Earlier this month, Portuguese broadcaster RTP released the 16 songs in contention to represent Portugal at Eurovision 2019 in Tel Aviv.

After a stunning victory in 2017 with Salvador Sobral and a last place finish in 2018 with Cláudia Pascoal, will Portugal be able to bounce back to the top again?

Four songs will qualify from each semi-final. Those semi-finals will take place on February 16 and 23. The Grand Final is set for March 2 inside Portimão Arena.

The song “O Jantar”, previously sung by Marlon, will now be performed by João Couto. Marlon withdrew from Festival da Canção 2019 for personal reasons and wishes João the best of luck.

Festival da Canção 2019: Semi-Final 1 participants

  • Calema “A Dois”
  • Conan Osíris “Telemóveis”
  • Ana Cláudia “Inércia”
  • Soraia Tavares “O meu sonho”
  • João Campos “É o que é”
  • Filipe Keil “Hoje”
  • Ela Limão “Mais Brilhante que Mil Sóis”
  • Matay “Perfeito”

Festival da Canção 2019: Semi-Final 2 participants

  • Lara Laquiz “O Lugar”
  • Madrepaz “Mundo a mudar”
  • Mariana Bragada “Mar Doce”
  • Dan Riverman “Lava”
  • NBC “Igual a ti”
  • Mila Dores “Debaixo do Luar”
  • João Couto “O Jantar”
  • Surma “Pugna”

Who should qualify for the final of Festival da Canção 2019?

I’m still waiting for the WIWIBLOGGS reaction to the Portugal’s National Selection this year. It’s seems forgotten among the other selections that had more attention. We need your true review video. And I don’t ask for each song but at least one per Semifinal. Pleaseeee 😀

Portugal definitely you need to send Conan to Tel Aviv, one hundred percent, with the right staging, his voice will definitely be incredible live, you’ve got an outstanding artist since Salvador, This song already is one of my favourites, you got a vote from Me in the UK when this gets to the final, incredible Portugal.

Conan has to win.
There are a few great songs this year and i wouldn’t mind some of them representing Portugal, such as Calema or Filipe Keil, but Telemoveis definetily stands out.

wow I am so surprised, already, by the song Telemoveis, there must be so many great songs for Portugal this year, but hearing this song once I am absolutely stunned by this song, this ethnic elements, and his voice is absolutely incredible. I haven’t heard the other songs so they may be great as well, but already I feel Portugal needs to send Conan to tel Aviv, and maybe they could get their 2nd win after 2 years, this song is outstanding congrats Portugal from the UK

I like the lyrics of “A Dois” and “O Jantar”. ” Telemóveis” sounds interesting and it’s very remarkable, the lyrics is kinda strong.

Conan, Clema, NBC or Matay. I think Conan will be a great song in Eurovision and who knows…the winner!:)

Festival da Cancao isn’t among my favourite NF’s. Hoewever, this year there are several songs I like. I haven’t heard the songs for a while, so I don’t quite remember. The thing I remember is that I had a positive general impression.

Conan Osiris for the win, obviously. The Semi, the Final, ESC, the World. NBC can win the other Semi.

Conan all the way! I don’t care if it will give Portugal a good result in May or not. “Telemóveis” is just this amazing melting pot of cultural influences that pretty much sums up what Portuguese culture is made of: Arabic, Gypsy, African, all mixed up with a taste of fado and folk. Plus: clever weirdo lyrics. Plus: queer performer. Salvador was great, but Conan represents what modern Portuguese music is all about nowadays. So please, Portuguese friends, don’t screw this up, and vote for Conan!

For my taste, Festival de Canção is the best national final so far this year. I absolutely love Conan and Filipe Keil and have both on heavy rotation, but like most of you, I think the more daring choice would be the better one here, because Conan will definitely stand out whatever happens elsewhere. If I have the opportunity, I will definitely watch the semi-finals this year, I am so curious how these and all the other songs will sound live. If I could make a wish, I’d like Dan Riverman, Soraya Tavares and Surma to advance to the finals… Read more »

Conan is so addictive…I guess we have a winner. If staged right, ESC could go back to Portugal next year.

Semi 2 is really weak compared to the first one.

The winner will surely come from the Semi 1

Conan will win anyway, the public likes him and I know some members of the jury that really like Conan song.

My qualifiers from semi one would be: Conan, Matai, Filipe and Ana Cláudia. But Calema will probably make it and I’m perfectly fine with that.

From semi 2: NBC, Madrepaz, Mariana and Surma.

For me, Portugal have a good chance of a great result in Israel with Conan. If staged well this can go VERY HIGH. But if Calema or NBC (or even Filipe Keil) are chosen I wouldn’t mind too.I really like those songs.

NBC will certainly have an impactful live performance. The lyrics are strong and he has such a good pronunciation of words, that it will help to convey the message.

The jury will almost certainly select Conan, my biggest fear is the vote of the public. Remember that Salvador was not the most voted by the televote in the national final.

Telemoveis could win Eurovision. Hope your jurys are not going to vote in a stupid way – or the public just for 2 teens. You have a big chance, don’t screw it up guys.

I really enjoyed most of these songs and that rarely happens to me with nat. selections. My top4 would be 1. Conan Osiris, 2. NBC, 3. Felipe 4, Mariana. (and 5. Joao Campos etc… the only one I do not like is Calema, too normal, reminds me in parts of a song competing in hungary’s a Dal…;) )

Festival da Canção in many ways is better than the actual ESC this year. What Héctor, Colin and Weißbrot have all written below are plausible predictions. I honestly wish all the performers to have a great time and fully express themselves on the stage – this is a very special year for the Festival and the musicians are all lucky to be a part of it. 🙂

Interesting NF, the best choice would probably be Conan Osiris’ “Telemoveis”. But almost all of the songs have something especial, some of them are too slow or Portuguese though. My qualifiers:

1st Semifinal:

1. Conan Osíris – “Telemóveis” (7.5/10)
2. Calema – “A Dois” (7.5/10)
3. Filipe Keil – “Hoje” (7.5/10)
4. Anyone

(I agree with the poll)

2nd Semifinal:

1. Surma – “Pugna” (7/10)
2. Lara Laquiz – “O Lugar” (6.75/10)
3. NBC – “Igual a ti” (6.5/10)
4. Anyone

(I agree with this poll too)

So I hope we are right!

Conan Osiris all the way, it’s so left- field and so extremely different from what we usually see from Portugal, that idk if Portugal will choose this. Any which way, I still love this song and for me it’s the stand out winner.
