We can feel the #eurodrama coming and that’s because Spain’s broadcaster RTVE just released short demos of the 17 songs that hope to compete in this years special gala OT Eurovisión.

The grand final of OT 2018 just crowned Famous as the winner but the fight is far from over, as attention turns to Eurovision now. There are fifteen solo songs and two duets but there can only be one winner when we reach the euro-climax in January.

After Almaia’s love story enchanted Spain but didn’t resonate with voters at Eurovision 2018, Spain is turning the page on yet another unsuccessful attempt at Europe’s biggest music competition. The OT net is being cast wider this time, hoping to find the ideal entry for Tel Aviv.

How does the Eurovision selection process work?

Spain — as always — changed the process in which they are selecting their song for Eurovision. This year, the OT contestants recorded one-minute demos of their songs. Those demos are available online at RTVE.es and people can vote for their top three on a daily basis until the January 2. Keep in mind these are just demos, not the final versions, so judge them in consequence.

The three most voted songs advance directly to the live show. Two board members of broadcaster RTVE, one from RTVE Digital and two OT academy professors will select seven more songs from the remaining 14.

Then at the OT Eurovision Gala, ten songs will battle for the right to represent Spain in Tel AvivAfter the ten finalists are selected, the singers will work with the song composers and producers on the final versions of their songs.

Click here to listen to all the songs and vote for your favourites over at RTVE.

  • Alba Reche – “Qué será luego?”

Those are just demos of one 1 minute but for now I like María’s song the most. I wish you good luck.

My picks:
1. Famous, “No Puedo Mas” (It’s a tad old-fashioned, but he has the best voice and the song has a nice earnest feel to it and has a full-bodied texture to it that could make for a nice moment on-stage)
2. Joan Garrido and Marilia, “A Tu Lado.” (A standard Iberian love song, cheesy like a nice Spanish manchego. Builds nicely. Wonder if they can actually sing…)
3. Maria, “Muerdeme” (Very catchy.)
4. Julia, “Que Quieres que Haga” (It drags a teeny bit, but there’s a sweet chorus.)

Why don’t you all stop predicting (and failing to guess) and just say María’s Muérdeme is by far the best song out of the 17?

Overall quality is not the best. But that’s what we said last year and now we regret not sending “Lo malo”. If it’s going to be a 10-song final, this is my personal line-up (not my top!): First, finalists need to be there somehow (they deserve it better!!) 1. ¿Qué será luego? – Alba (she makes each performance a personal one, even though I don’t like her voice that much) 2. La clave – Natalia (can’t see her comfortable with the song, though) 3. ¿Qué quieres que haga? – Julia (that’s the most typical Spain) 4. No puedo más – Famous… Read more »

I must say I’m very dissapointed, not even a (really) good one for the contest. Some of them are decent (for a top 1520 at best…). Do you really think these are the best songs among 1000+ entries? Ruth Lorenzo’s entry was rejected and I’m sure it was far better based on what she does. The production has a very low quality like those karaokes you find on youtube that has a machine-made sound. Yeah, I know they are only demos, but all in them sound pretty cheap. They even sound alike. The electronic loop in Maria’s “Muérdeme” and Miki… Read more »

Only 4 of these songs are competitive enough for Eurovision and that is with a huge revamp. Ugh should’ve been Top 20 instead of Top 17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4v_aKUI9WE

Very bad songs this year, even if they are still projects (demos of 1 minute). If we are going to fight for the botton line at least lets have some fun. My option is “Muerdeme” of María. She is a horrible singer with an amazing attitude and seeing her on the stage “perreando” will be fun. Besides, we all know that the staging will be cheap again even if we send Madonna or Lady Gaga, so lets make it more surreal.

Bad ratings. People is a bit tired of OT now. This season OT reached to its worst ever figure in share, in 10 seasons. In addition a lot of the program’s buzz this year, even if it was a lot , with a lot of comments, opinions, tweets and stuff, was mostly criticism, and bad opinions. So yeah, people was still invested on the program, but it was not liked very much.
In addition there is a new government in Spain and in RTVE, that may have helped to its cancelation. 😉

Efraim
Guest
Efraim

Yep, but so far the new board of directors of TVE has focused most of its efforts on the news area. The entertainment department is mostly unchanged. So I doubt the reshuffle was that big a factor in the decision.

James

If bad ratings were the reason, we would have seen OT’s season being unceremoniously abbreviated already. Spacing out seasons seems like a better idea for TVE than, as Efraim said, oversaturating viewers with OT every year. Unlike other formats like Pop Idol, OT is more than just the weekly live performance shows on TV, but also an interactive experience spread out on noth broadcast and online, with the live feeds on Youtube serving as an extension of the show. This takes a lot of time and investment from viewers, something they will surely not be able to repeat for a… Read more »

The overall level of the songs isn’t catastrophically low as I feared, but I know the staging will still drag us down. I just know it. My personal top (with grades from 0 to 10): 1st: Famous – No puedo más (9.5) 2nd: Alba Reche – ¿Qué será luego? (9) 3rd: Miki – La venda (8.5) 4th: Miki & Natalia – Nadie se salva (8) Tied for 5th: Noelia – Hoy vuelvo a reír otra vez / Carlos Right – Nunca fui (7.5) 7th: Sabela – Hoy soñaré (7) 8th: Marta – Vuelve (6.5) 9th: Sabela – Dímelo de frente… Read more »

I am pretty sure they will go with something like Muerdemeby Maria , Todo bien by Marilia (very similar in my opinion), La venda by Miki or Hoy sonare by Sabela. (I mean I think, I don’t know, in my opinion those are the best options.) and I don’t see anything wrong with Hoy vuelvo a reir otra vez and Hoy sonare, great ballads, Noelia and Sabela are great performers, and with those kinds of songs both Ruth and Pastora did very well. 🙂 but if they want something different, there are options to choose from 🙂 and believe me,… Read more »

actually you can see how the vote is going, they have open an updated result each time you vote. And maría is winning by far, 20% of the votes (after 10k votes aprox), wich imo is a pretty remarcable figure, due there is 17 songs. The next option more voted is Natalia’s, with 10% followed by Alba’s, also 10%.

1. Miki – La Venda: A song that makes me want to move my body and which transmits joy and party. A singer who is very charismatic on stage.

2. María – Muérdeme: More or less for the same reasons as above.

3. Carlos Right – Nunca Fui: Fairly good and modern song, very radio-friendly voice. Reminds me of Blas Cantó’s “El No Soy Yo”.

4. Natalia y Miki – Nadie Se Salva: For those around Europe who like Despacito and similar, this might do the trick.

PLEASE SPAIN, DON’T SEND ANOTHER BALLAD!

I think Muérdeme has potential if María can sing it well. I don’t think it should be a problem for her, her lows are fine in my opinion (at least according to the only performance i’ve listened from her, Amorfoda), and I don’t think there will be any high notes in it.

I like the song (I actually am not a fan of lyrics, but …. ) and Natalia is great, very charismatic, has great stage presence (for me, in every duo they had in OT it was very hard to pay attention to anyone that wasn’t her 😀 )
the only reason why I am not voting that one is because of the lyrics . .. 😀 but hey, the people watching the final don’t understand it anyway, so it could go well 😀

In my opinion, any of this songs will be the spanish entry. Only Noelia’s powerballad sounds good to me (as usual in spanish poweballad songs).

A tu lado – he has the most basic male voice EVER. The song is rather predictable. Dímelo de frente – cute lil bop but typical radio fodder, you can tell they gave zero phuccs writing it. El equilibrio – enjoyable instrumental and rhythm, this is already passable. Hoy sonaré – you can tell A LOT is missing here, absolutely forgettable. Hoy vuelvo a reir otra vez – sounds very Disney, too much vocal showoff too little substance. La clave – the early 00s teen pop guitars gave me life, it bops, but it sounds too much like Ciao Adios… Read more »

On first glance, a number of them sound like telenovela intros (which is not necessarily a bad thing). Few uptempo ones sound a bit cheap, but could be catchy. I believe that the “cheap” factor will be rectified by announced revamps. Still deciding which three to vote for. Good luck, Spain.

Well, what a shock! Looks like another bottom 5 placing for Spain! Famous’ song is extremely underwhelming! I’ve seen the live performances of María, and she really isn’t good, performing a club anthem is going to be a trainwreck with those vocals!

I think Noelie was by far the best singer that got kicked out the competition, way too soon. Now she has the best voice for a song, in a quedate conmigo tradition. Nadie te sabe is the Lo Malo, this year.

I was not expecting that from spain at all. ‘Muérdeme’ is a bop, great song. Reminds me of those hits from Latin America that reach the charts nowadays. And which one is that? I can smell the typical trolls trying to predict the results already, just like you tried with Sobral. I also remember when in the beginning most people didnt give a damn about Elena. The song that gave Spain its best score in the last years was literally a troll act lol. Spain has been sending mostly boring ballads for the past few years. It’s about time they send something like Maria.

You speak nonsense. Maria’s song is different from anything spain has sent. The typical song that spanish people hyped last year was Tu cancion because of Almaia, not Lo Malo. And we all know how that ended…bottom place on the right side of the scoreboard…there goes the result of your ‘decent’ song.

One minute samples don’t help at all. So far I feel it’s is a forgettable/unispired selection. The main difference between the songs is how much of personality the artists managed to show. About that, I like what Noelia, Alba, Marta and Julia achieved. I wish I could add Famous to the list, but his song is… boring. I can’t believe they couldn’t find good songs even for Natalia! Many will vote for “Muérdeme” expecting it to be what “Lo Malo” could have been. There’s a problem though: María isn’t nearly as charismatic as Aitana and Ana War.

classic
Guest
classic

Here’s to hoping that she’ll get a very good stage show, lighting, dancers, camera angles, costume..
The more and more I listen to her demo the more clear it becomes that unless they polish that thing to the maximum (and send it to eurovision ofc), Spain is going to finish around 20-26 again.

Sabrina
Guest
Sabrina

Staging will play a huge part in the Spanish selection and later in their result in Eurovision. The problem is that RTVE has been consistently bad about it… I hope singers with good stage presence like Natalia, Miki and Famous will deliver entertaining performances that maybe will make their songs sound better.

I saw that you wrote about “La Venda” in your comment. It reminds me of “axé music”, a Brazilian genre of party songs. But the background track lacks some dynamic.

Really? I haven’t see much of her in the academy, but I think of María as a friendly performer, not someone that shines on stage. I have trouble imagining her bringing the whole persona a song like Muérdeme needs to work properly.

I’ll have to disagree with you. Maria is way more charismatic than Aitana and Ana War. She has, unlike those 2, a very strong character and opinions about many topics. She doesnt give a damn, has a badass attitude about everything. She’s crazy on and off stage. Aitana and Ana were your typical pop stars, sweet and hot chicks, very polite. Maria is different, which is what may earn her some points in eurovision. The song is not for her, but she makes it hers.

Sabrina
Guest
Sabrina

Well, like I answered to Rose, I haven’t followed her in the academy (the only full show I watched was the final, before that I only watched the weekly performances), so I don’t know about her atitude off the stage and her opinions. It’s funny, because on the stage she gave me the “sweet girl” vibe. I hope she can put all this atitude on her performance then. Because let’s not forget that most of the Eurovision audience will get to know her only in the stage, like I did in OT.
