Luca Hänni will represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv. He will perform the upbeat dance song “She Got Me” and has already made an impression with bookies. Switzerland currently sits inside the top five most favoured acts.

Luca was internally selected to represent Switzerland after the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation scrapped its usual national final. With Switzerland failing to qualify for the grand final every year since 2014, it’s hoped their change of strategy will signal a change in fortunes.

As we draw closer to Tel Aviv, we have compiled a list of 10 facts you need to know about Luca Hänni. Are you ready? Let’s do this!

1. He won German Idol in 2012

Luca may be representing Switzerland but he shot to fame in Germany on the ninth season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar. At the time Luca became the youngest-ever winner of the German version of Idol, winning the competition at the tender age of 17 years. He was also the first non-German winner of the programme. He wasn’t the only Eurovision star on the show — Cascada’s Natalie Horler was a judge that season. We are really winding back the clock — all of this was before she sang “Glorious” in Malmö.

2. His debut single topped the charts

Luca released his debut single “Don’t Think About Me” following his German Idol triumph. “Don’t Think About Me” was a massive success, reaching number one on the charts in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. His subsequent releases “I Will Die for You” and “Shameless” also had international appeal, charting in all three countries once again. With Austria and Germany both voting in his semi-final, Luca will be hoping that his international fame yields him some valuable points.

3. He has released four studio albums

He may only be 24 but Luca Hänni is no newcomer. He released four studio albums between 2012 and 2015. “Don’t Think About Me” was the lead single from his debut album My Name is Luca, which hit number one in Austria and Switzerland and peaked at two in Germany. His sophomore release Living the Dream also topped the Swiss charts and all four albums have charted in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. “She Got Me” is the latest in a long line of successful tracks.

4. He competed on the Swiss version of Ninja Warrior

Luca’s talents extend far beyond music. All the time spent in the gym has been put to good use. In 2018, he appeared on the Swiss version of the highly rigorous Ninja Warrior. You can check out a clip of his efforts here. We just hope he’ll be climbing up the Eurovision scoreboard as effortlessly as that wall.

5. He gave up laying bricks to pursue music

After finishing school, Luca began an apprenticeship for bricklaying. When things didn’t work out so well on the labouring front, he turned to music as a passable backup plan. He gave up bricklaying for good in 2012 following his success on German Idol. It’s always good to have a Plan B in case Eurovision doesn’t work out, but we’re confident Luca won’t be laying any bricks anytime soon.

6. He performed an incredible duet with Helene Fischer

Back in December 2018, Luca was fortunate enough to perform a duet with German schlager queen Helene Fischer — the eighth highest-paid woman in music globally. The expertly choreographed piece was performed over “Bei Mir”, the German version of Luca’s song “Powder“. The performance took place on the Die Helene Fischer Show Christmas special. The dramatic choreography gives us a taste of the slick moves we can expect in Tel Aviv.

7. He also designs clothes

In case singing, dancing, bricklaying and Ninja Warrior-ing weren’t enough, Luca also dabbles in couture. He designed the line SVSL by Luca Hänni, with pieces for both men and women. Every designer also needs models to sell their work. Have no fear, Luca has a horse in that race as well…

8. Speaking of modelling…

If you don’t know about Luca’s modelling work, you’re probably living under a rock. Either way, it definitely deserves an entry on this list. Luca has modelled his own line, among plenty of other modelling gigs. However, the pièce de résistance would have to be modelling for the Nick Tyler underwear brand. He got us dirty dancing alright!

If you’re just joining the Luca bandwagon, a quick look through his Instagram account will catch you up on everything you’ve been missing out on.

9. She got him

As we highlighted earlier, Luca has an extensive catalogue of music and all of it is worth checking out. However, since BDSM leather-clad groups are all the rage in 2019, we thought we’d mention Luca’s take on the matter. His 2015 single “Set the World on Fire” from the album When We Wake Up certainly does the subject matter justice. Things get saucy in the music video and if Luca was auditioning to join Hatari, he’d certainly make the cut.

10. This won’t be his first involvement with Eurovision

Luca is no stranger to Eurovision. While he hasn’t previously performed at the contest, he did present the Swiss votes in 2017. Luca awarded 12 points to eventual winners Portugal, putting him firmly on the Eurovision radar. Two years later, he will go from presenter to performer as he hopes to accrue plenty of points of his own.

He is like the Mikolas Josef this year. At least he is one of the male artists who is talented and is already standing out at this point.

It seems, Luca knows to deliver. From the Fuego-2.0-group best entry. Less flat. More vibes. Until Now my #5 in an underwhelming ESC-Year. I wouldn’t complain if he won, though my Favorites R Mahmood and Hatari. Austria growing. All of them so totally different from flat copy-and-paste-entries. Thumbs up, Luca! Bring your Show to the point and make us enjoy it! Hopp Schwiiiz!

As German Idol winner he was the most underwhelmimg at the time. His voice was just thin. He whispered more than he sang. But his fan army of little girls was too strong.

But the jury voted him in the live shows.

The jury consists of Dieter Bohlen and he cares more about sex appeal than vocals

The song is catchy, but lacks authenticity. I strongly believe Switzerland, Belarus and Cyprus all fall under the same category, and will be outdone by Malta in final.

I like the profile posts but the order needs to be reconsidered next year–the first five with the post should’ve been Srbuk, Tamta, Jonida, Eliot/Miki and Bilal, IMO.

To be completely unbiased with everything, the profile posts should be in alphabetical order. This would be the only system where nobody would complain imo 😀

this, for me he doesn’t stand out. He has not a real X-factor like Sergey, Duncan, Katerine, Eleni, Netta, Mans Zelmerlow, Loreen to name a few. To me he is a better dancer then singer.
