The grand ginal of Portugal’s Festival da Canção 2019 is upon us. Portimão Arena welcomes the eight finalists but only one of them will hold the trophy and fly to Tel Aviv in May. From Matay’s traditional ballad to Surma’s haunting experimental track, RTP will provide a show for everyone.
We asked you to vote for the act you’d like to see in Israel (and you were VERY clear). With a total of 2,143 votes, the results are in and Conan Osíris is your Portuguese king.
Demolishing is the word to describe this result. “Telemóveis” gathered the preference of 70.56% of our readers. A result like this would be expected in a noncompetitive year of Festival da Canção but not this year. But in a rather competitive year like this, with an increase in quality, Osíris proves he is indeed a phenomenon and a force to be reckon with.
The pop duo Calema come in second with 8.73%. “A Dois” will sure be a radio hit in Portugal but it did not convince a lot of our readers. For some modern, for others generic. One thing is certain. Most people agree it does not have the impact needed for Eurovision.
Surma rounds up the podium with 6.02%. After a show stopping performance in semi-final two, the experimental artist will go toe to toe with Conan Osíris for the non mainstream vote. While that may hurt her in the voting, the one thing we can’t take away from her is this piece of art.
Poll results: Who should win Festival da Canção 2019?
- Conan Osíris – “Telemóveis” 70.56% (1,512 votes)
- Calema – “A dois” 8.73% (187 votes)
- Surma – “Pugna” 6.02% (129 votes)
- NBC – “Igual a ti” 5.04% (108 votes)
- Matay – “Perfeito” 3.69% (79 votes)
- Ana Cláudia – “Inércia” 3.36% (72 votes)
- Mariana Bragada – “Mar doce” 1.49% (32 votes)
- Madrepaz – “Mundo a mudar” 1.11% (24 votes)

Yaaaas, Portugal on my personal top for the third year in a row. My personal favorite.
Conan song wins with the bigest voting ever on Portuguese Festival!
Conan wins!
Oh… Edward Scissorhands 😉
Hes not gonna win though. No fan favourites from national finals are going to tel aviv this year
Oops, mistyped my email on the comment below. I like me better on the green monster version.
I’m confident Conan will top the televote, so he’ll need to be at least 2nd place with the jury or come 3rd and hope that the jury winner doesn’t get 2nd place with the public vote. There are some variables that make it unpredictable: – Different juries. The bad news for Conan is that regional juries may be conservative. The silver lining is that some jurors may feel uncomfortable to rank very low the now confirmed fan favorite even if they aren’t very fond of it. – How much NBC and Matay can harm each other while competing between themselves?… Read more »

You heard the people, Portugal!
Now go and vote! Vote for this man and his incredible song! Vote, I say!
Jeez, judging from votes here, there will be riots if Portugal don’t choose Conan and also Iceland Hatari 😛
I think the real competition will be between Matay and NBC!
Surma has the jury vote behind her but the public will not favor it…and Conan is the opposite
Very unfortunately, this is my prediction as well. 🙁
I hope final juries have a better taste than those in semis
WOW, it’s clear what people want! I would love to see Conan in Eurovision. Portugal come on, give us what we want! 🙂
Conan’s song isn’t a song which could to win on Eurovision but would be high ranking.
This title needs to add: and could possibly win ESC. Although tbh their hosting was pretty lame, 4 ladies and noone where nearly as charming as the two guys from Ukraine a couple years ago.
Conan deserves to go. We all need him in TLV.
Why does everybody seems to like this Song… i try, but i really struggle with finding the beauty in this Song… is it because og the lyrics? Is there a deep mening with this Song? I’m so confused…. because as it is now, I really really dislike the Song. But please, tell me anything good about this Song.. and maybe I will get to understand the hype. 🙂
Well, it’s not everymen’s state. You shouldn’t force yourself to like it. Especially if you are not into afro-beat (like kuduro) or eastern european chanting then it’s hard for you to like it.
Ofc I shouldn’t force myself. But I like to give the songs a chance. F.ex. the albanian enten for this year was really not for me when it got released. After understanding her lyrics and listen a few times I got to appreciate it, and let it be one of the songs I like the best this year. But this song is still annoying and repetative to me, and then I find it strange when do many people here just praise Conan. I’ve watched the video with Deban and William and I still dont understand the hype. But thanks for… Read more »
William and Deban will make you understand the song BRILLIANTLY! Just click on the link below. Enjoy! 😉

Conan for the win!!!
He’s the only chance for Portugal to not become a one-hit wonder like Finland(win once after years of flopping and then never see the top 10 again)
ye
I like the “frogs in a swamp” sound.
That dancer was owning the stage better than the lead singer!
Naturally, he doesn’t have to sing! :p
Conan… And simply this song is just…. GREAT… Do not even bother if it comes last in Eurovision… It IS simply outstanding….. Obrigado, Conan (by the way, Italy’s is beyond boring and the Hatary guy…. really????? ( just noise and the sexual bds thing…. really??????
Conan’s song is kinda weird, unique, it sounds like a tribal incantation. It has a hypnotic quality, which makes it unusual and hard digestible. It transcends worlds, it’s profound and memorable. But my question is: how many people would understand and appreciate such song? It deserves to win because I love diversity, but for me Telemoveis is a visual song , and not one that I’d like to listen to the radio.
Long story short: well done, Portugal!
We should brace ourselves for Conan to get Green Booked on Saturday I’m afraid, I can’t see regional juries ranking him high if he had the 2nd lowest score from jury for the semifinal qualifiers. Looks like Matay or NBC will represent Portugal, my 2 favorites in FdC this year are Surma & Ana Claudia.
Yes the deserving favourite, Conan is the only song ive listened too and instantly had on repeat over and over, the only one who could get Portugal a second win, if everything goes well on the night, cant wait until he wins.
Slightly off-topic: Can I just say that I really enjoy watching Festival da Canção these past three editions?
The intimate semifinal studio stage took some getting used to but the overall package is very admirable. Most of all I love their motion graphics package and the theme song that comes with it (Courtesy of Paulo Dos Passos of RTP who create the intro et al).
If only there’s a way to know who composed the theme and if it can be listened in full.
Here’s the video of the 2017 FDC intro: https://vimeo.com/217458747
I agree and I would add the fact that it’s a show that shows a lot of respect to songwriters. They’re invited to come up with songs (so, a big sign of trust in their work), they pick the artist that will sing and on previous years they were even highlighted on the intro videos, telling the audience what the song is about and why they picked that particular performer to defend their work.
He is the only one who could take Portugal to final.
Actually, I truly believe Surma, NBC, Calema and Matay would likely qualify. Conan is the only possible top 5 finish, though.
I’m looking forward to vote on conan Osíris in TLV. ??? Kisses from Switzerland
