The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has travelled to Denmark to review the songs competing in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2019. Up first is Teit Samsø with the song “Step It Up”. Can Teit step up to the big stage in Tel Aviv? Read on to find out.

Teit Samsø — “Step It Up”

“Step It Up” reviews

Natalie: It’s been a while since I’ve wanted to punch someone so much. The lyrics are so immature and so gross that I don’t know whether to throw up or just run. The overly try-hard production and Teit’s voice don’t help either. It’s as though he wrote this after watching hours of really terrible porn. I don’t mind songs with sexy undertones at all, but this is far too creepy for me. It has absolutely no class or substance and I can’t get behind it at all.

Score: 2/10

Julian: Teit Samsø is an entertaining artist and so is “Step It Up”. It is like a mixture of modern tones and Bruno Mars’ funky jazz songs. I find it hard to expect a good result at Eurovision though because I don’t know if Teit and his song will be as entertaining live as the studio version. Add some dancers and maybe even dance yourself and I think you’re good to go.

Score: 6/10

Robyn: “Step It Up” is like a reimagining of One Republic’s “Love Runs Out” as a booty song. And it doesn’t quite work. The verses have a soul jangle, the pre-chorus is edgy synthpop and the chorus is disjointed funk — there’s little flow between them. And how many times can one hear Teit proclaim his appreciation of his bae’s hips before it starts to get weirdly repetitive?

Score: 5/10

Florian: For some reason, this track sounds really familiar, thus I’m not sure whether I like it or not. While this isn’t the most original song, it might be able to be staged in a proper way. However, it also sounds quite monotonous and could need a little more variation.

Score: 4/10

Deban: Annoying AF! The instrumentation here may be funky, but its lyrics and repetitive delivery erodes almost all merit. Pseudo-American in tone, and somewhat out of date especially in today’s “me too” climate, “Step It Up” as we hear it has very few redeeming qualities.

Score: 2/10

There is a certain element of parody to this track. Sometimes you just have to sit back and laugh at your own feelings, and I get the sense that this song is trying to do just that. But unless the live choreography is comedy-driven, I don’t see how this could do well at Dansk MGP.

Step It Up – Very repetitive and generic. The part I cringe on the most is when it tries to be more ”deep” and mentions her inner light. Nope, you are a derivative song about shaking booty, no room for deeper feelings here! The rhythm is not that bad and as mentioned, ”funky”, but the repetitiveness and lack of any creativity or finesse in the lyrics department kills it’s chances of being any good. – 3.5/10

These lyrics are disgusting, “I love your lips when you lie” is the most disgusting lyric and to be honest, this is the WORST DMGP SONG IN HISTORY OF THE SELECTION. I rate this song 0/10.

This is a dire selection to rate. You could really just rate the selection as a whole and sum it up as unsatisfactory, which is a charming way to put it.

Well, we’re off to a great start for Denmark (I.e., not).

Out of the Nordic NFS, Denmark seems to be the weakest one. I have a feeling that regardless of which song wins, Denmark may be out out the final this year.

Don’t think there’s any “seems to be” about it. Denmark are picking with one hand tied behind its back this year.

“Natalie: It’s been a while since I’ve wanted to punch someone so much.”. BEST REVIEW EVER XD! This song is indeed terrible.

The lyrics are sort of cringy, not cuz of the theme but come on, some variation would suit this.

However, I enjoy the music a ton. Anyone else get reminded of the verses of “No Roots”? May explain why this is at least very catchy.
