The National Selection season of Eurovision 2019 has had more than its fair share of drama already. So you can imagine how happy it made everyone here at Wiwibloggs to watch LUME‘s video diary accounting their experience at O melodie pentru Europa. Even though things didn’t go to plan — and they were axed from the process — they’ve picked themselves up, had a laugh at the situation, and put a smile on our faces in the process.

The video tells the story of why they decided to send a song to the Moldovan selection (who wouldn’t want a free holiday to Tel Aviv?), their budget restrictions which meant they couldn’t quite get Philipp Kirkorov on board, and their travels across Chisinau to the first stage of the O melodie pentru Europa selection on February 2nd.

Keep your eyes peeled until the end of the video, because our very own William and Deban make an appearance!

The Wiwibloggs duo couldn’t quite believe LUME didn’t make it to the final, much like the rest of the Internet who couldn’t get enough of the track “Ca Adriano Celentano”. Though they might not have the ticket to Tel Aviv, LUME are still smiling. They’re fully booked for birthday parties and weddings until 2020, y’all!

Jokes aside, this video captures the real Eurovision spirit that seems to have been forgotten over the past week. LUME have wonderful showmanship and they aren’t afraid to laugh at themselves or acknowledge when things could have gone better. Let’s hope this positive attitude will keep them motivated to send another song next year, so we may finally see them in the O melodie pentru Europa final, and perhaps on the Eurovision stage. Chisinau 2021?

What do you think? Did LUME’s Eurovision journey bring a smile to your face? Are are you still crying into your wine glass because we won’t be seeing them in Tel Aviv? Let us know in the comments section!

Would have actually made the top 10. Oh well, I guess Moldova wants a more boring safe song… sigh.

Lightning round for the rest: 51. Sweden 1991 – Fangad av en stormvind (7/10: See #50. Also, am I the only one who thinks Israel was better than either one of the tied songs?) 52. Azerbaijan 2011 – Running Scared (7/10: Rigged? Who knows? But in any case, this is a perfectly fine song that isn’t even remotely of winner caliber.) 53. Latvia 2002 – I Wanna (7/10: Not an amazing song by any stretch, but compared to everything else that year, it was a well-earned win/) 54. UK 1976 – Save Your Kisses for Me (7/10: Very cute and… Read more »

Russia won only thanks to the diaspora voting, it wasnt fair. Thats why EBU brought the juries back to the contest in 2009.

I’ve got nowhere else to share this, but here is, in my opinion, every Eurovision winner from best to worst. People will disagree with me, but whatever. Just felt like sharing (the Toto Cutugno mention got me thinking). 1. Norway 1995 – Nocturne (10/10: My favorite Eurovision song, ground-breaking and unique. Never been replicated.) 2. Portugal 2017 – Amar pelos dois (10/10: Subtle, atmospheric, and nostalgic without being antiquated) 3. Sweden 1974 – Waterloo (10/10: Obvious, sure, but a groundbreaker not just for Eurovision but for pop music in general. Literally wrote an 11-page essay on it. It’s good.) 4.… Read more »

11. Sweden 2012 – Euphoria (10/10: While I may not be as huge a stan of this song as other fans, lord knows I understand why it won as handily as it did.) 12. Sweden 2015 – Heroes (10/10: Still one of the high water marks for Eurovision staging. Italy and Russia were wonderful as well, but for the ideal combination of staging and song, this one takes the cake.) 13. Denmark 1963 – Dansevise (10/10: The first really modern Eurovision winner. The run of winners between 63-65 was exemplary, and each did a lot to push the contest forward.… Read more »

21. Netherlands 1957 – Net als toen (10/10: I’m a little surprised it’s this high as well, but something about it is so pretty and nostalgic that I keep coming back to it.) 22. Switzerland 1988 – Ne partez pas sans moi (10/10: Weird outfit and bizarrely close finish aside, this is the kind of song that Eurofans will remember for ages to come, regardless of its performer’s subsequent rise in stature. It’s just damn good.) 23. Israel 2018 – Toy (10/10: Our most recent champion, and deservedly so. Defiantly, proudly different, it stood out from the crowd and made… Read more »

31. Switzerland 1956 – Refrain (9/10: The first winner ever. Still a simple, nostalgic song. I like old music, especially old jazz ballads, so I vibe with it.) 32. Greece 2005 – My Number One (9/10: Just a spectacular performance at its center. Greece and Cyprus have tried to recapture that lightning in a bottle many times over, but this is still as good as it gets.) 33. Israel 1978 – A-Ba-Ni-Bi (9/10: A profoundly stupid song, but definitely catchy. Its very frequent presence in my Jewish family’s life might be elevating it for me.) 34. Denmark 2000 – Fly… Read more »

41. Norway 1985 – La dette swinge (8/10: Very cheesy, but Bobbysocks are so charming and the song’s role in ending Norway’s notorious losing streak make me a fan.) 42. Ireland 1992 – Why Me? (8/10: See #37) 43. Luxembourg 1961 – Nous, les amoureux (8/10: I dunno, something about this one is intriguing. The slinky orchestral arrangement, his understated vocals. Stands out in a way similar songs don’t.) 44. Israel 1998 – Diva (8/10: Didn’t care for this song for a while, but repeated listens and appreciation for how ground-breaking it was at the time elevated it high in… Read more »

Somehow the last two posts disappeared. So…maybe I’ll get to the rest again? Maybe? All I’ll say is the songs don’t dip below 7/10 until #52 or so and Believe is last.

They need to pick some other random Italian 80s heroes. What about Ca Toto Cotugno? 🙂

I like them, but not with this song. I hope they make a better one and try next year.

LUME will not be in Tel Aviv. Another crime in this cursed year. I’m afraid of Super Saturday tomorrow.

It hasn’t been a good year for fan favorites. It’s like 2019 is cursed or something.
