It’s still a long two months until Eurovision, but the bookmakers’ favourite to win Eurovision 2019 — the Netherlands, represented by Duncan Laurence — already has a plan ready for hosting Eurovision 2020 in case of a win.

Those who know something of the Dutch work ethic will probably know that the Dutch are always prepared and quite punctual when it comes to organising an event. Eurovision in Concert regularly slays, right?

Well, a spokesperson for the NPO, the parent organisation of all public broadcasters in the Netherlands, has told RTL Nieuws that a generic scenario to host Eurovision has been in the drawers of the public broadcaster for several years now.

“There is a scenario concerning the outline, but we will only start working with it after the Netherlands has won the final.”

Who would pay for a Dutch Eurovision 2020?

The Netherlands has perhaps one of the most confusing and complex public broadcaster structures in Europe, which needs some explanation.

As a result of extreme divides in society at the time of the surge of television in Europe, called pillarisation, the Dutch public broadcaster became a union of several broadcasters with those broadcasters each having their own political or spiritual identity. This was to give every part of society broadcasting time.

The two broadcasters which came together to form AVROTROS originally had more of a liberal stance, but as with many broadcasters, this stance has become less and less visible as time has gone on. Nowadays, the amount of broadcasting time is allocated by the amount of members each broadcaster has.

As the NPO is the parent organisation of AVROTROS, it will mainly be the NPO that would deal with the finances and the subsidies for Eurovision. The NPO told RTL Nieuws that financing is something that they would obviously discuss with the EBU at a later stage. AVROTROS would, however, still take care of all the creative work in the event of hosting.

The Dutch seem to be fully prepared to take on hosting Eurovision 2020 — if, of course, they manage to win. It’s no surprise they’re keen: They have been waiting to host Eurovision since 1980!

Do you support Duncan Laurence for the win? Or do you think that the Netherlands is rooting for itself a bit too hard? Let us know in the comments box below!

Ok but is this a bad thing tho? I don’t see it as arrogance since they’ve had the idea for some time, and ultimately the best thing for the potential host country to do since we’ve seen some in the recent past struggle. Maybe all countries should do the same just in case?

Wait. For. Staging.

Remember Sennek? Amazing song, voice wasn’t bad in semifinals and she flopped hard because staging was bad. Or Bones from Bulgaria. Same thing – terrible staging. It means a lot. If he’ll have bad staging, he’s not winning a thing. Just because song is good, or even the best one, doesn’t mean it’ll end up first.

Somehow I feel, that many of us have our “dream” location for ESC, ha?
I would like ESC to be hosted by UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary…
and I speak only about the location (not mentioning the songs) and the attitude (no politics, just fun, LGBT fiesta…)

Anyway, this year, if Netherlands win, or Czech Republic win (that wil not happen) I will be happy also because of the song.
😉

Ziggo Dome in our Netherlands would make great place for eurovision, already loads of concerts there by big internationally famous artists

good stage too with nice space for props, and also good graphics for backdrop

a fun contest can save eurovision, no lgbt or political crap, just fun and attention for the song, as it used to be before

so #Amsterdam2020 🙂

I’d be proud to see my country hosting.. but… I know that for now, it would be a mess like in Ukraine and Israel… that’s why I didn’t put Poland on my list.
Public broadcaster is used by politicians mainly for political propaganda and that has nothing to do with professional approch to produce a show like ESC…
Fingers crossed for JESC in Gliwice this November but… well, don’t be be surprised if TVP’s level of production dissapoints you.

…and why did they host in 1980??? Israel won in 1979 but couldn’t host back to back Eurovision so they turn it back to the EBU, which at first wanted to give it to the UK to host but they’ve forfeited it and it went to The Hague in the Netherlands.

Seems like history can be repeated, 40 years later, where the Netherlands will host the year after it is hosted in Israel…(or if Israel wins again and cant host, once again, back to back, and The Hague gets it again 😉 )

the article clearly states that a basic plan of how to stage Eurovision in case of a Dutch win has been around for several years. So that has nothing to do with Duncan or his song. Wiwiblogs has chosen to publish this article because the Dutch entry happens to score well with the bookmakers at this moment. That could easily change once rehearsals start in Tel Aviv, but it might just happen that Duncan does end up the winner. I cannot remember this many positive reactions to a Dutch entry ever and im old enough to remember 1975. Again it… Read more »

Something most of you overlooked:
Thank you to Renske for explaining the history of Dutch broadcasting to us. I genuinely didn’t know anything about the topic until now, so thank you.
I am glad that the Netherlands has a hosting plan. That puts them a big step ahead of Italy, so I hear – the Italy question is genuine, considering that Mahmood also has a chance to win. Why so many critical people? I don’t see why not, they were the runner up not that long ago and sending good songs since then, have a plan just in case sounds logic. Probably Russia, Italy and Cyprus have also a mild idea of what to do in the case they win, counting how close they have been to it in the last years.

Bella

“Cyprus”, lol… They are historically one of the worst performers in the history of Eurovision, and because they pulled a rabbit out of their hat ONCE (with a Greek singer and a song written by a Swede), people think they have a chance to win. This is hilarious…

Well there are plenty of positive comments about the song so Replay could win. So can a load of other entries. Some do better with bookmakers than others but on the night itself everything can change. And i think EBU would be very happy knowing the Dutch take this so seriously, who would have thought after their bad years 😀 A Dutch or Belgian win is what will happen soon, so yall either embrace it or continue on hating, it wont change the fact that it will happen this year or within 2-3 years.

As a Dutch person myself, I agree that the Netherlands is given too much of attention on this site lately. Not because it’s a bad song, on the contrary, I generally feel it’s one of the better songs this year, but given it that much attention will raise people’s expectations that it can only dissapoint when it’s not thát great in may. And of course now Holland is a contender for the win after 44 years and with still holding a record of non-qualifying, Dutch media will publish many and many articles on Eurovision because it’s such a rare situation… Read more »

The thing about the 50k thing, though, is that bigger isn’t always better. Parken was certainly an enormous venue for lots of fans, but it’s been said that the acoustics weren’t very good, a lot of the audience couldn’t see the stage, and other various issues.

While 17k people is a lot less than 50k (duh), it would be a lot easier and better to manage.

Ernesto
Ernesto

Anyway, the final result with 50k was kind of disappointing. It would be way more difficult and expensive to make a good TV show (which is the important part). Ziggo dome is ok, and there are a lot of other places to do it outside Amsterdam.

Also, back in 2001 there was only one show to fill the stadium for. Good luck filling it for two semi-finals and numerous dress rehearsals. I didn’t even realised that! But looking back it would be nice to have a host country where political controversy would not overshadow everything indeed. But people always associate Eurovision with crazy and ridiculous acts, political statements, neighbouring voting and other controversy. So it would be nice to have a winner again which is not connected to that, like Sweden (2015), Denmark (2013) and Sweden (2012). It should be about music and quality again please.

Abilities as in being Swedish? Because then you’re right, unless you are Australia or Sweden most likely you won’t be supported by the juries.

You know what? Everytime I open this site, all I see is this guy’s face. You know there are other 40 artists you can talk about? You want me to vote for him so much to slap him to my face every minute? Are you pushing everyone to vote for him because he’s your fave 4 evah? You asking if I support Duncan Laurence for the win. Or if I think that the Netherlands is rooting for itself a bit too hard. What I think is that YOU are rooting for him WAY too hard. (I won’t vote for Ned… Read more »

I think you are a bit overreacting, aren’t you? Duncan don’t know a thing about this website, so don’t blame him for this.. I agree that the Netherlands is very hyped here at wiwibloggs and i think that Wiwibloggs should stop with that, the only thing they achieve with this is that the majority who visit this forum are tired and done with it and i read so much hate about the Dutch entry, this is not fair.. the Dutch entry is still an amazing, emotional and well produced song and it will do well, hyped or not…

Hold your horses, cowboy. He is a fan favourite and currently on the number 1 spot with the bookmakers. I think it’s only normal that he gets a bit more attention. If he wasn’t a favourite this article wouldn’t have existed.

You obviously have selective vision. Wiwi is in the business of hype, that’s what they do – they hype everybody. If you look at all the articles posted in the last few days, you will see they have given coverage fairly, from Serhat to Sergey. If you don’t like the articles on Duncan, don’t click on them – it’s really not too hard to figure out a solution to your problem.

But still, this is a news item about nothing. I am Dutch and I am not too happy with these articles. I find all the hate it provokes very unpleasant. Duncan is now in Tel Aviv and I read he has an interview with Kan tonight. I now only hope Wiwi doesn’t write about that tomorrow.

Obviously, since this is going to be a 2012 year scenario.
Netherlands are going to be landsliding both televote and jury vote with ease.

Sweden was not a Televote landslide winner in 2012 tho.
They had juries as usual xD But Loreen beat Russian grannies by only 11 points in televoting. It was really close.

Again, they didn’t make a statement. They answered a question by RTL Shownieuws. RTL asked the public broadcaster a question about it and the public broadcaster answered they have some generic plans ready just in case.

sigh, they are not making any statements. Its normal to have a hosting plan in case you win. Every broadcaster should have one in case it happens and im sure a lot of them already have. No need to hate on the Dutch broadcaster, just relax. And i think EBU would be very happy knowing the Dutch take this so seriously, who would have thought after their bad years lol.

In Rome we say “Chi se loda se sbroda” which mean that who is so full about himself will be really disappointed about the future; or in Italy “Non si compra prima la sella e poi il cavallo” or “you have to buy the horse and then the saddle” which mean that people should wait before starting celebrate about something

I am sure this plan was written after the CL suddenly climbed in the betting odds in 2014. So I wonder why this is considered news.

Hilversum, The Hague (twice), Amsterdam…if the Dutch win this year, is it time to give Rotterdam a turn?

Skiwalko

I think it would be between Ziggo Dome (new, modern, big city, capacity of 17,000 people), Ahoj Rotterdam (again, in the center of big city, capacity of 14,000 people, tho last time renovated more than 20 years ago) and, not likely, Thialf, an ice rink in Heerenven with capacity of 12,500 people. Yeah, it’d rather be Amsterdam.

Could also be the Johan Cruijf Arena, formerly known as the Amsterdam Arena, which is the home of Footballclub Ajax. It has a capacity of 68.000 for concerts 🙂

The acoustics in the Johan Cruijf Arena are awful. Friends have went to multiple concerts there and each time it was just dreadful. Also, Ahoy recently got renovated to increase capacity. Not 20 years ago. 🙂

Thialf has no chance unfortunately. Heerenveen doesn’t have the capacity or facilities to host a modern eurovision and we don’t have any nearby airports. Would be crazy to have eurovision in my home province though xD

And here we go, they are already trying biasing EBU by giving guarantees so they will be favored. Watch them already draw second half on the final and perform 22 to 24.

It’s easy to fix. Call NL first when qualifiers are announced then put on the pot a 2nd half that is discreetly marked or heavier and voilà you have drawn magically 2nd half.

stommie

Are you implying that happened somewhere in the past?

Nicolas

Reply to  stommie

Have you noticed that the qualifiers are not now randomly announced but it’s the producers that choose the sorting. And the draw is made by the running order of qualifies. Last year a lot of 1st half have been picked by the big 5 + host so there was a lot of 2nd half remaining. And on SF1 they announced Israel and Cyprus very early so statically they already had more chances to draw 2nd half and they both did….
