Assi Azar IGY lgbtq charity

He’s one of Israel’s most beloved television personalities and an advocate for LGBT rights.

And today Assi Azar walked his walk once more, revealing that he will donate his Eurovision 2019 hosting fee to IGY — an Israeli charity that works to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ young people.

Writing on Instagram, he said:

“IGY, the pride youth organisation, is the second home of my LGBT sons and daughters in Israel. Their only way to exist is through donations!”

“This year they have to raise over a million shekels to continue to take care of our youth — the future generation. That’s why I’ve decided to donate all my Eurovision wages — NIS 105,000 [around $30,000].”

“Love you IGY. Big angels who treat small angels.”

Assi’s generosity continues a long tradition that connects Israel’s Eurovision community with LGBT issues. Dana International’s win kickstarted conversations about acceptance of transgender men and women. And, more recently, Netta has repeatedly spoken about her love and devotion to her gay fans, even speaking out during last year’s surrogacy bill controversy.

His donation will help IGY — that’s the Israeli LGBTQ+ Youth Organization (IGY) — continue its good work.

Established in 2002 it works for social change and a more tolerant society. It works directly with LGBTQ+ people aged 13 to 23, offering regular social-educational activities that reminds them they are not alone.

Here’s how the group describes itself on their web site.

“IGY has set itself the goal of working to empower LGBTQ+ youth to create a meaningful role for themselves in society and to encourage them to take part in shaping both their local communities and Israeli society as a whole. The organization’s work in education and social change includes both LGBTQ+ and heterosexual young people.”

Are you loving Assi’s generosity as much as we are? Sound off in the comments box below.

The correct translation should be “LGBT male and female Israeli youth” (and not “for my LGBT sons and daughters”)

the main thing stopping marriage equality in israel is the fact that they only have religious marriages…. either way that’s $30k for the gays, thank you good guy

Its a little more complicated than this. Israel is still torn between religion and modernism. For some parts the country is religious, for other parts it’s modern.

Religious israelis push for religion, Secular israelis (the majority) push for secularism. In religion-oriented topics, like marriage, the religion still rules, and Judaism is still anti homosexuality.

Unfortunately, as long as the government stays like it is today, we’re only going backwards. Let’s all pray that the government will change in April.

as i’m born and living in a country (italy) that still today is heavily influenced by a corrupt, vile, regressive church that has huge impact on our politics, despite the state being secular, i fully understand your point. i hope you get rid of that bs asap. religion should be a personal thing.

Y’all he’s doing it publicly to maintain awareness of the need to further LGBTQIA+ rights in Israel. Yes, the rights of this community are quite liberal. Yes, on a daily basis members of Israeli LGBTQIA+ have much better realities than members of this community in most countries- even some in Europe. However, this community is not yet fully equal in Israel and it is important for people with a platform to use it to promote equality. Love you Assi!!

I know he’s Green Room but I thought it would have paid a bit more, I’m sure Bar especially is getting $$$ for this.

Obviously it’s a great cause, good for him, although i do agree with a comment below, the cynic in me questions his true motivations if he’s doing it as a big, public donation.

He only does it for his image and to gain attention, such an attention-seeker. If I would do it, I would do it without posting it in social media. And to be honest, so much money only for hosting Eurovision green room. Give me the job, I would do it for free.

Ever heard of the ideas of raising awareness to a cause and setting a personal example for people to follow? Even in cases of charity you find a way to be cynical?

$30K to host (or co-host) Eurovision? Wow. I’m sure they all aren’t paid the same. Bar probably a lot more due to name recognition.

It’s also possible there was a behind-the-scenes deal regarding Bar’s tax fraud.
