Last year they let “La Forza” lead them to a top 10 placing. Now Estonia is looking for Elina Nechayeva’s successor, and there are 12 acts in the second semi-final of Eesti Laul 2019 in the running to do that.
In semi-final two we find some familiar faces from Eesti Laul, although there are no Eurovision returnees like in Semi 1. However, there’s no shortage of talent. There is Sissi, who is the daughter of Eurovision winner Dave Benton. Will she follow in her father’s footsteps? Or will it be frequent fan favourite Grete Paia this year? And what about Uku Suviste, who turned plenty of heads during his last visit in 2017?
Eesti Laul 2019: Semi-Final 2
Who can make it? Are you into Kerli Kivilaan‘s moody electro pop tune? Are you feeling her “Cold love“? Or do you rather like ‘Following Back‘ from Around the Sun? This young band with an intergalactic name rides the tropical beats and mixes them with indie rock.
And… well, where are the cats? Does your vote go to Kaia Tamm‘s electronic experiment “Wo sind die Katzen?‘. Are you meowing to that? If not there are many more conventional options in this field. Maybe Kadiah‘s naïve tune “Believe“? Or Synne Valtri‘s “I’ll do it my way“? Is she doing it the right way?
Popstress Grete Paia was one of the favourites three years ago with her “Stories untold”, but Juri Pootsmann beat her and got to Stockholm. Does she stand a better chance this year? She’s competing with a song in Estonian: “Kui isegi kaotan“, which roughly translates to ‘If I even lose’.
Also returning to Eesti Laul is Uku Suviste, who is — at this moment — competing on The Voice of Russia. Will his popularity help him and his pop tune “Pretty little liar“? Or maybe you’re saying “Hallelujah” to Lacy Jay‘s entry? She brings a more ethereal quality than Uku’s mainstream sound. Which one will do better?
Dave Benton’s daughter Sissi is walking on her own, and she comes this year with the sassy number “Strong“, mixing a bit of funk with her raspy vocals. Could she follow her father’s steps? Or what about Iseloomad‘s grungy “Kaks Miimest“? That song could well be from the same year when Dave Benton and Tanel Padar won Eurovision, but hey, sometimes vintage wins!
Riding the lounge there’s Lumevärv and Inga with their funky “Milline päev“. We’ve seen acts like this regularly at Eesti Laul. Can they be the first ones to actually succeed? Or can Cätlin Mägi & Jaan Pehk be the first camp act to win Eesti Laul after Kreisiraadio?
Out of the twelve competing entries, only six will make it to the final. But in our poll, you can vote for as many acts as you like. Be sure to click the box next to every act you want to support before pressing submit.
So no more talking, Europe — start voting now! You can choose as many options as you want, but you can only vote once.
Who should win semi-final 2 of Eesti Laul 2019?
[polldaddy poll=10186492]Semi-final 2 of Eesti Laul 2 will take place on February 2 in Tartu. Six acts will qualify for the grand final at Tallinn’s Saku Suurhall on February 16. Who should make it to the final? Vote and tell us in the comment section!
Believe is so underrated! It’s so beautiful and it really tells a story, unlike those radio pop tunes
My favourites are Pretty Little Liar, Believe, Cold Love and Kui Isegi Kaotan. Don’t get the Follow Me Back hype – it’s the worst of the lot for me.
A little dissapointed this year.
My 2 favourites here are “Follow me back” and “Cold love”.
I love Eesti Laul over the years, probably my favourite NF since 2016 but my god it’s so crap this year. I only like High Heels in the Neighbourhood but I feel I only like it because it’s Tanja and Birgit ?
Wo sind die Katzen ? so much fun !!! 🙂

It’s 100% Uku Suviste for me.
My vote goes to Follow Me Back.
Just really loving the NuDisco influence of the song.
What have you been smoking? “Parmumang” makes “Leto svet” sound like a gem! Jaan Pehk doesn’t deserve an embarrassing messy song, all his previous Eesti Laul efforts were far better.
Can’t see why a lot of people are saying this is a weak semifinal, the 2nd is stronger than the 1st imo and there’s more variety. My favorite of the pack is “Follow Me Back” by Around the Sun, a very cool, boppy and elegant song that mixes Disco, Electronica & Indie that just needs to add another 30 secs(to make it 3 mins long) to the excitement and fun. “Hallelujah” by Lacy Jay & Pretty Little Liar” by Uku Suviste are excellent different songs as well, Grete Paia & Lumevärv ft. Inga have ecstatic synth-pop songs which makes 2019… Read more »
Not as good as SF1 obviously.
Having said that, there are some decent songs. I like Sissi, Around The Sun and Kadiah the most.
Obviously Greta Paia has the best song and best Semi Final to push her song through to the final. It’s my favourite this year, Estonian whilst being radio – friendly but staying authentic at the same time. Also another Estonian pop song from SF1. But this selection is abysmal. Generally when a country hasn’t. agood teshlt the song quality should/would/we would like to hope would increase as we see a better chance of winning or performing well and thus bettering your career. however, these songs are borderline qualifiers at best. The gentleman from Vajé may be the one that sets… Read more »
I respect that it is well-created music. Sadly, I find it jarring to listen to. 🙁
Glad it has its fans though
Soovide puu is the only really good song, and all the favorites are in the first one. This semi is quite irrelevant, but if I had to choose a winner, I’d pick Milline päev.
Surely this is the weakest Eesti Laul in a long time.
Nah, 2014 or 2015 was the weakest Eesti Laul.
the cats should win, not the song, just them. This pack is very so-so.
I agree. They are great and have a cool italo disco vibe. If they get the staging right they could do well. Sooivide puu is nice but very outdated.
Grete’s song is by far the best IMHO. Uku’s song is quite catchy and has a nice flow to it. Also… I really enjoy Die Katzen song! It’s such a guilty pleasure. Honestly, I only see Grete and Uku as possible winners from this semi.
I vote Aisakell. The clear winner.
Roulette wheel for this Semi Final, to be honest. But prediction v. opinion as follows: Prediction: Grete Paia will slay should easily qualify. Lacy Jay will either win or come last (she has the most risky song to sing). Uku Suviste may qualify too – it depends on how much he has improved since the last time he was at Eesti Laul. (He has a better chance this time). Opinion: I actually really like “Cold Love” by Kerli Kivilaan, and I hope this does well. “Milline päev“ is really cool too. I’m not a fan of the novelty songs –… Read more »
