He’s the iconic DJ who is representing Finland at this year’s Eurovision. Teaming up with The Giant Leap’s Sebastian Rejman on vocals, Darude has released all three songs with which he is aiming for Eurovision glory. We can now set our sights on Saturday’s final of UMK 2019, which is being held in Turku.

Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman – “Release Me”

The production here is rich — and the lyrics pack a punch too. This ain’t no love song y’all, as Sebastian pleads for his lover to let him go. “I don’t want to waste our precious time / ‘Cause we’re not getting any younger now” — that cuts deep!

But with the vocals Sebastian’s got on show here, we wouldn’t want him out of our lives either. There’s moments where the track threatens to overshadow the vocals though, particularly towards the climax. Of course, we won’t know how that will come across live until UMK itself.

Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman – “Superman”

“Superman” is an uplifting song, where Sebastian sings of a person who makes him feel “like a superman”. He sings to a person who holds an important place in his life, someone who is there to help him be the best person he can be.

The chorus builds up with the strong hook, “‘Cause only you can make me fly like I’m Superman”, building up a memorable refrain.

The song also features little electronic flourishes that may remind fans of Darude’s iconic single “Sandstorm”. It serves as a reward for long-term fans of Darude and a reminder of his substantial career as a producer.

Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman – “Look Away”

The song is a little unpredictable and surprises the listener with its sudden turns. The calm yet powerful beginning builds up steadily towards the chorus which turns “Look Away” into a dance club song. Right after the chorus, it drops again into a serious, slower undertone. Darude is serving up many flavours!

Through this song, Darude and Sebastian want to wake up people to focus and make a difference in the world. The music video also emphasises global problems that affect all of our lives, as we see people from different cultures, surrounded by various landscapes and weather conditions.

Which song should win Finland’s UMK 2019?

So which song do you think should win UMK 2019? Have your say in our poll. You can vote for as many of the three songs as you like. However, don’t forget, you can vote only once, so make it count!

I don’t like any of them, and that’s a rarity for me. I’ve always enjoyed the Finnish selection as there’s always been something I’ve loved. This year they’ve got weak, generic EDM music that sounds like it’s from the mid 2000’s. Not good. I don’t see them making it through to the final with any of these.

Of these, I see “Look Away” as the weakest entry, whereas “Superman” may actually create a huge party in the arena in Tel Aviv and leave a good impression to the public all over Europe. Of all three, “Superman” was the only song I felt somewhere inside me, giving me some kind of a positive vibe and making me move around.

I think I like Superman slightly more than the other two, but overall I just feel quite indifferent to all of them. I still hope they’ve put some effort into the staging and that the show somehow manages to give the songs a boost. Hopefully seeing the whole package can help me make up my mind about which song to vote for.

No final for Finland (?)

Doesn’t really matter since none of them is going to do well. I hope next year we’ll have a proper UMK again with different acts. There’s not enough variety with just one artist and three songs.

Superman has me tied up, so please Release Me and I promise I will Look Away from this entire incident. 😛
All three are electronic dance tracks, so just pick one really. The live shows should be interesting.

I would send “Look Away”, but Finland will struggle anyway, I think.

I like them all but admittedly its the music genre I typically enjoy so I’m biased already.

My friend is inspired by our Makeda: “And it doesn’t matter….even if I… remember the day I loved you most” 😀

Uh, don’t really know. All three songs are quite cheesy, and each of them in a different way. I’ve got a feeling that both “Release Me” and “Look Away” will sound terrible live so I’ll probably opt for “Superman”. I think it’s the only one they can pull off. Overall, the “DJ feat. singer” genre is not really my cup of tea (even though I really liked the Norwegian entry in 2017, but that one had much more substance than any of the three songs above).

It’s sad that all these song featured Sebastian Rejman. I find his voice not enough for winning Eurovision. Would’ve been much nicer if all the three songs featured different singers.

None of the above. Seriously, they are so bland and dated, I can’t even.

All of them are weak. Darude was famous nearly 2 decades ago, in the early 2000…. I don’t understand Finland, they have a gem right under their noses: Mikael Saari, this guy can do so well (Germany 2018 anyone?)… The juries will love him, plus his charisma, well singing and a nice ballad can attract televoters
But noooo, the Finnish television prefered the outdated Darude…. *sigh*

This is one of those polls where you strongly need a “none of the above all of them sick terribly” option. Sincerely, all of these songs are super outdated with terrible lyrics and a very predictable edm sound.

Well, it seems that the only way for Finland to qualify is to invest in a time travel machine and go back to 2013.

I like all 3 songs, but none of them make me very excited. The very problem of this ”contest” is that they are so similar. Same performers, same style, same tempo, slightly different rhythm and lyrics. It’s safe to say Finland won’t be at my very top or very bottom of 2019 no matter what song they pick.
