After much speculation over Poland‘s entry for Eurovision 2019, broadcaster TVP has finally confirmed it will internally select its act for Tel Aviv. The broadcaster is now accepting applications from interested artists.

The broadcaster has published rules for interested artists. The regular Eurovision conditions apply (three minutes, no animals, etc), but TVP also notes that songs may not contain fragments of folk melodies nor audio loops.

Applications close on February 5, giving interested acts less than two weeks to get their entries in. And the broadcaster has given themselves an even shorter deadline. TVP will announce the confirmed artist and song on February 8.

Why has Poland ditched its national final?

In the past decade, Poland has used national final Krajowe eliminacje five times to select its Eurovision act. The format has brought Poland mixed results at Eurovision, from Michał Szpak’s triumphant eighth-place finish in 2016 to Gromee feat. Lukas Meijer shock non-qualification last year.

Last year Poland ditched the junior version of Krajowe eliminacje and internally selected Roksana Węgiel with “Anyone I Want to Be”, who went on to win the contest.

Last year, TVP president Jacek Kurski spoke about the benefits of internal selection. He told Radio Zet, “Sometimes it is better to make such an intuitive choice, but then you have to bear full responsibility for it.” He added, “With Roksana, I succeeded. It was a hit.”

Kurski also pointed out that established artists don’t always want to compete in a national final. They have to associate themselves with lesser-known acts and there are big fears about losing out to them.

The announcement to use internal selection follows earlier fan speculation that Polish pop star Natalia Szroeder had been in talks with TVP. The songstress recently posted an update to Instagram, where she wrote of having something to share in February.

Some fans interpreted this as meaning Natalia would soon confirm her Eurovision participation. However — as increasingly seem to be the case in such situations — she later explained she was referring to a new single and not Eurovision.

When you look at Polish best selling albums undeniably Poland buys alternative and hiphop. The celebrities and artists mentioned in the context of eurovision are even out of top50. Poland should sent what tey got really best or someone who is with one leg on the alternative side and but is also flirting with mainstream. Natalia Nykiel? Daria Zawia?ow? Rebeka? Something composed by Daniel Bloom? Dziarma?

Just some Polish fan theories: some people say, that TVP already has preferred artist(s), with whom they already had some meetings and generally their participation is pretty certain, and open submission is organised just to pretend like it’s an democratic choice, and everybody could take part. The other theory says, that indeed TVP was consulting with some artist about the participation in Eurovision, but it ended with a fail, which left TVP with nothing, so they decided to quickly organize submission – in 2016 Polish artists had about the same time to submit their songs. These are just theories, but… Read more »

The second one sounds much more credible.
If the announced rules were just to “pretend”, they could as well post them in december.

And he’s also much of a diva, kinda “look at me, I’m so cool and what not” :/ He’s been hosting renewed Polish version of the show Wheel of Fortune (where he also does sometimes covers of songs, but these performance are sooooooooo bad… not even the band playing on the show with Kasia Dere?, one of our backvocalists from 2018, can help… :/ ) and from what I know from people who were on the recordings that the guy was really rude towards people… :/

Another “shock non-qualification”? Damn, I must have been asleep in 2018 because I wasn’t shocked a single time. 😛 During the semi finals, anyway. I WAS shocked at the outcome of the jury voting in the final.

Oh my, I thought they were already done and that they have already chosen the artist and song at this point. I hope this won’t be a trainwreck.

Why should they? There are only a few countries that have already chosen their artists/songs. And some will do it in march.

This will likely be among the submissions, and I’m personally all for it! Especially after they completely snubbed her submission last year

It’s rock…If we’re thinking like that, so ALL eurovision songs that aren’t newest EDM are outdated.

All of this seems a bit rushed, doesn’t it? I could be wrong, but I don’t feel too positive about this situation.

The call for submissions may have already been made behind closed doors but only made it public only now. No way would they get quality entries if they give themselves such a small window for submissions and an even smaller window to reveal their act days after submissions closed.

Why? Good artist had already been preparing for Krajowe Eliminacje. They have good songs – the only thing left to do now is to send them.

I meant that in the context that on paper, it looked like they (TVP) have only made calls to have songs submitted to them now, but it may not necessarily be the case because of the small window of submission between now and February 5 and the announcement of a chosen song and artist happening days later on the eighth.
