Conchita did it, and Måns did too. Even the kids of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2012 did it in the group number. And now Bulgarian superstar and Eurofan favourite Poli Genova is throwing in her two cents. What is it? Singing about and embodying the phrase Heroes, or, in this case, ГЕРОИТЕ.

Writing on Instagram, The Voice of Bulgaria judge said: “I chose to present you #HEROES today because it is a special project for me, inspired by the strong, brave people, regardless of age, gender and race. Exactly those who are not afraid to fight for their future! Because that’s us – #HEROES of our time!”

Classic Poli, the song boasts incredibly contemporary production with anthemic chanting and just the right amount of electronic flourishes. Regardless of whether you understand Bulgarian or not, you’ll feel the positive vibe — perfect for starting the new year right.

The stunning video shows Poli singing before what appears to be a luminous white cloud. It provides soft lighting as a pair of dancers spin, pirouette, fall to the ground and more. As they lift each other up and literally stand on point, lights emerge and fade, creating a gorgeous visual landscape for Poli to shine. The storm cloud gives way to the power of her voice.

Where does the journey take us? To a place of reckoning it seems. The couple eventually dance inside of a cube wrapped in plastic. Are they trapped as a result of outside forces or the problems between them? And does it even matter? Inside that space they have each other, and by the end of the video they’re safe and secure in the other’s arms.

The release of the video coincides with St. Jordan’s Day, also know as Epiphany, which marks the day Jesus was baptised in the Jordan River. According to the story, the sky opened during the ceremony and the spirit of God appeared as a dove.

Bulgarian folklore has a slightly different take, saying that the night before — that’s the 5th of January — the sky opened and people’s prayers were finally heard.

Coincidence or not, the song definitely has a spiritual vibe that elevates it beyond disposable pop. It showcases Poli’s talents, and gives up a bit of hope and strength in the process.

If we talk about Eurovision stars singing “Heroes” in the intro (Conchita, Mans, JESC 2012), you might add Helena Paparizou. She also has a song called “Heroes” and it was the Official Anthem for the European Athletic Championships in Gothenborg in 2006, the year after her victory 🙂

This reminds me so much of P!NK … music, choreography … especially the song “What about us”.
