We’re following the Northern Star all the way to Iceland as we take a look at the Eurovision odds. Latex-clad BDSM-techno band Hatari have cracked into the Top 5 amongst bookmakers to win Eurovision 2019 in May.

In the early hours of March 27, Iceland’s odds have dropped as low as 12/1 with some agencies. They have overtaken Italy and Cyprus since we last checked the odds and are closing in on fourth favourites Sweden, who have drifted out as far as 9/1 with some bookies.

Iceland’s sudden surge up the odds may be indicative of an article by the BBC featuring Hatari. With many bookmakers based in the UK, the feature may be one reason for Hatari’s rise. “Hatrið mun singra” is viewed as a dark horse to take the crown and the additional publicity may be pushing them further north.

Things are shifting ahead of Iceland as well. In our last look at the odds, Switzerland had just leapfrogged Sweden into third. Luca’s odds have continued to improve in the days since, with some agencies now offering as little as 5/1 for the “She Got Me” singer. When the odds go low, they go so low!

In fact, some agencies are offering 5/1 for Russia. Sergey Lazarev hasn’t seen a significant shift in the odds for “Scream” but Luca has closed the gap nonetheless.

On the other hand, bookmakers seem to have stopped hitting replay on “Replay“. Cyprus has dropped behind both Iceland and Greece in the betting odds and is now ranked eighth with bookmakers.

Malta and Norway currently round out the Top 10. This also means that six of the Top 10 with the bookies will be performing in the second semi-final in Tel Aviv, compared to just three from the first semi-final.

What do you think of the latest changes in the betting odds? Will Hatari’s star continue to rise? Let us know in the comments below.

It’s a shame for eurovision that a singer like kobi from Israel isn’t in the top 5 already…

Interesting that, although perennial favorites like Sweden, Russia, Greece, and Italy are in the top 10, a lot of the top 10 are countries who have never won the contest before (Iceland, Malta , Cyprus) or haven’t won in a very long time (Netherlands, Switzerland). It’s very hard to call at the moment, but I’m currently unconvinced that the Netherlands, Switzerland, or Iceland will win in the end, and not solely because they usually don’t perform well in the contest. If I had to make one choice at whose odds at winning are highest, I’d say Italy has the best… Read more »

Are you sure about that? As much I want Italy to have a win soon, it’s been really missing the mark on staging lately.

Hopefully, Mahmood doesn’t stand on the stage alone because if he does, he might risk the stage looking empty.

I will not be suprised if Iceland does win this year. I think the winner will be between Netherlands, Switzerland, Iceland , Italy and Russia and Malta. All depends entirely on the staging. and it’s very open this year. No run away winner, unless we see the presentation. Cyprus is borderline. Greece no chance. We also have to consider the top 6 list here are all male. (Iceland is a group) I really don’t see the top 5 or 6 with only male artists stealing the show. Has this ever happened before? semi final 1 is very weak , we… Read more »

If they’re smart, they’ll save it for the final, since they will without a doubt qualify

I have a haunch they may even win semifinal 1.

If the winners of sf1 have something happen to them in the final, that would make for a very unhappy europe

Just a reminder on how the odds are meaningless, totally off, and it is dumb and borderline irresponsible for wiwibloggs to keep bringing them up:

Odds from March 18, 2018 (per wiwibloggs):

1. Israel (finished 1st)
2. Estonia (finished 8th)
3. Czech (finished 6th)
4. Belgium (did not qualify!)
5. Bulgaria (finished 14th)
6. Australia (finished 20th)
7. Sweden (finished 7th)
8. Norway (finished 15th)
9. Netherlands (finished 18th)
10. France (finished 13th)

Meanwhile on March 18th, 2018, the odds said the following:
Cyprus (predicted 24th! Finished 2nd!)
Austria (predicted 19th, finished 3rd)
Germany (predicted 20th, finished 4th)
Italy (predicted 16th finished 5th)
Denmark (predicted 17th, finished 9th)
Moldova (predicted not to qualify! Finished 10th!)

HallsiKallsi

Let’s remember that the odds from march last year were before the rehersals, Cyprus jumped to first before the 1st semi final and Belgium dropped after rehearsals, the odds will change in due time, but they do give a good idea of what will happen come may. And let’s not forget that Israel was 1st with the bookies, and these odds are based on who wins, not where they place

Did you even think about what you just wrote?? “Let’s remember that the odds from march last year were before the rehersals” – well so are these dumb odds from today! “the odds will change in due time, but they do give a good idea of what will happen come may” – no they don’t and you just contradicted what you said earlier. They don’t give us any idea of what will happen in May, the odds from last March only got 4 out of the top 10 right and some – like Belgium – were WAY off and didn’t… Read more »

Can we please take a moment to clarify that being 24th in the odds does not mean that you’re predicted to come 24th? These are odds to win, which are only aiming to predict the winner. Therefore they are notoriously bad at predicting anything else than the very very top of the scoreboard. Clearly they underestimated Cyprus at this point, but getting number 7 right is not their job.

gilpgilp
Guest
gilpgilp

But Wiwibloggs is citing the fake odds for putting Iceland “into top 5”! The article is totally misleading. Out of the top 5 last year, the odds totally failed with #2, #3, #4, and #5! It didn’t predict 4 out out of the top 5 – and #2 and #3 came close to winning! It didn’t give these 4 a chance to win!

aroncido
Guest
aroncido

Wiwibloggs is saying that Iceland is now, according to the odds, among the 5 most likely to win the contest. There is nothing in the article about coming second, third, fourth or fifth place.

gilpgilp
Guest
gilpgilp

The odds gave 5 songs most likely to win at this time last year and 4 out of 5 did not come close! The odds said that Belgium was among the 5 most likely to win and it did not qualify! Enough with the odds – they are wrong and stupid.

Under the new voting system, the odds will not matter as much. Sure, the most hyped country will get more votes as expected but the tally will differ to count votes. Even a country is ranked within Top 10 will have the same chance as Top 20. It eliminates bs like this article.

My wish is that Italy won. It’s an incredible song both melodically and lyrically . I don’t think it will win though, it doesn’t have the momentum behind it (probably because they released the song way too early and it lost its spark with all the newer songs coming out). It is also one of the big 5 and doesn’t get the benefit of a full semi performance or the associated hype building around that. What more, I also worry the performance minus the live orchestra doing those claps in the background will not feel the same. So if Italy… Read more »

Italy hasn’t quite nailed the staging in the past couple years.

That’d be my main concern for mahmood. His song already seems like a tough one to give unique staging to as is.

I’m hoping to see them get it right and win sometime in the next couple years though.

In 2017 only one act in TOP 10 was a female solo performer – Blanche from Belgium. 2nd and last woman there was Ilinca from Romania but she was joined by Alex. Other 8 acts were all male which has to be the record.

Can it be similar again? Top 6 songs in the betting odds are performed by men.

My top 3 are: Italy, Portugal and Iceland. However, the margin between Mahmood and Hatari for me is too big. Mahmood’s song touched me, and I believe many others, who can relate to such a difficult life experience of not having a father figure in their lives. Moreover, Soldi is catchy and I am sure everyone will *clap clap* to it. I also would like Italy to win because they have been robbed too many times already. Good luck to Mahmood, from Malta.

Any song that is NOT them is not overly hyped at all! I doubt Australia will qualify this year, whatever their staging. I can see the jury voting for this , but the public, i doubt it’s appealing enough. The song is not great, even if it is in a weaker first semi final. One of those songs which will be ignored once first listened to. If it does qualify, saved by the jury again and in 10th place in the semi. This will score very very low in the final if it goes through. Just.

Apart from Arcade, which lives upon a hype sustained by the objective beauty of the song; Italy is a bit underrated by bookmakers because of the staging. Whereas Russia, Switzerland, Sweden (Melodiefestivalen copy and paste as usual – IMHO rightly) and Iceland have already shown or/and declared what we are to expect from them; Italy’s staging is hystorically a weak spot and Sanremo doesn’t help with its spartan stage. Good point. They probably won’t be able to. Which, again, urges caution about Arcade. It’s a terrific studio track and is definitely in contention to win, but it’s hard to see how it will do in the live setting (not talking about Duncan’s vocals) and what kind of staging might get it there.

Well, doesn’t that count for all participating entries? Why should the “Live setting” not be convincing enough? Some entries have been picked in national finals (i.e. based on a live performance). I have no doubt the Netherlands will have a fine staging (although last year makes me a little bit unsure). As far as I’m concerned, next year we’re going to either Russia, Switzerland, or Iceland

At the moment I can only see the Netherlands, Russia, Italy or Iceland win. We all know, that Iceland will probably be dragged down immensely, so they’ll struggle to win. But we never know, maybe the jury won’t hate it after all. I’m not ruling them out yet… The Televote support for Hatari will be huge imo. Russia is Russia… They’re gonna pull some amazing staging out of their hat. The song will sound and look absolutely epic and big on stage, wether you like it or not. Sergey’s vocals are gonna be on point as well. Maybe the whole… Read more »

Yes, I think those four too, plus Sweden I would add, even though I don’t like the song I think the juries will love it and maybe the televote.

Sweden will be in TOP 2 with juries.

I’d change Russia with Sweden. I agree with all you have said about Russia and would personally put it above Sweden, but we know from 2016 that juries hate Russia. Whatever you thought about that song, half the juries placing it outside their top 10 was ridiculous. Sweden on the other hand is traditionally overhyped by the juries, and televoters will love charismatic John Lundvik.

The Netherlands 2019 reminds me of Belgium 2017 (Blanche 4th place). Will be in top 4, but will struggle to climb 3rd place, 2nd place, till the first one.

OFF TOPIC – Are memes now forbidden? Can we post gifs here, or now is illegal?

Belgium 2017 was NEVER the favourite to win, so your comparison makes zero sense.

Belgium was 4th favorite for win on betting odds

Weißbrot

But it was never THE one favourite to win… It was always between Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria, everybody knew that. And anyway, in the end the odds were right about Belgium’s position, weren’t they? Then what speaks against Netherlands going the same route and coming 1st as predicted, if we’re gonna argument like that?

I’ve read an article about the memes and the copyright infringement law. What I’ve gathered is that the law applies to countries in the European Union. And that they have two years to enforce it. And that there could be a problem with the memes in the sense that it cannot be determined automatically whether they infringe copyright or whether they are use to make parodies.
I think that wiwibloggs will know if memes/gifts can be posted here depending on where their site is registered (in an EU country or not) and whether that law applies in that country.

Memes are excluded from the law. So meme on!

Except, as Una put it, the filters that will need to be installed likely won’t be able to tell the difference between a meme and a copyright infringement and will block it anyway.
Hold your MEPs to account and vote them out if they voted for this nonsense.

I like the fact that we have an open competition, unlike last year when Netta was the clear front runner. I just hope that Russia doesn’t win only because of a million dollar staging and all the neighbour’s votes. Sergey is a great singer and he deserves to win the contest with a worthy song, not this lazy and cheap epic ballad

I can’t wait for Russia’s staging BTW and even though I don’t like the song that much I think vocal delivery will be perfect and that all in all Russia will have an epic monumental legendary performance.

Then give him the best performance award and not the SONG contest trophy. I really can’t stand the song, so cliche and outdated

Agree about the song, but if Eurovision was purely a song contest, it should be held on the radio.

I’d prefer to loose to an amazing russian performance than to an icelandic protest song to be honest.

I think this year is so interesting with so many modern and current songs, that speak about so many important topics, I feel that Europe is opening its mind and the contest is helping to fight against many bad issues that are happening right now in our continent … and then wins a telenovela ballad with a video of Sergey rescuing a princess… like, such a turn off.

We can call the Netherlands a sad ballad about a broken heart, basically the same story as Russia

Leah

In this case, just let Italy win and we would have a modern and current song, a young charismatic singer, and a personal message which isn’t about the cliché-love-broken-heart topic.

I can see Iceland doing well. But win? Unlikely.. Same with Switzerland. I can’t even see them in top 5
I think top 5 will be in random order Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, Italy and then it’s open. Iceland, Greece, Malta. Any of those could reach top 5.

juries will destroy Iceland, cause it’s a joke act

they’re a satire act, not a joke act. it’s a big difference.

If you compare musical quality though, the other acts seem more like a joke.

I’m Greek, I love our song, but I won’t disagree with you. It is something different, and even we don’t know the acceptance of the crowd. It can fly to the 1st place or it can stay in the semis, who knows…

If she does sing the song as well as we saw in the snippet of her recording in the studio , I think the Jury vote alone will put Greece in the Top 10.

Marilia

After watching some videos on YouTube of her singing live, her voice is like a screaming cat… sounds like a fake echo that she is trying too hard to make it sound like the studio version… and fortunately the song lasts only 3 minutes, otherwise her voice is too annoying.

Totally agree with your opinion. Nothing special with the Greek song. The song is too average… and if the singer voice is good, so what? Thousands of amazing voices passed from the contest and many of them stayed at the semi finals.

The odds are the top 41 of some concrete guys, from some concrete countries where betting is allowed. I don’t like we hype their opinion so much , to be honest

But they generally get the top 10 right most years, especially after rehearsals – so they definitely are worth keeping an eye on.

I dint think Iceland is a dark horse. It is, for the moment, between Iceland, Netherlands and Italy. These three can just stand there and sing, and they will have a chance to win. The others need an exceptional stage show/live performance just to be a contender.

“They can just stand there and sing” and “the others……” what a stupod and disrespectful comment coming from a person obdessed by Italy but Italy is not better or superior than the others (italian fans and italians think that) and your Mahmood need a staging as all the others because soldi soldi clap clap is certainly not enough lol. Again a person pretentious who doesn’t give the motivation to vote for Italy this year seeing how they consider the others countries. Italians : pretentious, feel superior, disrespectful, very Good COMBO, congratulations, you lost votes each days, well done.

Ehem, I am not Italian and I am not obsessed by Italy. Odds, spotify streams and youtube views is proof that Italy is a contender. And my friend, my first ESC was 1982. I think you were not even born. So, show respect to my age, show respect to different tastes, and show respect to majority decision. I am getting a bit fed up with trolls attacking people everytime they see a comment they disagree, because there is no moderation. It is easy insult people anonymously, if you have the guts give me your name and we talk face to… Read more »
