The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has travelled to Norway to review the songs competing in Melodi Grand Prix 2019. Ten years on from their last win, we are looking for the next Norwegian “Fairytale”. Up next is Adrian Jørgensen with “The Bubble”. Is this bubble blowing up or is it about to burst? Read on to find out.

Adrian Jørgensen — “The Bubble”

“The Bubble” reviews

Florian: This song gets off to an interesting and catchy start, leaving a promising first impression. Unfortunately, the chorus can’t really keep up with what’s been teased in the verses. It quickly transitions into a rather old-fashioned pop ballad. As with many other songs in Melodi Grand Prix this year, this could be a totally respectable effort to send to Tel Aviv, but not enough to stand out from the loads of contestants.

Score: 5.5/10

Pablo: Did Jowst and Mørland really write this song? I could not believe it. “The Bubble” is definitely not my kind of music, so there is already a natural disadvantage on my rankings. I can say it’s well sung, it has interesting lyrics and the anonymous female voice does marginally raise the prospect up from the usual “good boy in love” song. But in the grand spectrum of what MGP is, I don’t feel a jaunty guitar tune has what it takes to properly represent Norway. They can do bigger and better than this.

Score: 3/10

Luis: “The Bubble” hasn’t popped in three minutes. Adrian sings a perfectly pleasant entry, but little to nothing happens that makes it merely interesting. Elevator music, royalty-free background track, you name it. This entry is basically a watered down version of Sheppard. The moment when the female singer begins to sing adds a bit of interest, but five seconds later it’s gone. Very nice but very much not going to Tel Aviv.

Score: 6/10

Renske: “The Bubble” is the type of Scandi-pop song that is recently going out of fashion at Eurovision. Though appealing to younger audiences, as they love themselves some fries, it is nothing new or special. To keep talking about food, this song is a bit of a pancake, as it does not have any peaks. Adrian himself is definitely the highlight of the entry, as his charisma makes me enthusiastic for future entries to come.

Score: 6.5/10

Steinunn: First of all, I am almost shocked by the fact that this song is written by Kjetil Mørland and Aleksander Walmann, as the song does not quite live up to their track record. I‘ve heard this song so many times before and not recently, more like in 2014. It‘s not a bad song per se, it has a familiar vibe and Adrian has a lovely and clear voice, but the song is just not current enough and is certainly lacking Mørland’s signature drama.

Score: 5/10

Bernardo: “The Bubble” is the song you listen on a summer road trip with friends on a TV advertisement. Very pleasant to hear, leaves you in a good mood but is not memorable enough for this type of competition. For the sake of diversity, I’m super glad this is in the mix, but I can’t see it pulling an upset.

Score: 6.5/10

Off-topic: Wiwibloggs is constantly deleting one simple and harmless question in the comment section of the article on Saara Aalto. Can you stop that, please?

This is a winner–but only because its running order is 9th.

The music matches the lyrics perfectly, which is the entire problem in a nutshell. A song about being stuck in a bubble, two broken hearts and searching for the missing part – that is also how I feel about this track. It is very safe (oh, oh, oh). But it will have its fans, and its place in the running order is very beneficial for it. And we know that National Finals have been choising safely recently, so it could be Norway’s shock winner.

If this was sung by Ed Sheeran, you would be giving 9 and 10.

7.25/10 for me.

Forgettable, and ordinary.

The Bubble – I had no idea who wrote it up until now, but I know that I like it a lot. Despite the title, the song is not childish or too cheesy. He sings it in a way it comes off as sincere and very sentimental. It’s simple, but quite effective. – 8/10

Interestingly, it doesn’t let me edit my comment after less than 3 minutes. It’s set to 15 on Wiwibloggs now. Not that I would edit this one here, but I just wonder is it a glitch, or the change? I hope it’s a glitch, because being able to edit, even if for only 15 minutes, is one of the best new features.
EDIT: Okay, I answered my own question. 12 minutes, still able to edit. But better check how often that glitch might happen and how to stop it. Thanks.

Could this be what JOWST sent to You Decide?

Take the songwriters out and this is one of the most uninspired and unexciting songs in the selection. If Norway ended up with this, I would be really surprised.
