Slovenian broadcaster RTVSLO has revealed the ten acts who will compete in the national final EMA 2019. The line-up features EMA 2016 runner-up Raiven, and Slovenia’s Junior Eurovision 2014 act, Ula Ložar.

The announcement was made this evening, in a video presented by Slovenia’s Eurovision 2018 representative, Lea Sirk.

EMA 2019 – IZVAJALCI

To je deset izvajalcev izbora EMA 2019: Fed Horses, INMATE, Kim, Lumberjack, Okusti?ni, Raiven, Renata Mohori?, René, Ula Ložar, Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl

The most familiar name to EMA fans will be Raiven. The diva known for her colourful hair (currently a silky emerald shade), first competed in EMA 2016, where she made it to the superfinal with her song “Črno bel”. She narrowly missed out on winning, with 49.16% of the vote.

Raiven returned to EMA 2017, where her entry “Zažarim” placed third. She also returned to EMA 2018 — but this time as the show’s co-host and one of the interval acts.

Raiven confirmed her participation with a Facebook post, including the intriguing double-negative, “I will stand for all of us who are not rebels without a cause”. Could this be hinting at a lyric or theme of her EMA entry?

Making her EMA debut is a Slovenian JESC veteran, 16-year-old Ula Ložar. At the age of 12, Ula was Slovenia’s first JESC act upon their debut in 2014. Her song “Nisi sam (Your Light)” placed 12th in the JESC final.

Ula’s JESC song was written by Slovenian musical power couple Maraaya and she was also part of Maraaya’s 2017 Christmas single. With an established relationship, could the “Here For You” hitmakers also be behind Ula’s EMA 2019 entry?

The rest of the line-up includes a varied selection of contemporary Slovenian acts. It features alt-country group Fed Horses, rockers Inmate and Lumberjack, as well as a number of solo artists and duos. The national final promises an eclectic mix of performances.

EMA 2019 has ditched the semi-finals of recent years and will revert to having just one grand final. The ten competing acts will perform their songs on the night and a jury panel will select two acts to compete in the superfinal. From there, the public televote will select the overall winner.

A date for EMA 2019 has yet to be announced. And despite speculation, there’s currently no word on whether Lea Sirk will return to host next year’s final.

So as a Slovene here are my opinions; Most looking forward to Raiven of course, she’s one my favourite Slovenian artists, she’ll go for something experimental. And I love her looks, and all the colours really fit her. Zala & Gašper are the second act that I really like, BUT I don’t think their music is ESC friendly, they are VERY indie pop, kind of quiet electro ballads. But u should check them out, I really like Baloni, Valovi and S Teboi. Then we also have Ula Ložar, she’s under Maraaya so it will be good, that’s all I can… Read more »

I really liked Raiven’s 2016 song but her 2017 entry was weak – sure, it was amazing to see her turn into a human disco ball but the song felt like a poor man’s “Love Injected”. Let’s hope they came up with a better one this year.

I think they’ve purposely picked a selection of potentially weaker acts. Raiven should be sent, I’ll be surprised if she isn’t

I hope they give chance to Raiven thus year. She’s unique, great musician, actress, open LGFT supporter, and now she produces her songs in London’s Metropolis studios. I can’t see better artist to represent Slovenia at ESC.

With this format, I reckon RTVSLO already decided who is winning. I hope they chose something I like. It is quite possible they deliberately chose nine weak songs so nobody can object to their choice.

I’m looking forward to finding next year’s Slovenian treasure and I’m already weeping for this edition’s public favorite that RTVSLO is going to screw over.

Yep. Not as if they have any intention of picking the best song anyway. 😉
