maria natalia noelia

And then there were three! María’s “Muérdeme”, Noelia’s “Hoy vuelvo a reír otra vez” and Natalia’s “La clave” are the first three songs that have qualified to Operación Triunfo’s Eurovision Gala, the show through which Spain will select its Eurovision 2019 entrant.

Two weeks after the finale of Operación Triunfo, the first step of Spain’s Eurovision selection is now over. On Wednesday at 23.59, the online voting ended, and three songs have come out on top. Per OT rules, they have now qualified for the selection show as the public’s choices.

The absolute winner of this segment and a major fan favourite is María’s “Muérdeme”. A sticky and slightly sleazy hit with a Latin twang has been at the top of the public vote ever since it was first revealed. Bai la la la la…

María – “Muérdeme”

María wants you to bite her heart, but hey, she decides “if she loses the decency”. As she sings: “If I want, you want; if I dare to, you dare to”.

Will Spain dare to send her to Tel Aviv? Judging from the reaction of our William and Deban, they should consider it very seriously!

Noelia – “Hoy vuelvo a reír otra vez”

Coming in second place, there’s one of the strongest voices of the edition: Noelia, who sings “Hoy vuelvo a reír otra vez” (Today I’m laughing again).

After a promising beginning in OT, being the first “favourite”, Noelia didn’t quite take off in the contest, and she was eliminated in Gala 7…albeit with the closest margin of the history of OT. Marilia earned just 0.4% more of the vote than her.

Apparently, that wasn’t the only surprise Noelia had in store. She’s now finished in second place in the public vote and has secured a place in the Eurovision gala for her big voice and her power ballad.

Natalia – “La clave”

Coming in third, just like at Operación Triunfo, it’s Natalia. Her tune “La clave” and its urban feel have conquered the hearts of many Spaniards, who have put her through to the gala.

She’s finished right ahead of the OT winner and pre-contest favourite Famous. He’s one of the contestants who has said he really wants to go to Eurovision, but his song “No puedo más” has fallen short of the necessary votes to qualify through this segment.

“Muérdeme”, “Hoy vuelvo a reír otra vez” and “La clave” are the first songs to qualify to the Eurovision gala. Another seven will join them eventually, after the jury’s choice. Then we will finally hear the full versions of them all and (hopefully) some revamps.

Do you think these three are the best options? Which other songs would you have put through? Do you think any of these songs will go to Eurovision? Who do you see in Tel Aviv? Tell us in the comment section!

It’s really sad to see that it looks like we’re on for another Manel Navarro situation if Maria isn’t picked. Famous seems to be the general public’s favourite in Spain after winning the show and after his performance with Cesar Sampson you can hear the crowd chanting “Eurovision” Not all Spaniards even knew about the vote online, It was really only Eurofans who voted, and typically the Spanish eurofans went for cheap, disposable, and stereotypical bops that never ever do well at Eurovision. Maria isn’t the only good artist here. There are plenty of good options. Carlos Right is fantastic,… Read more »

Can someone who speaks spanish tell me and other wiwi readers whether Miki wants to go to eurovision or not? La Venda is clearly the second best song people like.. Asking this because apparently Maria doesnät want to go which is sad.

According to TVE, the songwriter of La venda is Adrià Salas, best known for his work as a member of Barcelona-based rumba/ska group La Pegatina.

To this point, Miki’s only reaction has been a tweet thanking everyone who voted for his songs, and the composers who wrote them.

Mikis “La Vende” should have been there as well. But the 3 selected are great though the ballad will just be another ballad from Spain… Not the best choice for Eurovision.

Maria said it doesn’t make sense to send her to Eurovision, because there are other people that want to go. This time she has been very clear refusing the oportunity, now she is the favourite. I think “La Venda” and “Muérdeme are the best options, so it’s a big let down to hear that. We may have another situation like Beth in 2003, when she didn’t like her song nor Eurovision. Btw, I think the jury will choose the same song that have made the public top 10. Except Natalia and Miki’s “Nadie se salva”, Julia will be chosen instead… Read more »

She doesn’t want to be involved with Eurovision and she also doesn’t like the fact that the 2019 edition is going to be in Israel. I just wonder what made her want to participate in OT in the first place? A possible Top 40 in Spanish charts and being a one-hit wonder?

Many of the OT favorites last year were totally cool with doing Eurovision and it somewhat improved their careers. Like can you imagine where Aitana and Ana Guerra would be without the release of “Lo Malo”?

I’m very surprised that Noelia made the cut. But I guess it makes sense. Since “Muérdeme” is the frontrunner, a power ballad is the most obvious counterpoint to it. I hope they revamp ALL the tracks before finally releasing them. When we compare these samples with songs from other national selections, it gets clear that they were recorded in a rush.

I really like Noelia’s song. If she can pull it off live, she’s the biggest competition to Maria for the win. I agree, comparing the songs to most other finals (half of Supernova excluded, though), it’s obvious they are more like a demos and need more work on them. Who knows, maybe the finished products will give us few real gems? My money is on Noelia and Sabela in that regard, since their songs aren’t as repetitive as some others. Both Muerdeme and La clave would need a bit of changing pace in the second verse to make them striking.

Noelia on stage, she owns the stage.
She reminds of shiri in 2005. She can pull a number like that. Ahhhhh :)sabela’s song is very unique.
She got stronger. You can trust them. Dame as julia and marta.

Noelia was my favorite when OT started, Julia became my favorite in the end. Sabela really grew on me (I wish she could sing in gallego for the Eurovision selection, it would be a nice touch). And I always had a sweet spot for Marta, whose sample is actually my favorite. So I guess we have similar taste for singers! Hope all of them can be in the final along with Alba, Famous and Miki.

I’m not sure about her song. To be honest, I’m not sure about any of them, because the samples are very inconclusive to me. But Noelia has something that may help, she sings with a signature. It hasn’t worked well for her in OT but she’s someone who I believe will shine at the moment she finds the right material. Maybe it’s this song? I agree about the need of some pace changing on the songs you mentioned. Maybe they’re already there, we’re still in the dark about the other 2 minutes of each track. Anyway, all the recordings need… Read more »

It’s not because it’s a power ballad, it’s because she’s the contestant that wants to go the most, and has a “decent” although mediocre, song. The audience chose her because of her love for eurovision.

But wouldn’t the same apply to Famous then? Her wish to be in the contest may had played some part (I don’t know how big and/or organized is her fanbase), but this kind of song is well linked with the Spanish culture. And it stands out between a selection that has a lot of pop tracks.

6. Julia “Qué quieres que haga”

Actually the rules of the pre-selection published by TVE established that the jury will choose “up to seven” songs, so there might be less than 10 entries making it to the Eurovision gala.
