – Australia Decides. Over 700 songs were received and now broadcaster SBS has started to drop hints as to the first four artists who will compete in the competition.

SBS released a video clip which included obscured images of four artists who will be competing in the national final. While it’s not clear exactly who the four acts are, that hasn’t stopped fans from making educated guesses. Let’s take a look at the four.

Eurovision – Australia Decides teaser

Who will take the stage for Eurovision – Australia Decides? Can you recognise these artists?

The paint

This is one of the most difficult images to make out, but if you look closely you can see two heads. The ear of the left head is right in the middle of the image.

But not only are there two heads, they appear to be covered in some sort of decorative paint, possibly even glitter paint. Oh yes.

The big fan buzz suggests this image belongs to The Presets, a two-piece electro-pop group.

The group have been around since the mid 2000s and have enjoyed a long, successful career in Australia. They’ve also had a few singles reach the UK singles chart and the Billboard Dance chart, showing there’s potential for international appeal.

The wild face paint also suggests another pop duo, The Veronicas. The twin sisters have long been on many Eurovision wishlists and they have previously spoken positively about the song contest.

But until we figure out who these fascinating faces belong to, here’s The Presets 2009 single “My People”.

The eye

It’s not just any average eye — it’s a super glamorous eye, suggesting there’s an equally glamorous diva attached.

Three names have emerged from fan chat. The first is Ricki-Lee Coulter. The Australian Idol star is another long-running fan favourite for Eurovision, and has also said she’d be up for it.

Delta Goodrem is another potential owner of the eye. She was strongly rumoured to be Australia’s internal selection for 2016, and has already has a Eurovision connection as she penned Bella Paige’s Junior Eurovision 2015 song “My Girls”.

Less likely but still on many fans wishlists is Samantha Jade. The X Factor Australia winner has her supporters — there’s even a Facebook campaign for her to represent Australia at Eurovision this year.

Here’s Ricki-Lee’s new single “Unbothered” — clocking in at less than three minutes.

The tux

This is the act that there seems to be the most agreement about. Everyone is clear — this dapper gent has to be the tenor Mark Vincent.

The popera star came to fame in 2009 when he won Australia’s Got Talent at the tender age of 15.

He has since released eight albums, including his new release, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

Il Volo and Jacques Houdek have shown that — done well — there is room for popera at Eurovision. Could Mark Vincent bring some crossover style to Tel Aviv?

Here’s his 2013 cover of Beyoncé’s “Halo”.

The guitarist

Despite showing a clear shot of a guy with a guitar, there’s still a lot of uncertainty of who this could be.

One name that’s been brought up is Reece Mastin. He won the 2011 series of The X Factor Australia and has evolved from being a teen idol to a classic Aussie rocker.

Now just known as Mastin, the singer has recently release the EP Suitcase of Stories, which seems to be channelling the spirit of Barnsie.

The sight of a guitar has also prompted some fans to wonder if the Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer are involved. While we’d love to see them at Eurovision, the band is currently busy promoting their new album.

In the meantime, here’s Mastin performing his new single live.

What do you think? Who could these four acts be? Who else would you like to see competing in the Australian national final? Share your suggestions below!

One thing seems clear – we’re getting some genuinely big names in the mix. Which names precisely I can’t wait to find out.

As an Australian, I think the presets and reece mastin would give us our first DNQ, the presets have some great music which I am a big fan of but it isnt really stuff that does well in eurovision. And mastin just isnt good enough and hasnt been relevant for like 5 years. As for the others it would really depend on the song. Hopefully they all give great performances, definitely prefer this to an internal selection.

Damn I need to check on The Presets! ‘It’s Cool’ remixed by Bayer and Grant was amongst my top songs about 5 years ago, absolute brilliant.

I think you’re right. The eye colour and eye shape (it’s more of a monolid type of eye, I think?) seem from the teaser seem to match the music video pretty well. I have a feeling that the teaser’s pretty much taken images from artists’ previous music videos, which makes me almost certain that the duo could be The Presets, as I think I’ve seen something similar in the music video for ‘This Boy’s In Love’ (great song, btw). Mark Vincent might very well match the singer in the bow tie, the thumbnail seems to match the image that we… Read more »

Samantha Jade made a duo with Armenian Eurovision entry Andre. It’s a bop and it was amazing. Wish to see her in Eurovision.

I would absolutely live for The Presets! Their album Apocalypso is one of my all fave bangers, so check it out. The pair could also be Empire of the Sun, which would be cool to see surrealist staging in our NF.

On my wishlist:
-Peking Duk
-Tash Sultana
-Vera Blue/Celia Pavey
-Montaigne
-Tame Impala (one can wish)
-Tkay Maidza
-Gang of Youths

is it just me or is this NF h e a v i l y inspired by France’s from last year? France even released entry announcements in groups of four artists last year, not to mention the fonts , the branding, the name, etc. etc. etc.

This isn’t an artist/entry announcement just a teaser! The font is very common and similar to several national final also the name is clearly a spin on “Eurovision: You Decide”. . As far as branding , France used a galactic theme with red and blue flourishes while Australia has a multi-coloured pastel sunset. I can see where you are coming from but the similarities are mild at best.

It is kinda funny to observe that this article is about the potential artists for 2019 and the comments below discuss either the “jury vs. televote” aspect or the performances by Isaiah and Jess 😀

They’re really more like Sweden. Send a generic pop song that the televote doesn’t really care about but the juries love because of the country who sent it

Well we’ll see if they can actually produce a deserving entry and not a copy/paste generic pop song rejected by 50 major singers before ending up at Eurovision

Lets see if they send something less cheesy than their 2 previous attempts cause televoting is their weak aspect

lmao and they blame Europe for not wanting to vote for Australia. Like im totally down to vote for Australia if they send deserving songs like 2016!

me too. But their last 2 attempts were totally generic with questionable staging. I mean who can forget jessica who gave the mic to the audience as if she is doing a concert in Sydney?

No we did not! I’m sick of everyone acting like we were blaming Europe just because a few media outlets were salty. Most Australians hated the last two entries and thought the results were warranted.

Fully Agree, this is not Australian music, this does not showcase our culture. We need to send something which isnt copy paste from america.

Cheesy is a great thing for televoters when done well, look at Moldova 2018 or Croatia 2017! What they need is a song that stands out, rather than something middle-of-the-road like We Got Love or Don’t Come Easy.
