It’s still a long two months until Eurovision, but the bookmakers’ favourite to win Eurovision 2019 — the Netherlands, represented by Duncan Laurence — already has a plan ready for hosting Eurovision 2020 in case of a win.
Those who know something of the Dutch work ethic will probably know that the Dutch are always prepared and quite punctual when it comes to organising an event. Eurovision in Concert regularly slays, right?
Well, a spokesperson for the NPO, the parent organisation of all public broadcasters in the Netherlands, has told RTL Nieuws that a generic scenario to host Eurovision has been in the drawers of the public broadcaster for several years now.
“There is a scenario concerning the outline, but we will only start working with it after the Netherlands has won the final.”
Who would pay for a Dutch Eurovision 2020?
The Netherlands has perhaps one of the most confusing and complex public broadcaster structures in Europe, which needs some explanation.
As a result of extreme divides in society at the time of the surge of television in Europe, called pillarisation, the Dutch public broadcaster became a union of several broadcasters with those broadcasters each having their own political or spiritual identity. This was to give every part of society broadcasting time.
The two broadcasters which came together to form AVROTROS originally had more of a liberal stance, but as with many broadcasters, this stance has become less and less visible as time has gone on. Nowadays, the amount of broadcasting time is allocated by the amount of members each broadcaster has.
As the NPO is the parent organisation of AVROTROS, it will mainly be the NPO that would deal with the finances and the subsidies for Eurovision. The NPO told RTL Nieuws that financing is something that they would obviously discuss with the EBU at a later stage. AVROTROS would, however, still take care of all the creative work in the event of hosting.
The Dutch seem to be fully prepared to take on hosting Eurovision 2020 — if, of course, they manage to win. It’s no surprise they’re keen: They have been waiting to host Eurovision since 1980!

nah, not for Italy this year i think they got a fab vocalist in Mahmood (same style as Eros Ramazzotti he got in his voice) and that song has got wow factor on its own

Public broadcaster is used by politicians mainly for political propaganda and that has nothing to do with professional approch to produce a show like ESC…

…and why did they host in 1980??? Israel won in 1979 but couldn’t host back to back Eurovision so they turn it back to the EBU, which at first wanted to give it to the UK to host but they’ve forfeited it and it went to The Hague in the Netherlands.
Seems like history can be repeated, 40 years later, where the Netherlands will host the year after it is hosted in Israel…(or if Israel wins again and cant host, once again, back to back, and The Hague gets it again 😉 )
I think they re-used the sets from 1976 when they hosted in 1980. Maybe they’re still in storage somewhere.
It was a different set in 1980 in the same venue, however they did reuse footage in the opening film from the 1976 contest

the article clearly states that a basic plan of how to stage Eurovision in case of a Dutch win has been around for several years. So that has nothing to do with Duncan or his song. Wiwiblogs has chosen to publish this article because the Dutch entry happens to score well with the bookmakers at this moment. I am glad that the Netherlands has a hosting plan. That puts them a big step ahead of Italy, so I hear – the Italy question is genuine, considering that Mahmood also has a chance to win. As for the others, Russia and Sweden will make it look easy to host, and pretty much everyone else in contention has a hosting plan now.

Like Eurovision was a vocal contest. Most of the contestants have always been bad singers.
The Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam or the Ahoy in Rotterdam would be good choices for 2020 if The Netherlands wins.
These two venues have had experience doing live shows before such as the MTV Europe Music Awards.
The Ahoy is great. But is its biggest arena big enough, though?
Yes, of course. With three live shows and several rehearsals to fill, it is plenty big enough. We don’t always have to chase vast spaces for no reason other than hype.
Why so many critical people? I don’t see why not, they were the runner up not that long ago and sending good songs since then, have a plan just in case sounds logic. Probably Russia, Italy and Cyprus have also a mild idea of what to do in the case they win, counting how close they have been to it in the last years.
“Cyprus”, lol… They are historically one of the worst performers in the history of Eurovision, and because they pulled a rabbit out of their hat ONCE (with a Greek singer and a song written by a Swede), people think they have a chance to win. This is hilarious…
Well, people thought that about Finland and Portugal before their victories too. Improbable and impossible are different things. And as I say, Cyprus was the runner up past year, that must have had them hopes they could actually win one day.
I understand what you’re saying, in theory any country can win. I just don’t think that placing 2nd once means any higher chance of winning in the future (especially not for a country like Cyprus, considering their weak track record).
Well there are plenty of positive comments about the song so Replay could win. So can a load of other entries. Some do better with bookmakers than others but on the night itself everything can change. I’d personally prefer this year’s Greek entry over the Cypriot one and would like to see the Dutch entry win, but than im Dutch and i happen to like the song (a first in a long time for Dutch entries for me).

As a Dutch person myself, I agree that the Netherlands is given too much of attention on this site lately. Not because it’s a bad song, on the contrary, I generally feel it’s one of the better songs this year, but given it that much attention will raise people’s expectations that it can only dissapoint when it’s not thát great in may. True, that takes a few days and since Ajax doesn’t train in the arena it doesn’t matter for them. It would be totally different for Eurovision.
Ajax doesn’t even have matches at the end of May, do they? It would be far better to have a 50,000 person capacity than 17,000. Other countries such as Denmark have done this before.
The thing about the 50k thing, though, is that bigger isn’t always better. Parken was certainly an enormous venue for lots of fans, but it’s been said that the acoustics weren’t very good, a lot of the audience couldn’t see the stage, and other various issues.
While 17k people is a lot less than 50k (duh), it would be a lot easier and better to manage.
Anyway, the final result with 50k was kind of disappointing. It would be way more difficult and expensive to make a good TV show (which is the important part). Ziggo dome is ok, and there are a lot of other places to do it outside Amsterdam.
Also, back in 2001 there was only one show to fill the stadium for. Good luck filling it for two semi-finals and numerous dress rehearsals. Don’t forget this is, after all, a television show – people don’t even have to leave their homes to watch, why would they be inclined to pay a fortune to sit a mile away with bad acoustics?

Wow, some people need to drink a little less coffee or whatever… all Duncan has done is release his song, perform it twice, and give a few interviews. That’s it. Everything else, including some grand masterplan to force him to win, is all in your imagination. The guy himself is probably the most humble artist you’re going to find. Remember this is the very first single he ever released and until 2 weeks ago nobody knew who he was, nor did anybody care.
I think the Netherlands would be a perfect host for a modern competition without these dumb political problems. A winning song which has nothing to do with politics would be also great
I didn’t even realised that! But looking back it would be nice to have a host country where political controversy would not overshadow everything indeed. But people always associate Eurovision with crazy and ridiculous acts, political statements, neighbouring voting and other controversy. So it would be nice to have a winner again which is not connected to that, like Sweden (2015), Denmark (2013) and Sweden (2012). It should be about music and quality again please.

Honestly, everything will come to how the live performance at ESC is, it can be either hit or miss…we seen this many times before, many have fallen…remember 2014, Austria climed the odds like crazy after the semifinal…anything can happen

Hilversum, The Hague (twice), Amsterdam…if the Dutch win this year, is it time to give Rotterdam a turn?
I think it would be between Ziggo Dome (new, modern, big city, capacity of 17,000 people), Ahoj Rotterdam (again, in the center of big city, capacity of 14,000 people, tho last time renovated more than 20 years ago) and, not likely, Thialf, an ice rink in Heerenven with capacity of 12,500 people. Yeah, it’d rather be Amsterdam.
Could also be the Johan Cruijf Arena, formerly known as the Amsterdam Arena, which is the home of Footballclub Ajax. It has a capacity of 68.000 for concerts 🙂
The acoustics in the Johan Cruijf Arena are awful. Friends have went to multiple concerts there and each time it was just dreadful. Also, Ahoy recently got renovated to increase capacity. Not 20 years ago. 🙂

Thialf has no chance unfortunately. Heerenveen doesn’t have the capacity or facilities to host a modern eurovision and we don’t have any nearby airports. Would be crazy to have eurovision in my home province though xD

But how would you make it happen? Like, they have 50% chance of drawing second half, they DRAW the halfs, unless Duncan has a paranormal powers, it’s just a question of luck.
It’s easy to fix. Call NL first when qualifiers are announced then put on the pot a 2nd half that is discreetly marked or heavier and voilà you have drawn magically 2nd half.
Are you implying that happened somewhere in the past?
Have you noticed that the qualifiers are not now randomly announced but it’s the producers that choose the sorting. And the draw is made by the running order of qualifies. Last year a lot of 1st half have been picked by the big 5 + host so there was a lot of 2nd half remaining. And on SF1 they announced Israel and Cyprus very early so statically they already had more chances to draw 2nd half and they both did….
I think most people noticed what happened to Bulgaria in 2017. It was a bit too obvious.

I didn’t say it happened i’m just saying that when you want something to happen on a draw there is always a solution to get what you want by playing with the rules you have fixed before.
Yeah, the Netherlands is really powerful… that’s why they always have really crappy draws.
