News from Slovenia has been piling up in recent weeks.  Back in December, we learnt the 10 artists who would be partaking in this year’s edition of Evrovizijska Melodija 2019 (EMA 2019). Then, a few days ago we were treated to short snippets from each entry. Today, we received slightly longer teasers of the ten competing entries, as well as some information provided by the respective artists. Let’s take a look at the ten snippets as well as what the artists had to say about their entries in the competition.

Kim — “Rhythm Back To You”

“My name is Kim Begovič and I will be performing at EMA 2019. My song carries the title “Rhythm Back To You” and was written by Raay and Marijetka Vovk (Maraaya). I think my song will appeal to the listeners as it is unique, special and something new on the Slovenian music scene. The song is uplifting, happy and creates a good mood. Now, finally, I have the opportunity to show what I know and to live my dream.”

Renata Mohorič — “Three Bridges”

“I’m Renata Mohorič and I’ll be partaking in EMA 2019. My song is called “Three Bridges” and was composed by Grigor Koprov and written by Swedish lyricist Stiko Per Larsson. My song is calm and simple but towards the end it builds and develops more emotions.”

René — “Ne poveš”

“My name’s René, and I will be taking part in EMA 2019. My song is called “Ne poveš” (“You Don’t Say”) and was composed by Jean Markič. The song itself is in a somewhat funk and RnB style and is very much a positive number. Now it’s time that my musical journey begins and that’s why I decided to take part in this year’s EMA.”

Fed Horses — “Ti ne poznaš konjev”

“We are Fed Horses, and we’ll be performing at EMA 2019. Our song is titled “Ti ne poznaš konjev” (“You don’t know the horses”) and was written and composed by yours truly. It is a ballad infused with country elements and is one of the most honest tracks we have ever written and will hopefully reach out to the public. EMA is still one of the biggest televised music festivals in Slovenia and we consider it a wonderful chance to perform to a wide audience.”

Ula Ložar — “Fridays”

“I am Ula Ložar and I will be taking part in EMA 2019. My song carries the title “Fridays” and the authors are Raay, Anej Piletič, as well as Charlie Mason. The song encourages girls that Fridays are for them and to leave the boys behind. Since competing in Junior Eurovision, being able to participate in EMA and Eurovision has been a long-time dream of mine.”

Lumberjack — “Lepote dna”

“Our band’s name is Lumberjack and we will be competing in EMA 2019. Our song is entitled “Lepote dna” (“The beauty below”). We didn’t want to make any complications so we composed a piece for ourselves and that was it. We are going to EMA without any expectations — we’ll show up and see where the road takes us. ”

Okustični — “Metulji plešejo”

“We are Okustični and we’ll be taking part in EMA 2019 with the song “Metulji plešejo” (“The butterflies are dancing”), which was written and composed by Mate Bro. Our song is beautiful, deep and touches upon those moments that we all have in our lives. Why are we going to EMA? Well because it is the widest platform that enables one to spread their song to the entire Slovenian population.”

INMATE — “Atma”

“Our name is INMATE and we’ll be participating in EMA 2019 with the song “Atma” which was written and composed by us. Our song is somewhat different to all that has been performed on EMA as of yet. With the song we are presenting, we aim to rid the stereotypes of metal music in Slovenia and present a different side to it.”

Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl — “Sebi”

“We are Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl and we will be performing at EMA 2019 with the song “Sebi”” (“Oneself”), which we wrote and composed ourselves. We decided to take part in EMA 2019 as we wanted to reach out to listeners who had not come across us on the radio or internet.”

Raiven — “Kaos”

“I am Raiven and I will be taking part in the 2019 edition of EMA. The title of my song is “Kaos” (“Chaos”) and was written and composed by myself along with July Jones, Lazy Joe and Peter Khoo. The song was created entirely as an experiment and we initially thought that not much would come out of it. It isn’t pretentious; when we created the song, we didn’t think about whether it would be published on the radio or not. Therefore, I had to be a little bit encouraged to sign up to EMA with the song. I signed up for the Slovenian national selection as I wanted to have the best opportunity to promote my new upcoming album.”

What can we expect from the show itself?

Even if the broadcaster skipped the semi-finals, they still know how to build excitement. In the final there will be two voting rounds. After all 10 acts give their best on stage in Ljubljana, the best two songs will be decided by a jury vote alone. The top two acts will then compete in the super final. Only one of them gets the crown, and that’s decided by 100% televoting. Does that sound familiar to you? The method was used in 2016 when ManuElla won EMA but then crashed out of the semis in Stockholm. We hope that’s not a bad omen…

I really like Kim’s song, even though it’s really similar to Addicted To You by Avicii.

I’m so sorry for those who don’t speak Slovene. Raiven’s lyrics are always soo amazing, futuristic, artistic and deep.
Hope she translates few lines in the case of winning, cuz Europe has to hear the messenge!

Few interesting facts about our preselection, since there is no Slovenian wiwiblogger and EMA is not covered that much on Wiwi. KIM’s song is co-written by Jimmy Jansson (he has written 5 songs of Melfest 2019, including Magraret’s and LIAMMO’s songs) Raiven in working with international team and recorded her song in London’s Metropolis studios (where Mark Ronson produced Back to black. The Metropolis studios has also been used by Queen, Michael Jackson, U2, Lady Gaga, Adele, Rihanna…) And random fact: since we’ve built an arena for 17.000 people few yeara ago, RTVSLO says they are ready in the case… Read more »

Kaossssss! Honestly I’m rooting for all the different, new-sounding songs in every selection. Let’s make Eurovision 2019 one to remember

This is a very well crafted national selection. There’s diversity in every sense we can imagine: Slovenian/English lyrics, downtempo/midtempo/uptempo, female/male vocals, indie/mainstream and a bunch of different genres represented. Everything is well produced, all the voices are pleasant to my ears, I really hope they reach the final again, because they worked for it. Those who grabbed my attention so far are Zala & Gasper’s “Sebi” (I could listen to it for hours) and Raiven’s “Kaos” (messy in an interesting way).

Good Selection! Congratz to Slovenia. My favourites Kim, Inmate and “Sebi”.

Raiven’s “Kaos” should be the chosen one! Very interesting and riskier and beatifully arranged to represent that “chaos” without sounding messy. It’s also risky enough to stand out, but not pretentious. Go for it, Slovenia!

Another good options, in my opinion, would be “Sebi” by Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl or “Atma” by Inmate. I kinda like “Ti ne poznaš konjev” by Fed Horses, but I think it isn’t competitive.

It’s a very good selection. Good job, Slovenia. My favorite is “Sebi” by Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl. It’s not the type of song one can hear every year in Eurovision. It could do really well in May if performed well.

So I really liked Ula and Kim from the first snippets, but Ula sounds so generic and the lyrics are jusr sad. Kim is too Avicii for me. But Kaos is very interesting. The dark horse however is in my opinion Sebi. So etherial, she sounds angelic and it is just magical and mysterious at the same time. Love the song and it could do soooo well in Eurovision I think. But I would be surprised if they went for it..

I’m not so sure about Raiven making it to the televote final anymore. The jury could stop her. Anyway I still think it will be Raiven along with either Ula or Kim. But don’t count out René or Zala & Gasper just yet, they could be dark horses. The other 5 are just filler.

I think it’s horrible to choose judges as the ones who will determine those 2 which are fighting for the win. Raiven could be left out, I really hope that won’t happen.

I think fight for win will be between Kim,Ula and Raiven, and best chance have Ula. My favorite this year is Kim

I dont get the hype with Raiven song Kaos. Ok it’s original because it’s a trap song but i have the feeling people only like it because its different (but different doesnt mean always good). I have also the feeling that it will be a fanwank like AWS last year from Hungary (AWS was predicted in Top 10 and ended out of it)

I love the song Kaos completely different from the current work of Raiven, a person like her, Slovenia I need, for Eurovision you can create a very interesting show in Tel Aviv, looking at the semi-final, now is the time to win ema and perform in the colors of Slovenia, with your song Kaos

Raiven shamelessly admitting she’s doing EMA as a promo spot for her album, Tori Kelly is shook

noone

ALL of them said they are just here for the promotion. Every year singers go to EMA just to promote their albums, most of them don’t want to win. Even Omar Naber said it himself, he didn’t really want to go back in 2005 but had to. EMA is the only music festival and pop music TV show Slovenia has, so if you are a singer you HAVE to go to EMA, that’s the only way to get famous in Slovenia.

Tom

The fact that it’s not Eurovision-friendly is a good thing tbh. I mean were Israel 2018 or Portugal 2017 Eurovision-friendly? They were not. A lot of people watch Eurovision performances and react to them like “oh this one is good, too.. oh that one is also good.” But they’re not good enough for people to pick up their phones and vote. People vote for stuff that looks and sounds different/fresh . The songs like “Fuego” or “You’re the only one” would only be voted by Eurovision bubble, but I don’t think that’s enough to win the whole thing anyway. Because… Read more »

Toy was eurovision friendly while Salvador’s song wasn’t or even Jamala’s wasn’t but they had the difference factor! So once more they had something that appealed even though the song didn’t.

The Slovenian tradition of talking over the songs is so annoying. It’s like the want to distract from the quality or something. Just let us listen. It is what it is. Renata’s song comes from a Macedonian composer (who also composed Karolina’s “Mojot svet”, among others) and a Swedish lyricist. Too bad it’s not more interesting. Ula’s song doesn’t seem to be what I had hoped it would be, either. These snippets are still not quite enough to make up my mind about the two last songs, “Sebi” and “Kaos”, but as of now, I think it will be a… Read more »
