Katerine Duska Better love

We’re feeling pink tonight, thanks to Greece’s Katerine Duska! The Canadian-born singer has been dropping hints of her Eurovision entry all week. And tonight, the secret was revealed: here’s her “Better Love”!

The Greek entry was premiered during a special show on ERT 2, which presented the channel’s new programming. After a lot of talking, Katerine jumped on stage before her song was presented.

You can watch the song at around 1:37:01 of this Facebook stream.

“Better Love” is an ethereal power ballad with heavy pop production. Katerine’s vocals go from fragile to strong in microseconds ahead of the chorus, soaring at just the right moments.

We’re getting vibes of Florence and the Machine, mixed in with some Paloma Faith. It’s a move away from the traditional notes of “Oneiro Mou”, but could that be a good move for Greece’s chances?

The whole thing is packaged with a stunning music video, with Katerine looking stunning in an intricate pink number. Tulle for days! “Sophistication” is the word here.

Earlier this week, Katerine had uploaded a short but intriguing clip to her Instagram. It features an image of a person with long wavy hair being stroked by another person wearing a long, white mesh glove and a large pearl ring.

If you need a vibe for the video — that alone says it all!

What is “Better Love” about?

The “Better Love” lyrics are powerful, and don’t shy away from the intensity — and dare we say “madness” — that comes with love. Katerine speaks of all-consuming feelings — the “burning feeling inside” — and learning to deal with the heat. Yes, there’s pain, but there also gain. Sometimes you have to burn to be reborn.

The theme works on multiple levels. For some the song will no doubt reflect the sensation of diving into an intense relationship. For others the text may resonate for invoking the adversity of a relationship. At times she’s “holding on for dear life” and she simply can’t hide it.

There’s even a case to be made for tensions stirred by those outside the relationship. As she sings: “Let them look, don’t know, don’t care, go deep with me.”

“Better Love” has Greek-British musician Leon of Athens and Scottish singer-songwriter David Sneddon on its composing team, as well as the Montreal-born representative herself.

Sneddon may be best known as the winner of the first series of Fame Academy — the BBC’s 2002 version of the Operación Triunfo franchise. But Sneddon has years of experience under his belt, both as a solo artist and as a songwriter, having worked with artists such as Hurts, Lana del Rey and Jessica Mauboy.

What do you think about “Better Love”? Are you feeling better after hearing it? How do you feel about Greece’s chances? Do you think they’ll be back in the final? Tell us in the comment section below!

Great great great!! Beautiful voice, interesting sound. I think it’s one of these songs you have to see live to appreciate it more. I hope they do a good job with the staging. Thank God Greece chose to be different! Good luck!

When they told me that Greece, yes Greece finally had a good Eurovision song I would not believe it. They told me I would eat my words. They told me I would like the song so much I would pack my bags and move to Crete. ….
Let me tell you this.. I will not be moving to Greeve, especially not to listen to some lady in a fancy gown sing a Jess Glynn song. How dissapointed but unsurprised I was.

When this plays on stage in May I will insert the headphones and listen to Demis Rousos. Thank you.

I like it. I prefer when Greece send something a little more traditional but this is ok. I think it now all comes down to the staging, if they get it right this could easily be a top 5 song depending on how her live vocals sound. Portugal is still my favourite, followed by Italy and Greece now in 3rd for me.

And that goes straight to my #2!! I love what Greece proposes most of these last years (even though sometimes songs don’t translate well on stage) and this is no exception. I have big expectations for the staging but whatever happens, thank you for that music <3

I do like this, but I have to give it a few more listens. What I don’t yet understand is, why they don’t showcase her lower register more, because that is really where the strength of her voice lies (I’m with Loin d’ici on this one). Listen to the first verse, when she sings “Everything they want from us” and when subsequently they wrote her a low version of the pre-chorus. That is really powerful, she sounds like a velvety Amy Winehouse. In the second verse however, the pre-chorus is pushed an octave higher. I understand that they wanted to… Read more »

I just heard the song and I just have one question.

How will this stack up against the more unique entries from other countries? (Think Iceland, Portugal, etc.)

Loin dici
Guest

Staging. A success at staging might bring miracles like Moldova last year.

Andreas

For many people Iceland has a bad song and Portugal has a messy one. They are unique but not good for me either.
So the Greek song can stand

Kirby

Beautiful video. Her “voice colour” is unique. Juries may love it, not so sure about the televote. Definitely not a top-5 and not a top-10. It may rank between 11th and 20th places. I have a feeling it may receive a reception as “X My Heart” did last year. I agree it might do better than Cyprus, though.

I don’t understand why people are trying to find something wrong.. either you like it or not. That’s it. To put so much hate to an artist who gives her all to a song, it’s just disgusting.. I personally like it, I have it on repeat and I m enjoying it. Simple as that. #GetALife

I LOVE it – it’s like Katy Perry went indie pop. The song is fresh and radio friendly, but it’s not too much of an “obvious” Eurovision entry. This could bring Greece back to where they used to be.

I see a potential top 5 and a potential jury winner. Unless they completely mess up staging, this may do even better than Cyprus. Congratulations neighbors, this is friggin amazing.

I think it’s a nice song, don’t get me wrong!!! But I’m not a fan of her voice… It’s different, I give it that. And I don’t think her voice fits this sort of song….maybe something more jazz-y idk. It’s not a winner in my eyes but I can see why a lot of people may like this!

I’m just sending a prayer than San Marino has an amazing song. I’m begging them to bring it on. As it stands, I can already see nine or so songs from the first semi that stand a very good chance at the final (Greece definitely being one of them), but San Marino hangs in the balance. I already know at least one song I really like will probably go home, and I’m hoping it isn’t them. And, San Marino being San Marino, I don’t want to get my heart broken again.

My god, San Marino… I’m so worried because I really want to see them in the final, but can’t keep my hopes up with Serhat. Can’t we give them a ticket straight to the final? Otherwise my heart will break as well :c

Katerine’s voice is so special that she would find fans even if she was singing the phone book. I guess we have an Aisel situation here: a skilled alternative performer singing something mainstream and very well produced. It’s not what I wanted, but the results are much better this time. The ethereal vibe gives it character and while I always felt Aisel’s vocals were underused, this song really allows Katerine to shine. The juries will love it and good staging can make it happen for the televote too. I believe it’s a grower.

I hear a bit of ‘Anything Could Happen’ by Ellie Gouldng in the background vocals during the chorus. Now that I finally had a chance to listen to the song on a proper equipment. I like it.

Loin dici
Guest

This is another good jury song. I don’t really see much potential from the televotes but it could be a possibility to have it high on the televote scoreboard. For my taste, this is good, maybe just too much high-register hooks? Everything else is fine by me.

This is the first “Western” sounding pop song Greece has produced that could, in theory, receive airplay in English speaking countries.

Up ’till now, Greece’s “Western” sounding songs consisted of “This is Love,” “This Is The Night” and “One Last Breath”–nothing that a self-respecting DJ would ever put on the air (or, in the case of “One Last Breath,” no current DJ, since the song probably could have been popular if released back in the 1980s).

I think it’s a great choice for Greece! Hopefully the live performance will be strong.

Not a winner but a really, really good song. Probably the best of the internal selections so far. As others have said, this just really suits her voice for some reason. However, that music video has to go. I hate everything about that.

Why does this give me A Star Is Born-vibes? Really feels like a quality entry – but let’s wait for the live version, I can’t imagine that the part starting from 2:33 is going to work in any possible way. If she and the backing vocalists do, however, sing well, the juries are going to love it, it’s definitely something that appeals to those who also liked Austria 2018.
