It’s time to turn to Budapest: Hungary is kicking off their traditional national selection show A Dal to find the act who can be AWS’ successor and fly the Hungarian flag in Tel-Aviv.

And things are becoming a bit more serious as the first heat will kick off Saturday from 19:30 CET. And as the acts competing in this heat have been announced, now it’s time to ask you, who do you think should qualify from heat 1 of A Dal?

Since six acts out of the ten will advance to the semifinals, you’ll be able to vote for 6 different artists maximum (but if you have only one favorite, you don’t have to vote for more 🙂

We’re making this easier for you, so we’ve compiled the 10 songs competing in this heat into a playlist for you, so you can listen to the songs below:

A DAL 2019 HEAT ONE PLAYLIST

WHO SHOULD QUALIFY FROM HEAT ONE OF A DAL 2019?

Great line-up. Sadly Deniz and Oliver will have to battle for one last spot.

10 – DENIZ – “Ide várnak vissza”

It works for what it is and I find this entry quite enjoyable. Still, rap is not always well received in Eurovision so this would be a risky choice.

Very good, well-performed contemporary ballad.

Thank you to A Dal for the show. I will now be covering France from this point onwards, but I’ll be sure to check back later on the other performances tonight. x

08 – Nomad – “A remény hídjai”

Ok rock song, but quite formulaic. Lacks passion and doesn’t really excite me.

07 – Timi Antal feat. Gerg? Demko – “Kedves Világ!”

We’ve heard better folkloristic entries in A Dal. It’s not terrible, but emotionally undecided. I can’t really tell where this song was supposed to be heading.

Juries are really tough this year. When it started, i was afraid that Gergo Szeker might not qualify due to ”only” 41 points (A Dal sometimes gives up to 46), but now I see that he certainly will, because other ratings are way below expected. 33 points for Lighthouse? 31 for Frida? Seriously?

Yeah the scores are harsh, but juries are there to do a job and so that’s what they’ll do. To be honest I’m quite disappointed with this heat of A Dal so far, and was expecting some low scores.

I know they are, but the thing is, I vastly disagree with the majority of their scores. I guess the female judge would be the one I agree with the most. I mean, Kedves vilag and Remeny hidaj above Lighthouse and Frida? They must be joking. Sure, there are some bad songs, like Lazlo’s, but majority is really good.

06 – Olivér Berkes – “Világítótorony”

It’s a beautiful melody, but Olivér sings the song in a slightly old-fashioned, over-acting kind of way, which bothers me a little. However, he’s confident. Also the musical arrangement could be a bit more creative.

It’s a very good song, with a missing 4th minute. The performance works, but M_K is right about the over-acting – maybe a bit less of that and more open vulnerability?

05 – Barni Hamar – “Wasted”

I’m not a fan of this entry. They tried hard but I don’t find the overall package authentic. It’s a sum of various bits and pieces that seem “contemporary” or “interesting” but they don’t really blend. I’m also missing some charisma in the performance.

I thought this was the best performance so far. The graphic inputs didn’t seem to have much to do with the song, unless it was about getting wasted on computer graphics? But they worked in holding my attention. The singer’s voice is still very young and underdeveloped in places, yet somehow that adds to the song. Anyhow, I don’t understand how the points-scoring works in the show, but it looks like he might be out. Oh well 🙁

04 – Rozina Pátkai – “Frida”

Very, very good. It has that “mystical” kind of style but it’s still focussed. The performance is “Eurovision ready”. The only thing I’m missing is some kind of variation in the second half.

This had the potential to be great, but I felt like I was watching my Mum singing something spiritual after getting out of church. I’m sorry, this didn’t work for me.

03 – László Váray – “Someone Who Lives like This”

Musically, I love this entry, it has this “Eurovision moment” kind of emotionality to it without being cheesy. It shouldn’t be performed in English though.

A talented live musician with a song that I felt to be somewhat plodding. We haven’t seen a qualifier yet, IMO

02 – Konyha – “Százszor visszajátszott”

It’s a nice piece of 1990s-style Britpop. The verses are a bit lengthy and the chorus (as well as the instrumental bits) lack a bit of energy. A decent effort but this would most likely be swallowed in a field of 26 acts in a Eurovision final.

Sadly, this held my attention for about 45 seconds before I started thinking about making tea. That’s not a good sign.

01 – Gerg? Szekér – “Madár, repülj!”

I’m not really a fan of spoken word but I think the melody in the verses is quite nice (maybe a bit too “static”). The staging is decent but somehow the singer seems to be a tad too nervous to show the emotions that are needed to pull off this kind of song.

Agreed. He looked and sounded overwhelmed by the occasion. I also felt the song was melodically awkward.

The regular DUNA live stream works perfectly (at least in Germany it does).

A Dal always delivers one of the best national selections. My votes go to Oliver Berkes and Konyha.

My favourites here are 3: 1. OLIVÉR BERKES: Do you remember these ballads in Eurovision that were not boring at all but beautiful in their simplicity? That’s what this song reminds me. I don’t speak Hungarian but I don’t mind because I like the song whatsoever. 2. DENIZ : At first listen I didn’t quite like it. But the more I hear it the more I like it. Even the rap part is good, though I’m not a fan of rap. It blends nicely with the music and the female voice. 3. GERG? SZEKÉR: A very interesting song. It starts… Read more »

I love how Hungary do their thing and don’t care about what others think. Pretty much like Italy, and both are doing very well in the contest. Hope to see Budapest hosting the contest soon.

What a great semi! The two songs I care about the most are GERG? SZEKÉR – “MADÁR, REPÜLJ!” and OLIVÉR BERKES – “VILÁGÍTÓTORONY”. As long as these make it through, I’m more than happy…

Picking four to get eliminated from here is tough.
There are actually no bad songs here. You have to expect Laszlo and Nomad to find it tough going and probably need to do something special to qualify.
For the other two eliminations, I would expect one of the groups (Deniz/Konyha) and one of the girls (Think it’s harsh that the two best female acts seem to have been paired up).

Again, why do so many quality songs have to be in the same semi. Really hoping for Gergo Szeker, Rozina, Konyha, Deniz and Oliver to go through. Good luck! My overall ESC winner could be in this semi.
