Bem-vindos! The first semifinal of Portugal’s traditional Festival da Canção has concluded tonight. Eight entries competed and gave their all, but only four could punch a ticket to the grand final in Portimão and they are Matay, Conan Osíris, Calema and Ana Cláudia.

The show

As we recall, Portugal hosted the 63rd edition of the Eurovision song contest in Lisbon last May. In a year with a very high quality of songs and slick production at the national final, we can assume that RTP is aiming high again.

The show, which took place in RTP’s studios in Lisbon (and whose stage slightly resembled the Altice Arena stage..) was a grandiose showcase of Portuguese culture, crystal clear vocals and a lot — and we mean a lot — of the classical Portuguese saudade, all hosted by Sónia Araújo and Tânia Ribas de Oliveira.

In this semi final, a total of 8 songs were performed in the following order:

  1. Ana Cláudia – “Inércia”
  2. João Campos – “É o que é”
  3. Soraia Tavares – “O meu sonho”
  4. Calema – “A dois”
  5. Conan Osíris – “Telemóveis”
  6. Ela Limão – “Mais brilhante que mil sóis”
  7. Filipe Keil – “Hoje”
  8. Matay – “Perfeito”

During the (VERY long) interval act, a tribute was held to commemorate Portuguese Eurovision star Maria Guinot, who passed away recently. She previously represented Portugal in Eurovision 1984 with her classic song “Silêncio e tanta gente”.

The results

The four finalists were determined via a combined jury vote and public televote, worth 50% each.

The jury consisted of seven members, including Isaura who composed “O jardim”, Portugal’s entry last year in Lisbon. During the show she spoke about her experience at last year’s Eurovision. The other six jurors were:

  • Julio Isidro – president of the jury
  • Pedro Penim
  • Selma Uamusse
  • Rita Redshoes
  • lvaro Costa
  • Maria João

Matay with his classic ballad “Perfeito” came on top of the voting, getting a total of 22 points: 12 points from the jury and 10 from the public vote. He has delivered a very confident and emotional performance that captivated both the jurors and the public.

Next was Conan Osíris, with his unconventional entry “Telemóveis”, who scored 19 points: 7 from the jury and 12 from the televote. Conan also won our poll and his song has been making waves in Portugal since its release. During his stunning and somewhat extravagant show, he was wearing a gold mask, perhaps to symbolise the Egyptian god Osiris, whose name he has adopted.

In third place third came Calema with “A dois” with 18 points (10 from the jury and 8 from the public) and in fourth was both Ana Cláudia with “Inércia” and João Campos with “É o que é”. According to tiebreak rules, the act with the highest jury score wins. Ana Cláudia received 8 points (versus 6 to João Campos), she won the fourth ticket to the final.

The qualifiers for this evening are:

  1. Matay – “Perfeito”
  2. Conan Osíris – “Telemóveis”
  3. Calema – “A dois”
  4. Ana Cláudia – “Inércia”

And therefore, the four songs leaving the competition are:

  • Ela Limão – “Mais brilhante que mil sóis”
  • Filipe Keil – “Hoje”
  • João Campos – “É o que é”
  • Soraia Tavares – “O meu sonho”

But this ain’t over just yet! Make sure to tune in next Saturday, when another eight songs will battle it out for the last four spots in the grand final that will be held on 2 March. One of them will follow in the footsteps of Salvador Sobral and Claudia Pascoal and become Portugal’s representative at Eurovision.

Do you agree with the results? Have your favourites qualified? Are you shocked by any result? What do you expect from next week? Tell us in the comment section below!

I hope very much Portugal will be represented by Conan Osíris – his performance, the song, the staging – everything is not only different but extremely good and art that can be appreciated by Eurovision viewers or even taken with enthusiasm – at least I would hope so.

I feel Conan should be picked to represent Portugal for this years Eurovision. 2017 they already won with a beautiful jazz number by the amazing Salvador, and last year they came in 26th with a beautiful ballad (honestly they didn’t deserve to be placed that low)…If they choose Matay (another ballad) then his song will either stay in the semi (due to ppl not voting him out of spite) OR if somehow Matay does make it through the final..then I think it will be last again. Sorry Portugal I love y’all but….y’all can’t be sending ballads after ballads after ballads….it… Read more »

I don´t think the mask was Greek inspired, the bottom part was clearly as a pharao beard style, so Egyptian (Osiris) should be. The stairs were part of the lyrics, simple. The shoes are a tie with the contemporary, a kind of: “this is an over the top performance but I’m relatable, I’m like you people”.

Osiris is the best choice due to the unique sound, but the staging is very special and i am not sure Europe will like it. I expect people to make memes and make fun of it, and thus ignore the actual song. I hope they slightly change some elements like the NIKE shows (jesus..) and the half naked guy.

Being a bit agist, no? So the fact that Conan is not 40 makes him a better person? If you’re lucky you will arrive at 40 as well, would you like that people throw stones to you just because of that?…

Still the same: “Earlier I said that Conan’s song is overrated and that it is nothing special but now he is also my favourite” … “I didn’t know that he is so young, I thought he is 40 years old lol”. “This reads as Before he was overrated, I thought we was 40. Now that I know he is young, he is great.” This for me is ageism.

The entries by Matay and Conan are really interesting songs and either song would be a good choice for Portugal. My personal favourite would be Conan as it is more diverse and I like the songs that offer something different or new. Saying that, Matay would be a respectable and strong ESC entry.

Excellent! The juries clearly recognized Matay’s classy performance and didn’t go along with the circus from that clown Osiris or whatever. He sang terribly by the way, and his entire performance was a mess.
I hope the juries water down his chances further in the final, so either Calema or Matay can represent Portugal instead as they deserve.

R.I.P. Maria Guinot! “Silencio e tanta gente” is my personal favorite from 1984 and I consider this song to be a masterpiece.

Portugal, choose wisely. Last year you had a free pass to the final and it was a tea break song.

I know lots of people keep saying that the melody in the live performance and in the studio sound completely different. But I have a hard time noticing it and find it odd that I can’t seem to notice what others see it. The only thing that sticks out is that it’s live. So it’s not gonna the exact same as something that’s been produced and cleaned up. But still think it sounded good. After seeing the results it seems it will be hard to beat Matay. I figured that the jury would love it but the fact that he… Read more »

I agree with you that Matay’s performance was almost flawless and it would be an ok entry for Portugal. But on the regional juries not so much. Fortunately, for the last two years the regional juries are really modern/indie performers, producers, commercial Radio DJ’s or music journalist from the Portuguese national scene, with more or less vague connections with the region they’re representing (except from the jury from Norte, possibilly). They’re no longer the local music teachers, as they once were. So, I hope that Conan still have a chance to crowl up to second or third place.

Well there is still hope for Conan to even finish jury #1 in the finale. Jury will have a larger panel. Remember last year Catarina Miranda came in 3rd place in the jury of the 1st SF and happened to be the #1 of the regional juries. If he come #2 in jury he also has big chances because he will mostly finish #1 in the televote. If Conan doesn’t win the FdC it will be the biggest crime of this ESC 2019 and Portugal will say bye-bye to the grand final instead of being a contender for the victory… Read more »

The qualifiers really deserved it. I’m a bit sad for Felipe Keil, he tried to do something different with “Hoje”, but it didn’t work live. I don’t really get why Matay won the SF. He looks like a nice guy and his vocals are impressive and he actually deserved to qualify, but that’s all. Unfortunely, the jury tried to bury Conan Osiris. It’s true his vocal performance needs to be tweak, but it is still the crearly standout. As the jury voting is going to be totally different in the final I hope it changes.

Well I can only echo what many of you have said. Conan should deliver the harmonies as he wrote them because there is much going on in the song. Also the vocals where too overwhelming. The song does not breath. For me the staging was messy. With no objective and no focus. The dancer was good but the whole thing didn’t work out for me and came across very amateurish. My thoughts on the result. Matay took the jury votes with a nice delivery. Performing last also helped. I am biased at this song, I really really really don’t like these Disney like songs. I am concerned if this wins, it will have the same faith as “Tu cancion” and it won’t even qualify. And if it does, it would also discourage contemporary songs in following editions of the RTP festival… (as if the festival is not oldfashioned enough…) Conan came second, being the most popular among the public. I insist that the whole level of the Portuguese NF is very average. The songs are actually very mediocre, but fans suddenly love anything Portugal does. Last year so many people insisted that O Jardim was a masterpiece that would bring the second in a row victory for Portugal.
Conan was just a laughable thing that wants to be weird for just being weird. There is no actual song with a minimum of coherence there.

I am disappointed in Conan Osiris! I like the song a lot as it is he doesn’t need to improvise all the time, he needs to stick to the melody. As for the staging, it’s a bit messy. As it is, it won’t win the Festival and it’s a shame.

Conan should keep the same melody as the original, I think that’s the reason the jury only gave 7 points to Telemóveis

This video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSjtLcTU5So) combines both the live and studio version, it sounds good but you can really see the different melodies at times.

I hope Conan will sing the original melody in the final.

Yep. In the final, Portugal will compile all the points from the regional juries first to determine the average rankings of all competing songs. Then they will each be given 10 sets of points totalling fifty-eight that make up the juries’ share of the over-all points. The public will also have 58 points to hand out. For example, if Conan is the jury favorite, he gets 12 points, and Calema who ranks second receives 10. If the public ranked Conan as second and gave him 10 while Calema was given 12. So they’re overall score are both 22 and 22… Read more »

The best performances made to the final (though the jury had to save Ana Cláudia). I’m with all of you guys that said that Conan NEEDS to stick to the melody. There’s a lot going on in his track, any small detour can be distracting. His staging was OK, I was worried that it could be too extravagant, but they kept it together. Since the jury will be different, there’s no reason to worries for now, the televoting result was very ecouraging to #telele. Matay was just perfect (pun intended) and Calema did a good job.

For the love of Osiris, drop the backing vocalists or find the new ones – I couldnt focus on the song because of those cringy “ughs”. Its hard to describe the performance, I expexted some wild dances, I like it unless its him who does so. Seems like the jury was not convinced enough, me neither. Nonetheless #telemoveis is still a good choice for Portugal, everyone is playing their A game and showing some more or less edgy sounds, let them be a part of it too 🙂

I watched this one. There were a few interesting things that happened: – Conan Osiris’s vocal performance did not match the recorded track in some places. He was singing a harmony line at one point, and he also decided not to go for a top note. I am not sure yet whether or not this was deliberate, or if he was unwell. This will no doubt be discussed here by other commenters. – Again about Conan Osiris’s performance, the choreography behind his entry was highly artistic, but to me came across as comical and slapstick. That is true. The problem is that Salvador is much more resourceful singer than Conan and can have the luxury of singing the song differently every time and indeed be magical. Well, Salvador is a much more experienced performer, he even had the opportunity to study music in different countries, it’s natural that he could handle changing a song out of the blue better than Conan. But everytime you change something people love, you can lose them with the distraction. The good thing is that Conan did it when it was still possible to get away with it. Conan has two problems that Salvador had not:
First, he’s not as mature a performer as Salvador is.
Second, he’s not only the singer, he’s also the author of both the music and the lyrics, so he’s basically 100% in charge, a free wheel with no bossy older sister to call him to reason. Having creative freedom may be a good thing, but sometimes you need someone with their feet on the ground to put things in perspective.

Yes, but Salvador didn’t change the melody of like 70% of the song. It’s a bit too much.

Two of the juries are old and one of them is a jazz singer. I’m kind of worried.

Conan song is the best

But please, he needs to stick to the melody from the studio version…
In addition, the performance is TOO MUCH for my taste, just keep it simple

OMG, will the regional jury sabotage Portugal chances in Tel-aviv by chosing the boring Disney song over the Conan masterpiece.

They got too stuck with Salvador’s speech, they can’t think for themselves.

well, it’s decided, no final for Portugal this year. Not as long as these old farts, I mean, “expert jury” ensure Conan, the only one with more than 0.1% chance of making it to the ESC final, ain’t getting nowhere near the top. God, how do they allow and old idiot who probably doesn’t even have his full mental health in check, and that has 0 music background, be the leader of a jury? What a joke. Congrats RTP, go ahead and make that joke cheesy 1960s garbo ballad win, when you get even lower than Montenegro on the day… Read more »

Oh the old Swedish supramicist fart is back with his angry alias, aka Denis. What is you’re problem with Portugal?. Anyway, for someone that loaths this nation you spend an awful lot of time watching the FdC… Don’t you have enough to chew with the musically poor semi-final of Melfest, which is thousand times less interesting than many other national finals, including FdC

Good for you then, you don’t have to listen to it in the final unless you are a masochist. Why do you listen to FdC a anyway? I sure don’t spend my time with Melodiefestivalen…

I was worried about the televote with ‘telemóveis’ but now I‘m worried that he might not make it bc of the jury

Tasteless juries. Portugal sending Conan and the Holy Trinity is complete:

Italy|Albania|Portugal

Telemóveis is clever, rhythmic and intriguing, but I’d take NBC too.
I think it will be about those two: Telemóveis as the televoting winner and Igual a Ti as the jury winner. I can see both being Top 10 at ESC. Portugal is serving QUALITY!
The first semi-final is shaping up to be the weakest one, so Portugal won’t have much trouble to make it through (if they pick one of those two songs!)

I loved Telemoveis when I first heard the studio version, but Conan was not vocally strong at all live.

He was good vocally the only issue is, he sang the song in another tone instead of going with the melody and vocal arrangement from the studio version
