The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — continues to rate and review the songs competing in the grand final of Sweden’s Melodifestivalen 2019. Next up, we listen to newcomer Malou Prytz with “I Do Me”. Did we love her popaliciousness?

Angus: An ancient proverb says that with age comes wisdom. Well, with youth comes sass. “I Do Me” is an effervescent punch in the face with attitude and energy which nobody expected. The staging is smart, Malou sounds great and she brings a wonderful snark to stage. The impact of Ace Wilder and Isa’s mentoring is everywhere in the performance, and yet it doesn’t feel derivative. This is a potent slice of Swedish pop music and may surprise again in Stockholm.

Antranig: Malou has burst onto the Swedish music scene with an incredible debut. With strong vocals and lots of energy, this came out of nowhere to become a genuine contender at Melfest. Ace Wilder and Isa may be behind it but I’m getting more shades of Margaret in her performance. “I Do Me” could use a bit more movement on stage to give it more of a wow factor but Malou Prytz has already made a name for herself and there’s no reason this can’t go all the way.

Cinan: Melfest always gives us really good staging performances, this one by Malou is also one of these great stagings. The song is really good and I can already hear it on the radio in Sweden and Europe. But I can’t find that special thing that I would love every new song to have, especially a song that might be sent to Eurovision. I like the way Malou sings the song — it lifts the performance. I wish her good luck!

Florian: With her television debut at Melodifestivalen, Malou is taking a big risk. However, with Ace Wilder in the back, there’s a strong team behind this entry. She can definitely work on her live vocals, but we might see a new Zara Larsson here. The Spotify-friendly track surely resonates well with younger viewers and the performance is well executed. In order to be a contender for Tel Aviv, this does need some more tweaking here and there.

Luis: Malou does herself and it works fantastically. While her entry may not be the most exciting pop tune ever, she adds the sass, the fun and the quirky staging and there you go, direkt till final! It’s undeniable that her youth and being relatively unknown are facts that run against her chances, as “I do me” is not a distinctive enough song, but Malou can be very proud of what she will achieve in the final.

Ron: “I Do Me” sounds like a very generic and repetitive teen pop song. It’s cute, but there’s nothing really special or exciting about it. Malou is cute as well and she did quite a good job with the delivery of the song, yet it doesn’t really do (it for) me. Is it the all-female team behind the song or the Zara Larsson resemblance that got it to the final — or am I missing something?

Thanks for wanting to know our opinion and reading our reviews. I really appreciate that. Still, these people up there are the reason this site runs and they try their best. I don’t agree with them all the time either (I find many songs quite underrated or overrated), but I read their reviews and respect what they do.

A matter of taste, but for me, is the worst song in this year’s final
Even though I don’t think she’s gonna win, I still think Malou is a promising artist. Maybe she should try for an alternative route and take on the steps that Zara Larsson took to become an international artist.

Very underestimated by many
Most underrated song in this year’s Melfest, a cute catchy contemporary pop song and I’m still thrilled for Malou who went direkt til finalen unexpectedly, gotta love surprises rather than the boring predictable outcomes. the staging is brilliant as it mainly resembles the 1996 comedy classic Clueless. When I was Malou’s age(15) I began obsessing with 80s pop culture and it gives me hoping seeing teens today hooked on 90s music + films.
I think we have a Mello winner here, just not the 2019 one. I liked her, she’s talented and got spark and what it seems a hint of charisma, she just needs to grow up, get some experience an refine her talents. See you at Eurovision 2030 girl!
Probably the song I’ve returned to most from this years Melodifestivalen, though not the most refined. She needs to work on not running out of breath to be able to sing confidently when she is dancing (shades of Asanda from the UK selection last year) but no doubt she has a good voice, the song is catchy, and the staging is fun, and I’d be delighted to see her win.
I Do Me – When she came on stage, one thing was on my mind – This is for Descendants 3 soundtrack! 🙂 It’s a hyperactive teen dance number which is both generic and infectious in it’s energy. Malou is absolutely great on stage, giving it the performance it needs. I hope she is a rising star. – 7/10
She’s probably the most promising debutant this year amongst the sea of veterans. Pretty sure we’ll be seeing her return in the future!

Dear native English speakers, what does ‘you do you, i do me’ mean? It doesn’t mean anything to me.
It’s a sort of saying as means to say “you do what you want” or “it’s fine with me”. A way to not agree or to politely disagree and you going with your own decision
Basically, “you look after your life, I’ll look after mine”
Basically something along the lines of letting someone do whatever they want for themselves, while you do your own thing for yourself.
Of course this is not winning but she was impressive! For now, she should just enjoy the experience of the final. Hopefully, she’ll come back with a less glib entry in the future.
