Earlier today we told you about five new songs in the Eurovision: Australia Decides national selection. And now SBS has gifted us with another nugget to chew on. Ella Hooper, Tania Doko and Alfie Arcuri have been revealed as part of the lineup. Those final three give us the tantalising ten who will now compete to sing at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

Their inclusion adds a bit more diversity to the already diverse show, which is set to unfold on February 9 on the Gold Coast.

Alfie Arcuri

The winner from the 2016 series of The Voice Australia, Alfie Arcuri has previously tweeted that he “loved the idea” of performing at Eurovision last year as we featured him as a potential contender for Lisbon. An outspoken member of the LGBT community, his debut studio album Zenith was released in July 2016 and peaked at number 5 on the Australian Record Industry Association Charts.

Speaking about his upcoming Eurovision experience, Alfie is all for the journey:

“It’s an honour to be involved in a competition that celebrates and embraces music and diversity… and to take this journey alongside such amazing Australian talents is truly incredible! There’s always something special about the first – scary but exciting!”

Alfie will be performing “To Myself”, which you can listen to here.

Ella Hooper

Singer and media personality Ella Hooper has been a staple of the Australian rock scene since the 1990s, as a member of rock group Killing Heidi. She Beyonce’d out of the group in 2012, since then recording solo singles and performing across Australia regularly. Her latest single, “To The Bone”, was released in 2018 – so no doubt her Eurovision appearance will tie strongly with her upcoming album release, scheduled mid this year.

“It’s very exciting to be involved in anything that is the first of its kind, and in recent years I have become more and more fascinated with Eurovision, so it’s perfect timing! I’m hoping to bring a bit of traditional rock ‘n’ roll energy to a bombastic performance of a meaningful pop song.”

Tania Doko

As part of the due Bachelor Girl, Tania Doko had major success in the late 90s with her smash hit “Buses and Trains”, was a top 10 hit in Australia and New Zealand and made the charts in Sweden and the United Kingdom.

No stranger to the Eurovision Song Contest, Tania Doko co-wrote Alexa Curtis‘ JESC 2016 song “We Are”, which finished 5th. No doubt her experience will make her a strong contender.

“This is one of those unplanned, didn’t-see-this-coming little chapter in my career I’m embracing with a sense of adventure and excitement. Then, as a songwriter performing a song I co-wrote, there’s the icing on the cake right there!”

Today’s announcement coincides with four entries that were released today by Aydan, Mark Vincent, Electric Fields and Leea Nanos.

The three acts announced today complete the entire lineup for the Australian national final – joining previous entries Sheppard, Courtney Act and Kate Miller-Heidke.

In association with the Queensland Government via Tourism and Events Queensland and the City of Gold Coast, Eurovision – Australia Decides will be presented at the Gold Coast Convention Centre on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February.

“To myself” is such a beautiful song. At times it’s slow, at times is more powerful. Great vocals! The live performance can elevate it. I really like it. Up to now, I’m happy of how good most of the songs are in this NF.

I’m loving these songs so far…there’s not one that I think is a dud based on the studio cuts. Electric Fields and Leea Nanos are my favourites so far but am looking forward to hearing the remaining four. Should be a great National Final…can’t wait!

For some reason I dislike Sheppard – maybe it’s the church camp vibe they’ve got going.

Yeah Alfie’s song could be so great live, but admittedly I’ve only heard a few of the songs from this final.

You mean “WILL make her a strong contender”?

She’s so out of breath when she raps live. No, thank you.

Iggy Azalea will barely even admit she’s Australian so there’s no way she’d be keen on trying to compete for us at Eurovision.

I was hoping for James Reid but he’s probably not famous enough in his birthplace to warrant an invite.
